Seems unclear when poker face was released as a single, so maybe it didn't do well after all.

What I mean by not being released basically amounts to how high it charted on the sales from the album version.

The title track to Coldplay's Viva La Vida album made #1 on the single chart before a video was made for it. Due in part to the song being used as part of Apple Inc.'s iPod + iTunes advertisement campaign.

Around the same time the first single "Violet Hill" from the album only made UK#8.

The following 6 songs made it to #1 without ever being given a physical release:

Coldplay - Viva La Vida

Leona Lewis - Run

David Guetta ft. Akon - Sexy Bitch

Jay-Z ft. Rihanna and Kanye West - Run This Town

Iyaz - Replay

Owl City - Fireflies (the physical has been cancelled)

They all became singles though in the long run.

I wonder if you mean the highest charting single without any video/airplay/release but merely an album cherrypicker?

What's the spec for being actually being a single though? Is it having a video?

No. It's that the single is released seperate to the album version.

Viva La Vida and Run didn't have a digital single release but you can't say that they weren't singles.

Would this include "Blah Blah Blah", which will chart tomorrow? It is being released as a single, but it hasn't been yet, as far as I know, so would it count?

I did specify that my last post were songs that made #1 *without a PHYSICAL*. Those were download only. It does't make them non-singles as they were all promoted as singles, they were just download-only singles.

The highest entry for a track that was never released and had no promotion at all from 2009 would probably be Taylor Swift's White Horse which made #60. It might have had SOME promo though, so idk... and I don't remember past 2009

Arctic Monkeys - Sketchead (#80) I'm absolutely certain had no promo at all, but it was an iTunes bonus track...

Susan Boyle's Wild Horses peaked at number 9 last year- there was no video and very little airplay- I think her performance on XF was to promote the album

It was not a single at all, just chosen as an album track

really cant think of any more unreleased songs with no video that have charted highly

WH did have a fair bit of airplay - R2 A-list if I recall.

Jay-Z's Empire State Of Mind peaked as an album track with no video and fairly low airplay (even though it was R1 A-List)

I know.

But when it peaked, it wasn't a single, I don't think it had even been announced as one.

Going by this... surely Alicia Keys 'Empire State Of Mind (Part II)' is one of them? It came out of nowhere that it was to released as an official single (It's not even got a proper video, just a stunning live version).

They both had a digital single release seperate from the album release although both charted wihtout it initially.

Are you sure? Neither are available on iTunes at the moment.

One which can't be argued against is Leona's Forgiveness (the b-side to Bleeding Love) which reached #46.

I'm not so sure now. LOL. Your right neither are on iTunes. Your likely right about Leona's Run. It wasn't release if I recall now as there was a push on the album. Coldplay however there was some mix up with a single that got it excluded from the chart.

Anyway they both count as having charted before being released whether they where released later or not.
