I noticed that the artists seems have a huge debut album and then have a unsuccessful album. Just name few for you: Mika, Leona, Miley, The Saturdays, Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks. This is awful news as the albums ain't half bad.

Rihanna, BEP, Beyonce, Muse, Paolo Nutini, Kasabian, Robbie, Lily, James Morrison Take That, The Killers and Lady Gaga and many others that have maintain popular through to their second albums and third or fourth in some cases.

Is there problems musically with the artists listed? Or what?

What are your views?

You could call me cynical, but i feel this is an opportunity to shove Ri's success down our throats while highlight Leona's 'lack of' success. I might be wrong but it's not the first time it's happened.

Anyway, there are a number of things wrong with your post:

1) Leona's and possibly Mika's have been successful. It's very hard to top your debut album's sales unless it was severely unsuccessful.

2) Kelly Clarkson's second album has been her most successful by far. Thankful was her debut.

3) Jordin's debut wasn't huge - nor was the Saturdays' tbh. Although Jordin's barely went Gold.

4) Beyonce's second album wasn't actually a big success until Irreplaceable and the deluxe/Beautiful Liar. It's her least successful to date in the UK.

5) Rihanna has been extremely underwhelming this era and Rated R is her second lowest peaking album in the UK. :o

Anyway, there is no such curse. And it's silly to think that. You have listed lot's of artists yourself who have had successful debut albums, obviously some won't but even the people you've claimed have had 'unsuccessful' ones have actually been successful.

That post confuses me.

Also, i've just read the last page and it seems i'm right.

Tacticz, at least be genuine and admit you're not a Leona fan instead of faking that you are. You seem to go on about how Echo is a FLOP.

Echo's sales >>>>>>>>>>>>>>Rated R's sales

And then how it's a flop compared to Spirit.

3m >>>>>>>>>>>> 0.6m (Spirit to Echo in the UK)

1.5m>>>>>>>>>>>>>0.2m (GGGB to RR in the UK)

Hmm, i smell some hypocrisy

Also, Timbaland is facing this HARD at the moment.

Has Shock Value II even gone Top 40 here?

SVII peaked at #58. I'm very surprised at how poorly it's sold :o

Woah... Jordin Sparks self-titled debut sold 1,026,000 in the US and went Gold here in the UK, but Battlefield only sold 158.00 and no certification in the UK
I would hardly say Leona Lewis has been unsuccessful. Echo has gone double platinum after only the 1st single. Yes, its not been anywhere near as big as the first album but thats to be expected really.

You see some people on here can't have a sensible view like that ^

Echo hasn't even finished it's chart life. I'm sure it'll sell over 1 million by the end of the year.

Hopefully yeah. I like Leona. I just not loony over her.

But you are over Rihanna at the expense of other artists.

True. I LOVE RIHANNA!

Same but just a friendly tip: you don't need to prove Rihanna's success by rubbishing Leona's and the like :D

1 million in the UK? You serious?

With what? Theres no more massive christmas sales/single sales anymore. I Got You, lets face it, is barely going to boost the sales up a further 90k, nevermind 300k+. I doubt it'll make Top 15. #19-23 is more likely. I like the song, it's one of my favourite Leona tracks. I know all the songs on Spirit, but only OMH, Happy and IGY on Echo.

So you're finally admitting that the album has sold more than 200k then? -_-

Can we stop arguing about Leona please? This is not a Leona thread. I'm pretty sure she's sold just over 500k - so the album is not really a flop. BUT considering the money SyCo have put behind her, 2 X Factor performances and lead songs on the Avatar (biggest film ever) and Final Fantasy (one of the biggest franchises in the world) soundtracks then maybe it could be considered a flop from a money perspective. So there that's that debate to bed!

A lot of points about 2nd albums that i'd have said have already been brought up. I do think there's a tendency for artists to have a 'flop' second album, but that's only because their debut album probably over-succeded. You can't always expect success - times move on. And it varies, a lot of acts don't always get the success on their debut album, but as times goes on they get more exposure and become more successful (Snow Patrol, You Me At Six, Paramore are all good examples that I can think of).

She's sold around 600k in the UK, and 1.4million globally.

It's not bad sales, but I don't think she stands a chance of selling 1m in the UK with Echo personally. Awful, boring lead single. 2nd single doesn't look to be doing much, and after that there's no chance.

Consider this - maybe the album that was successful wasn't that great. Maybe people dont want to be stung a second time by an artist and don't by the follow up.

But that is a silly point to make as firstly, "I See You" from Avatar had nothing to do with Echo....it is not on the album, so why would her singing the song affect album sales?? Secondly, Final Fantasy XIII isnt even out here yet so the majority of people havent heard "My Hands" featured on it

These Leona debates are getting so tiresome now on Buzzjack

Rachel Stevens fell victim of the second album syndrome too....completely undeserved as the first was terrible compared to the second. Negotiate With Love wasnt a great single, but So Good and I Said Never Again should have been able to help the album but even they struggled to be hits.

I fear Alphabeat will fall victime to this too which is a shame cuz i love them, i wouldnt be suprised if The Ting Tings struggled with the next album too...although i'll reserve judgement till i hear new material.

On the other side Lily Allen had pretty big success with her second album, 3 of the 4 singles were big hits too, i think because her music evolved on the second album, it wasnt so far off from her first but still distinct enough to keep people interested in her.

Its hard to avoid the second album syndrome and sometimes its impossible, if someone does change their sound they could be accused of selling out and losing their fanbase, or if they dont change people will get bored of them, and sadly they could play all their cards right but no matter how good the music is nobody cares anymore.

Leona's 2nd album isn't a flop at all. It's realistically sold 1-1.1mil WW atm (not 1.4mil) off the back of 1 single. FF13 will help it as they said they were going to put out a big promo list. So My hands will definitely help Echo. ISY isn't related to the album so wouldn't sell it, although it raises leona's profile. IGY atm is starting to climb quite fast on itunes, currently @ 34. IGY IMO opinion is a slow burner and should help the album get another 100kish. In terms of US carreer. I have a feeling she will be relaunched in April. IGY has hit written all over it for US radio, it just needs to be pushed by the label. The tour will help the album and there is inevitably a re-release with an X-factor performance coming. The album will sell in the long term, it won't be like spirit, which had the monster BL to kick it off :)
