Maybe it's my imagination, but songs don't seem to be hanging around quite as long as they did a year ago?

While downloads ensure that popular songs don't fad away quickly, perhaps higher overall sales mean they they are getting pushed out of the T40 sooner?

Yes the chart does seem to be speeding up a bit, the last act to spend 4 weeks at #1 was Lily Allen, exactly a year ago. I can see a pattern forming already with acts charting at #1 on downloads only, aka Iyaz, Owl City, Jason, Tinie and maybe Justin Bieber, its beginning to look like hits that never expected to be #1.

I also see another pattern forming of having more #1s than usual, for example Year 2000, only 3 acts have stay longer than a week at #1 so far this year.

Definately, Iyaz and Owl City were long running number 1s that looked set to hang around the top 40 for a long time- and Iyaz looks set to be out of the top 40 in 2 weeks, and OC has fallen out of the top 10 just 4 weeks after it fell from number 1 :o

I don't agree - I think we've just been BOMBARDED with major releases in the past couple of weeks.

Jason, Ellie, Sugas, Chiddy Bang, Cheryl, Tinie, Wiley, Boyzone, Gramophonedzie, Daisy Dares You, Beaver, Gabriella and McLean namely. The schedule's dried up a bit now, so the chart will 'slow down' a bit again and the fast-falling songs will stabilise again.

I don't see much difference. The songs just don't have enough appeal to stay around, nothing to do with the chart being faster imho. Iyaz's song just isn't popular in the long-term as it was such a poor number one that will be completely forgotten by the end of the year (and probably already is to some) in the same mould as Pixie Lott and Kelly Clarkson's number ones of last year. And Owl City is falling from number one at a similar speed as Lily Allen did last year, but she eventually stabilised for a bit and I think Owl City might do the same.

Of course, this only applies to pre-album singles...

Well, when Kylie's new single stays at #1 for 10 weeks, that'll break the pattern. :w00t:

I actually think 'Replay' will stick in peoples' heads for a while. It should stabilise a little now the release schedule is drying up, I'm struggling to find anything that could fly to the top of the charts now. 'Telephone' is gaining momentum and will probably edge out 'Rock That Body' in two or three weeks.

Yeah, I thought this too. We had so many 1 weekers last year. It was worse than 2000! And also, we've had 3 songs that were number one twice (Boom Boom Pow, Bad Romance and I Gotta Feeling) in the past year, which I don't think has happened in ages.

 It was nowhere near as bad (if 1 weekers are bad) as 2000!

I don't care about the Top 40 - I go for the complete Top 100 chart and there are lots of hangers on down there.

#55 - Florence & the Machine - 49 weeks

#63 - Lady GaGa - 60 weeks

#70 - Kings Of Leon 70 weeks

#72 - Beyonce - 69 weeks

#82 - Lady GaGa - 62 weeks

#94 - Lady GaGa - 60 weeks

#98 - Kings Of Leon - 76 weeks

even back up at #27 - Journey 106 weeks

Err... these figures are a little inaccurate ;o

#55 is on 13 weeks (Flo's other entry has 31 though)

#70 is on 78 weeks

#72 is on 60 weeks

#82 is Zinc's Wile Out (4 weeks) - Just Dance at #83 has 54 weeks

#94 has 47 weeks

#98 has 74 weeks

#27 is on 51 weeks
