I don't think it's a case of looking outside the show. It is logical that people he already has contacts with will be more eager to help, perhaps, than others. If you gathered a group of people to sponsor you for something, I'm sure your friends would be much more willing than a stranger in the street. It's also logical that he will dial all of the people in his contact book before he asks others.

The sponsorship thing isn't a fantastic example but it's along the same lines, imo.

its ok, I know what you mean and I understand its an easy way of getting people involved

I can only hope he gets an act that has no connection to XF though

I disagree. Just look at the template set by Band Aid/Live Aid.

Bob Geldof was a controversial popstar back in the day pre Band Aid always spouting off his opinion about everything including music, but when he came up with the idea of Band Aid, he threw his previous views out of the window and quite literally went through the Smash Hits Poll Winners lists and with the help of Radio 1's Richard Skinner & and a couple of Smash Hits journalists/Old Grey Whistle Test Presenters (Mark Ellen & David Hepworth) contacts got round to asking the most popular acts of the day to appear on the record including those that he had previously had feuds with and had been highly critical of. (He applied the same brutal logic to Live Aid).

Indeed a handful of acts at the time refused to appear on the record because he (or Midge Ure) had criticised them (Human League & The Smiths to name two), but after the record was recorded they realised how sincere he was about the project.

Also note Bob Geldof's only request was that the artists left their egos at the door; and did not treat it as a fashion parade.

The record was recorded Sunday 25th November 1984; mixed and played on Radio 1 the following morning; and rush released 29th November 1984. Demand was such that I was not able to lay hands on a copy at Woolworths until 3 weeks later.

When you take into account the digital technology available today, why has the Haiti charity record already not been made and released; as there really is no excuse?

Especially, as in the USA, the Charity album from the telethon as made #1 on the Billboard Album chart & the single Stranded has debuted at #8 after just two days sales/airplay.

Compare that to the midweeks in the UK charts; and all the hype in The Sun/media towards this Simon Cowell PR exercise and it is little wonder that co Band Aid founder Midge Ure has come out and questioned the ethics of this charity record tonight. Whilst highly praising the efforts of the US Hope For Haiti Now and especially the individual efforts made by Lady GaGa & Radiohead who've both played special fund raising gigs each raising over $500,000.

I have gathered that you disagree with me over this Rich, you don't need to keep responding with essays everytime, I won't read them.

In the words of Meat Loaf, you took the words right out of my mouth.

I'm sorry but it is called giving facts, merely backing up and justifying my opinion.

Because Simon Cowell is about as popular with most true music fans as The Glazier family are with Manchester United fans.

And as I've said enough times already, this is NO place for musical snobbery.

I'd like to see you with a relative in Haiti, currently homeless or even dead, then see the reaction you have to all the crap I've had to sift through on here  That's my last word.

Exactly.

So why do you support a record that has not aready been released yet. When the American entertainment industry has already raised $113 million.

I repeat go back to Band Aid. The BBC report from Ethopia was shown just 11 days before the studio time was booked for the 24 Hour recording where all the acts had to be (not recording their bits on in Germany; Australia; LA or New York and sent via a music file over the internet (although David Bowie sung about the concept in his 1973 single Drive In Saturday "crash course on the Astronet" and got ridiculed when discussing it on an appearance on the Russell Harty chat show); and the record was released just three days later.

When you consider how so much easier logistics are and advanced recording technology is in 2010 compared to 1984 it is quite shocking that the UK charity record has not yet been recorded and released. Indeed it makes me quite angry.

Still I've bought the Hope For Haiti Now album & will download the live Radiohead gig when it is available to buy on their website at the weekend after they have mixed it.

But Slick ... you can't argue with Rich's comment:

No there isn't but then it wouldn't give egotistical Cowell as much chance to milk it to the max for himself & his acts.

Does anyone know what percentage is going to Haiti?

I'm pretty sure 100% of it is.

Laura White (from X Factor) confirmed on the single too. From her official facebook:

Hi everyone. I'm part of a new Haiti fundraising single which is going to be recorded very soon with various other artists for what is an amazing cause. Can't say too much, but I'm verrrry excited!! xx

PLEASE TELL ME YOU'RE NOT JOKING?

I wish it could just be Alex, Leona, Gaga and Beyonce on the song this is turning into a right too many cooks spoil the broth. How perfect woud they have sounded on Labi Siffre's Something Inside So Strong.I really cannot imagine a BRIT performance when some of the singers are very good and others have weak voices plus will Subo behave herself onstage.
WHAT?! :o

PLEASE TELL ME YOU'RE NOT JOKING?

She's said she'd like to be on it, but I'd say it's probably too late now.
