April 7, 201016 yr But when your song isnt getting playlisted, especially on Radio 1, you're missing out on millions of listeners who are gonna hear your song. Forget about people liking a song enough, there needs to be a big enough audience first. There used to be a time when TV channels had more power, like The Box, programmes like TOTP and CD UK did help too. All you have now are performances on popular shows, and lets face it, you wont be hearing a stomping dance tune on any of them. I was going to actually mention Top of the Pops and/or CD:UK but didn't so I apologize. Another thing that kind of annoys me about reading this topic every week is how quite a lot of people get annoyed when something like Biffy Clyro is added but if anyone says anything bad against an artist such as, and this is just an example, Sophie Ellis Bextor people get really bitchy. I am sorry if this annoys people. Please don't hate me
April 7, 201016 yr Author Who cares what others think? I say my mind every week, so can you ;) Everyone has an opinion on the music playlisted, and you're not gonna agree with everyone regardless. I haven't seen anyone get personal here, people are just passionate about the artists they love, tis all.
April 7, 201016 yr Jesus, if Radio 1 played everything people wanted they'd have about four thousand songs on the playlist. Just face it that sometimes they'll playlist music you think is $h!t and sometimes they won't. Sometimes they'll A-list your favourite act, sometimes they'll ignore them completely. You'd think it was a matter of life and death. :| If the song and act are good enough, they'll become successful without Radio 1 and will eventually be supported by them.
April 7, 201016 yr I heard CD:UK was returning and they were getting either Jedward or Abbey Clancy to host it. Was that a lie?

April 7, 201016 yr Nah totally disagree here. It depends what you label successful. Most of what Radio 2 playlist is successful in some way, the same as 6 Music. They might not have the same impact on the singles chart but more people buy their albums and go to their gigs as a result of airplay. If an act is getting NO exposure then yeah, worry. But as long as they're reaching an audience...
April 7, 201016 yr Author I still see Radio 1 as a singles orientated playlist, they add songs based on their release date, they remove them when they start to drop out of the top10/20 depending on which list they are. I agree R2 and stations like that which are meant to reach older audiences are successful because they incentivate people to get the albums and such, but R1's target audience is much younger, teenagers and young adults, and they are not the best album buyers, they are the ones who are downloading singles of I-Tunes and the ones who still bother to go to a store and get a CD single of their favourite artist. There are audiences and audiences, and unfortunately for a song that's hoping to be a hit in the singles chart, Radio 1 is far and away the best vehicle to achieve that - tv channels and local radio stations dont have the capacity to give a song that much impact. Inna for example, an artist that is meant to be a singles artist only and who's targetting the singles chart needed Radio 1 behind her. She had Kiss, Galaxy and The Box behind her, and I think that would be exposure enough for a top40 hit single, or slightly higher. But I think Radio 1 was the station to give her a big push into getting a top10 single - since there are no big shows that gonna have her perform her track, let's be honest. Top40 vs Top10, two very different results that could've gone either way: we would think the song wasn't that good in the first case, and that the song is really good in the 2nd case, but it's only a matter of exposure.
April 7, 201016 yr I heard CD:UK was returning and they were getting either Jedward or Abbey Clancy to host it. Was that a lie? I think that story was too recent to tell whether there's any truth in it at the moment But I'd certainly watch CD:UK if Jedward were hosting
April 7, 201016 yr They should playlist Adam Lambert! It's all over the music channels and I want it to do well. Pretty $h!t list on the whole though. Thankfully I don't listen to Radio 1 to endure most of it...

It's not about what I like/dislike at all. I mean why the need to playlist Florence and 3oh!3 when there both re-releases and both arn't doing particularly well, surely it would make sense to playlist new music or perhaps new artists and give them a chance rather than sticking with the acts they know will do well. They play it too safe for my liking! I can't believe how they hang onto acts playlisting every single song even when they flop! Edited April 7, 201016 yr by Chris J.
April 7, 201016 yr I can't believe how they hang onto acts playlisting every single song even when they flop! Maybe they sell the albums well?
April 7, 201016 yr I can't believe how they hang onto acts playlisting every single song even when they flop! Or don't playlist others just because of one underperforming single. (David Guetta, Agnes, Shakira, Keri Hilson and probably plenty more...)
April 7, 201016 yr Alexandra's release is still about a month away at the minute. I'm quite sure she'll make the next playlist. :)
