I seem to remember seeing the CCTV of Venables/Thompson leading Jamie away. The poor wee lad was standin outside a shop window on his tod when the pair came up to him.

Not 100% sure tho, it's been quite a while since i saw the footage and i too was pretty young when it happened.

Yes he was on his own when they lead him away. Anyone who's had a kid though knows you've to have eyes in the back of your head to watch them every second. He obviously wasn't on one of those kiddie leashes and had left his mum and come out of the shop. Unless she left him outside to go in herself, whch if she did was very neglectful. Still didn't give them the right to lead him away though. Very sad case.

If this is true, then, although I wouldn't say she was more culpable, I would say she is partially to blame... but I've never heard of it before (though admittedly I was too young to actually follow the story at the time it was originally around). And although I've been defending her right to criticise the government/Venables/Thompson until now, I do think she took it too far by calling for that children's commissioner to resign.

I think she's totally out of order in demanding the Children's Commissioner resignation, simple as.. The Children's Commissioner is there to represent the interests of ALL children as far as the law is concerned, and really I think she's got something in what she says, at the end of the day she's giving an opinion as to whether there can be a better way to deal with these sorts of things in the future should they arise.. At the end of the day, the trial of Thomson and Venables was just a show for the public, there was never really any doubt as to whether they actually did it, so in circumstances such as that what's the point..? Nothing was gained from it other than to feed the Tabloid frenzy and sell a lot of copies of The Scum and the Daily Heil... It didn't further the cause of justice to put two 10-year olds on trial in an adult court, they ended up being detained for an indefinite period anyway, which could just as easily have been accomplished by sectioning them immediately under the mental health act...

Pity you guys dont have Children's Panels/Hearings like we do in Scotland...

I was a bit older, so I remember it well.. And the original story was that Jamie WAS left on his own outside a shop while his mother went inside, apparently he was standing their for a fair bit, so as far as I'm concerned she's partly responsible for what happened through her stupidity and neglect, I'd say she's as responsible as the McCanns were for leaving their kids alone in a hotel room while they went out and partied..

Of course, this kind of got, well, airbrushed shall we say... Especially in the aftermath when the "Video Nasties Part II" frenzy came into being, and everybody and their dog jumped on a bandwagon and started demanding that certain Horror films be banned (because that was obviously the reason for what happened isn't it..?).

as i see it, that comissioners only 'fault' was no subscribing to the hype, the hysteria, the lynch mob morons....

I think it's pretty f***ing ridiculous that the commissioner has been forced to apologise for stating her opinion. It's really sad when you start to lose sympathy for the victims in these cases but some of them just cannot keep out of the press and are forever claiming they have a right to have everything their way.

Exactly, it's especially annoying when it's actually partly Denise Fergus's fault her wee boy was kidnapped in the first place through HER neglect..... <_< Someone needs to remind that woman of her own responsibility.... Same for the McCanns...

I lost sympathy for her the minute she got PR guru Max Clifford on board. But as most intelligent people know he wields so much influence that Prime Ministers have to take notice or risk the wrath of the increasingly moronic media.

Such is the problem with "Dumbed Down Britain" these days if you ask me... -_-
