To be honest, I don't really like the sound of this. It might only cause interest on certain weeks, when people have no idea who is going to be #1, and it's really close. Won't work so much when everyone knows that Cheryl Cole is going to be #1 from the second she performs on X Factor, and the gap is too wide for fans of the current #2 to buy enough copies to over-take her.

They won't get the sales so they won't know the gap.

1. Well, the EXACT same thing could be said about the end of week official chart. Some weeks you know as soon as Tuesday who will be number 1 for sure...

2. Cheryl was #1 on Itunes hours before her performance on the X Factor.

3. It's not ALL ABOUT the number 1, people are interested in knowing where their favs are gonna chart, not necessarely who's number 1.

Thinking about this more, in a way it spoils half the fun, as you will know how the top 20 is shaping up, we shall see when it comes into practice.

One good thing we can post the full top 20 Midweek chart every Wednesday.

So if someone gets #1 on Wednesday and #5 on Sunday the #1 still counts?

This is a good idea, I always hate people texting/twittering/phoning in saying "___ should be numbarwun111" and you just think "they're like 34 in the midweeks, how on Earth are they getting #1?" but then you realise that not everyone is aware of the midweeks like us.

This is very clever.

Record Companies recognise that there is real competition out there and that fans will buy multiple copies of singles if they think there is a chance that it will improve the chances of their favourite single getting to number 1. The know that mid-weeks information energises this sort of rabid purchasing and so now they are trying to spread the mid-week info further into the public hoping that more copies will be sold.

It just makes it more difficult for sleeper hits and word of mouth hits to make it big as I can see the Top 3 or 5 sales going way out ahead of the rest of the chart. It'll no doubt be focused on new releases.

I dont think thats the way they are gonna play it tbh.

The official #1 will be Sunday. Wednesday will purely be a teaser of how its shaping up encouraging fans of so & so at #2 and #3 to go out and buy...

They won't get the sales so they won't know the gap.

Ah, forgot about that

Cheryl wasn't really my point, she was just an example.

Oh, and yeah, one reason I don't like this idea is because it spoils the fun, but I guess I can't really say that as I spoil the fun for myself every week anyway by looking on here

True on both counts. But all of us on this site spoil the fun because of our interest in the charts.

However while physical sales remain under 2%; and iTunes remains the dominant legal download provider then we'd already have a good idea of how the chart is going (for example: It looks like Marina & The Diamonds will struggle to reach the Top 10 on Sunday :( ; etc).

Good idea, but I won't be listening, as I'll not be home from school until after it's over

Fantastic idea.. and hopefully the first step for Greg James to take over from the dire Reggie on the Sunday top 40 show.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was actually Greg's idea - he used to run down the midweek charts on his UEA radio show!

I'm not sure about this, I think it has the potential to just dilute the effect of the Sunday chart.

I'd rather they had a midweek show that just highlighted new releases out to buy / download that week to try and give more music a better chance.

I think it is a great idea as i think it will push sales higher i think, for example in a week where there is a fairly decent battle for number 1 a show like this could make all the difference and also if a song isnt doing that great a show like this may rally up some more sales plus it will also help make people more aware of new songs in the chart that week prior to the offical sunday chart.

I don't like the timing much either. I'll just have to listen on the website. What time do schools finish these days? Will people be able to listen on their way home?

I thought I bump this up, since its just a fortnite away from coming to fruitation.
Won't this simply just generate more sales from the artists on their own heavily biased playlist?
Hope you all realise that they won't be able to play all the new entries and/or big climbers in 30 minutes and they'll just play what they want ie what's on their playlist!! We won't hear novelty songs or any Daniel O'Donnell I bet!
he does a 'new releases' preview on a monday between half 3 and 3.50 - it will be like that !!
