Epic (Sony Music Entertainment) is really bad - see Shakira's "She Wolf" for why. They only seem to promote like the first single and then the album and then forget that their artists are still releasing stuff.

Also all of Universal Records are starting to annoy me with those god awful compilation CDs released ever week - it's either a chavy "Clubland" CD or a very boring "My Songs" CD filled with songs that got played to death with months ago.

Oh don't get me started with those "My Songs" CDs. It's always some douche with a guitar ie Jason Mraz, some dreary ballad "Red" by Daniel Merriweather and other stuff that wouldn't look out of place on a Heart FM, Magic, Bliss playlist.

Shakira's "Gypsy" is awful! She seems to be channeling Cicciolina with her vocals on that song.

If only :kink: Actually I like it, but Ilona Staller is something else

I couldn't agree more. I can think of at least 10 or 15 songs currently smashing in Europe that could be huge here with Radio 1 support, half of last year's #1's in Germany for a start...

Thirded :(

My problem with the Clubland CD's is it's often the only place to get most of the awesome music they've licenced from Europe, and then in crappy remixed form. Surely a label can't make money out of an artist like E-Type by promoing three singles, sticking two on a compilation, and not releasing any of them as singles?

I think Clubland make their money from the tours they have and there is a few big names affiliated with their label. On top of that they have their own channel on SKY Digital, which has...... PUBLIC CHOICE!!!! Something thats lacking on the EMap ones.

The Universal company make the Clubland CD's really cheaply, using artists on small independent record labels and take artists from their own record labels. So when they do come to release it, it can flop badly and it can still make a decent profit.

The way their mixed isn't that spectacular either. I own Clubland 8 & 13 and I've only listened to them once. I only bought them for the remixes until I found out they were mixed together.

I am disgusted at the way record companies are so bias against music from mainland Europe.

There is so much good stuff out there it only needs releasing and promoting. Yet they favour much of the US rubbish.

Before anyone starts on about language problems, well over 50% of it is recorded in English.

Acts such as Within Temptation, HIM, Scooter, Stanfour, Milow, Charlie Winston, Tokio Hotel, Kane, Anouk, Laura Jansen, Tom Dice, Milk Inc. Bob Taylor, Peter Luts and many more...

I'd go along with this critcism tbh... Indeed, lots and lots of great European acts out there, paticularly in the Alternative category... It's not necessarily a handicap to sing in mother tongue though - Rammstein have been pretty successful in the UK, and Norwegian act Combichrist are (finally) catching up after touring with them.. Problem that HIM are having now is the fact that there last two albums have been totally p!ss-poor, I simply cant listen to anything after "Love Metal" tbh.....

Sugababes in genreal?

Easily one of the best examples for Universal Island.

I could write a dissertation on the $h!tty $h!tty $h!tty decisions Island and Crown have made over the years. Hell i could probably write a dissertation on the f*** up of this era.

Universal Island combined with Crown Management is a lethal combination See Mutya Buena, VV Brown and Gabriella Cilmi [Lets be honest, she only has a UK career coz of that advert.]

Hollywood Records springs to mind. Their artists barley get 2 singles per album, and even at that only a couple of their artists get their songs actually sent to radio. In the past 2 years, a few artists have left due to lack of single support and promo.

Also, Syco (Simon Cowell's label) arent all that great anymore. Leona Lewis only got 2 singles from her first album (ignoring potential hits), they chose the wrong lead single from her latest album, waited too long to follow it up with a second, probably wont release a third, and are still yet to follow the first single (which flopped) in the States and other international territories. They make good albums, but dont have a clue what to do with them after the first single.

A Moment Like This,

Bleeding Love

Better In Time

Footprints In The Sand

Forgive Me

I count 5

Some of these examples are p***-poor. The reason why these singles/albums/artists are underselling with their certain 'era', is because, quite frankly, they're crap.

When was the last time the Sugababes made any relevent? Or Mariah Carey. Shakira's 'Gypsy' is flopping because quite frankly, it's crap. Same with most of the Rihanna material I've heard. 'Good Girl Gone Bad' was a good pop album, Rated R however? :/

... and just remember, it's not just the record companies fault. Just remember that the song comes from the artist the majority of the time, not the label.

A moment Like This was an unofficial single. It was released after she won X Factor, and they added it on as a Bonus Track 'just because'. Bleeding Love was the 'lead' single. Better in Time & Footprints were released as one single release, a Double A Side, therefore not qualifying both as singles. Forgive Me was released as the lead from the re-release. 2 single releases

Mercury Records jumps into my mind as far as shoddy labels are concerned. So many great acts were neglected and not given a fair chance - Shiny Toy Guns, Dragonette, The Modern, Patrick Wolf, Alexis Strum, Belle, The Envy Corps, The Webb Sisters...

And 679's handling of Little Boots was appalling.

AATW have gone downhill over the past five years or so also.

Branching off from another topic, AATW really should have made more use of Alcazar? Who the hell chose Burning as the lead comeback single here, and why hasn't that even been released other than a remix on a Clubland CD? Radio 1 would have supported it I reckon had AATW properly pushed it their way. Not that I even care about Burning that much anyway. Stay The Night is the biggest new UK gay anthem that never happened and Headlines has some potential here as well. But they've been completely sidelined :(

Stay The Night could be so huge here! Poplife Records need to sign them, although having said that, their handling of My Lonely Valentine was very bizarre. I don't think it's even come out yet and Valentines day was ages ago

Burning is a good track, but there were so many other better options. And why was the video for Burning full of 1 second blackouts, not to mention the dancing in a toilet

My Lonely Valentine was scheduled for digital release on Monday, but I haven't found it anywhere :(

Tell me about it :snif: I have heard that the UK comeback single will now be We Keep On Rockin' but I can't see the source for that... Stay The Night probably isn't dance enough for them, I think they should skip straight to Headlines now...

The Burning video was made by the Swedish record company AFAIK and is meant to be funny, I think they should make a whole new video for the UK...

AATW diversified a few years back and it did them the world of good - they were behind Frankee's #1 single (the reply to Eamon) and had #1's that year with LMC vs. U2 and DJ Casper as well. We Keep On Rockin' as much as I love it would do bugger all here. Burning and Headlines are decent enough to go top 20 with Radio 1 support and I genuinely believe that Stay The Night could still go top ten easily with it. It may be a year old but so are Hot and Stereo Love.

AATW just seems to have forgotten how to promote artists though. They did OK with Agnes, but I think that was distributed through Universal anyway. Cascada has died a death, which is impressive considering they're a UK-fronted act  Fascination/Polydor should pick them up, I'm sure their contract will have lapsed by Summer, perfect time to unleash Headlines

Pet Shop Boys - Integral

Muse - Map of the Problematqiue

Two tracks that should have had full release in the 00s. Could have been huge if lead off singles.

I think releasing Happy as the first single from Leona's 2nd album was a mistake. I Got You was much better and should have been released first.

YES!!!!!!

The way Mercury handled Dragonette was diabolical. They are so underrated in the UK/on Buzzjack :(

I LOVE Dragonette  But considering they've never released the second album here (did Pick Up The Phone actually get released, or Fixin' To Thrill (the single) for that matter?) they sort of got what they deserved (Mercury I mean...) Boys And Girls with Solveig would have been huge too :(
