It really doesn't make sense that people would switch to the Tories over this. The party who had to sack a candidate for saying homosexuals were "not normal". The party whose shadow Home Secretary has been invisible in the campaign after saying B&B owners should be able to turn away gay couples. The party whose own leader made such a mess of an interview with Gay Times that he had to ask for the cameras to be turned off.

If Cameron had made such a remark we can be sure that any criticism would be described by the Tory press as "political correctness gone mad". That's not to defend his remarks. It's just an illustration of how two-faced the press is.

Well seeing as Mr Brown has labelled those people as bigotted, they may as well do.

Plus as most people have an Old Etonion class thing against Mr Cameron, they would have been far more likely to have expected him to say what Mr Brown has said today to "common white riff-raff" so it would have been less damaging for Mr Cameron than it is to Mr Brown because the person Mr Brown insulted is at the heartland of the core Labour vote and not the core Tory vote.

I'm sure Cameron has said things about voters he's met which he would not want reported. In the interests of balance, Nick Clegg has probably done so too.

Yet another example of how ridiculous our electoral system is. The Lib Dems can get almost 40% of the vote and still be some way short of a majority. Labour got just over 35% at the last election and a majority of 66.

In the interests of balance I should add that the Lib Dem vote only needs to go up a few points from your figures and the number of seats increases very fast. But that just makes the system seem even more laughable.

In all honesty, I think everyone (myself included) is putting too much stock in the BBC's seat calculator. I think virtually all of the working-class voters that Labour has lost have switched directly to the Lib Dems - whereas the seat calculator assumes all Labour's lost votes are split proportionally between Tories, Lib Dems and Others. If I'm right, that would probably mean the Libs will take a lot more seats in Scotland and northern England than is being indicated.

I don't think the Gillian Duffy's of the country will vote Conservative, but they may well just stay at home - which would obviously harm Labour.

Well how come I know from a discussion after work last Friday that I and three others whom all claimed they voted Labour at the next election all said we are planning (reluctantly) to vote fo the Conservatives this time around?

I didn't realise the four of you were the only people on the electorate now. :o

Do you even live in Scotland or northern England anyway?

The BBC's calculator is very basic. There are others such as electoral calculus http://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/ which are more sophisticated. This lets you build in tactical voting and even to allow for regional variations. They also make allowance for the fact that Lib Dem MPs generally benefit more from the incumbency factor than Labour or Tory MPs although that doesn't look so relevant now.

I didn't realise that like if you play for Liverpool or Manchester United that you can't move to the other club right away.

Silly me.

It might surprise you but it is possible to go from voting from Labour at one election to go and vote for the Conservatives at the next (and vice-versa), you know.

Craig, you could try and sound a little less like a kid in the playground. Your immaturity gives objective Tory voters like me and others here a bad name.

Prescott sums up today just nicely IMO.

Are you kidding? That's laughable. He doesn't even offer up the obligitary 'it was a misunderstanding' or attempt to excuse what Gordon said. He just skims over it entirely. The point here is not that if the tables had been turned and it was David Cameron who'd been caught bitching about a member of the public he might not have been outed by certain media outlets. What ifs are irrelevant.

I agree. General Elections are not like following Football teams were you pick a side to follow as a child and you follow them through thick and thin. It is about voting for the party whose policies you feel will most benefit the country & yourself at that point in time.

I have as much contempt for anyone who follows a political party whatever, as someone who changes the football team they support.

Still, it is not as if a Labour candidate in a maginal seat has been arrested for crashing her car into a roundabout and being breathalysed and blood tested is it ......

Oh hang on a minute:

It really is turning into a potential "Black Wednesday" for the Labour Party isn't it.

The Liberals might half inch a fair few of the Nats seats up north. According to the papers [The Scottish ones] the SNP have fallen in the polls as a result of Cleggmania and the debates :w00t:

Is anyone else completely disgusted that this woman is getting paid paid 50k for selling her story. What story is there to tell. Things like this just show why this country is in the $h!tter.

I have done hundreds of objective posts both in this thread and the one in the Lounge so a Crazy Chris moment is no big deal, just sharing my happyness at Labour's meltdown.

Has she actually agreed to take the money? If she has, the least she can do is give it to charity. And let's hope whatever scummy rag pays the money loses sales when they publish her "story".

I'm in a state of near depression thanks to this. The core Labour vote's going to absolutely collapse unless Brown plays a complete blinder tomorrow - likely to the point where a coalition with the Lib Dems will be unviable due to a lack of seats. What utter rotten luck for Brown, although he does have himself completely to blame in how he's handled this - apologising makes him sound insincere. He should've stuck to his guns and explained why he thought that - and, to be frank, from the transcripts it is very easy to see how she could be interpreted as being bigoted (although just as easy to see how she could not be interpreted as such, before I get accused of being an apologist). A frank and honest explanation would've gone down far far better.

As others have said though, I find the thought that Clegg and Cameron haven't done the same to be completely ridiculous. I know from first hand experience that several politicians have done exactly the same (naming no names lest people go screeching) thing, so it's more Brown's hideous luck to have been caught red-handed.

Well seeing as Mr Brown has labelled those people as bigotted, they may as well do.

I would say it would be just as damaging, given it would confirm the Old Etonian class thing and prove once and for all that the Tories haven't changed

It is all over Twitter and yeh you guessed it The Sun is running it. She won't give it to charity she is from Rochdale she will pocket it.

Why this story has even got so big is beyond me.

It really is turning into a potential "Black Wednesday" for the Labour Party isn't it.

Funny you should mention that with the economic debate tomorrow. That could be something that could go against Cameron as he was directly involved with just that.

Labour may have buggered up but the Tory economic plans are frighteningly ridiculous tbh.
