Fantastic for B.o.B! It's going to be huge. Really hoping they playlist Kevin Rudolf & Co.

Just 3 new additions this week when Kaci, Sophie E-B & Alexandra could all have done with a playlist spot? When are Kaci and Alex released? Is there still time for them?

With regards to your comment on the first page Aly I truly can't believe anybody could get 'unbelievably angry' about this. What, are they obliged to playlist her or something? Put your blind fandom aside and face facts - her last solo single bombed, the Freemasons collab did unexpectedly well and they playlisted it accordingly (I'm not sure how adding it after it charted makes them some sort of criminal but there you go), and whilst Bittersweet is very, very good it doesn't really sound like the sort of thing that's going to be a big hit in 2010 does it?

As for the 'other stuff on their playlist was preceeded by a flop single' argument Dre, so what? Are you saying that if they playlist one artist whose previous single flopped they should do the same for everybody? The playlist has a finite number of slots and Radio 1 aren't a charity. They do market research and playlist songs having examinded the results of that.

Have you considered that possibly their research upon playlisting Heartbreak found that either the song or Sophie herself wasn't popular with listeners? After keeping Leona on the A-list for an age with Happy they found that the song was almost universally disliked, hence I Got You never getting any higher than the C-list. They don't just choose their playlist blindly.

In a peverse sort of way I sometimes think I prefer it when good songs miss out on play from Radio 1 because it's not healthy for anybody to have to rely on one outlet for success. Guaranteed Radio 1 play just encourages lazyness. I like my favourite artists to pull out all the stops in terms of producing a great video, an exciting viral campaign and securing high profile TV promo so that when Radio 1 lets them down there are other avenues which might lead to a success on the charts.

I'm saying that your argument that they didn't playlist her based on her previous chart performance doesn't mean anything considering they keep playlisting artists who have flop after flop. If they are snubbing her, it's for another reason. I'll say her sound just doesn't fit with what Radio 1 likes right now, and what they've been liking for several years now.
I just think Radio 1 are trying too hard to bring rock and Indie back. But kids at the moment are into R&B, Grime etc which is why much of the stuff they are playlisting is flopping.

As much as I hate to admit this, there is some truth in this statement. Then again, it could be argued that rock/indie was living off a false economy with most of its sales coming off the back of multiformatting of CDs/B-sides which have more or less evaporated with the introductions of downloading. It's only really artists with cross-over appeal (Kings of Leon), music used in adverts (Temper Trap, Big Pink), or bands that still give their fans new b-sides on each of their releases (Biffy Clyro) that are having success in the singles chart. Anyway, most rock bands would be more conscious about their placement in the album chart rather than the singles chart.

Does anyone know whether Heartbreak Make Me A Dancer by Sophie Ellis-Bextor was playlisted last year?

Yes, but from what I've heard, only after it started to do well

This is ture. I don't see why Radio 1 support should just be about singles either. So what that Kids In Glass Houses have minimal chart success? They'll make more money from their gigs than a lot of their playlist.

It's not about what I like/dislike at all. I mean why the need to playlist Florence and 3oh!3 when there both re-releases and both arn't doing particularly well, surely it would make sense to playlist new music or perhaps new artists and give them a chance rather than sticking with the acts they know will do well. They play it too safe for my liking!

I can't believe how they hang onto acts playlisting every single song even when they flop!

Florence & The Machine's re-release is currently #34 in the chart. Given that Radio 1 playlist more songs than actually make the top 40 then by using that definition it's more worthy than a lot of songs they do playlist?

Oh for crying out loud. Of course they're not "obliged" to playlist her but I think they're being a bit unfair. 'Bittersweet' does sound current, has practically receieved universal praise and seems to be doing well everywhere else (which may be in vain now). It's a bit frustrating from my position so I'm perfectly entitled to express my dismay.

As for the last bit, that's a bit of a naive way of looking at it. The simple fact of the matter is without Radio 1 playlisting it IS nigh on impossible to do well and a hit without playlisting is very, very rare. I don't know how it encourages laziness at all.

some good debates in thsi weeks topic and im thoroughly enjoying reading them.

the look back to the 2006 list was brillant, only 4 years ago and yet so much has changed - so much good rock music on there compared to now.

i think the people on buzzjack just enjoy their pop artists as this is a charts site and thats why theres so much dismay when people like SEB or leona are not playlisted (even though there are 3/4 other artists on the list that are similar in music type and influence - my opinion only, not fact before i get attacked by a leona obsessive lol)!!

as for this weeks list - gutted giving up the gun has been removed, its only been there for a few weeks, it needs more momentum. good to see the cave and pass out being taken off - they have been played enough!!that BOB ft bruno song is going to be a massive number 1, i liked it on first listen, good rnb for the good weather. as for kelis, it will be alisted next week for sure - its just blisted too early - its not out for another 4 weeks remember - it will be this years bonkers!!

btw i like the new colour codedness!!good work!!

Great list! 3OH!3 A-listed :D

Adam Lambert needs to be listed though...soon.

Meh at Alexandra not being listed yet. It's not as if she's any better than anything on there instead of her.

dog days has been in and out of the playlist all year - it was put in after xmas when the song went top 40, then it was re-added round the brit awards time when it was penned for release on 22/3, then it was removed from the blist when everyone thought it wasn't getting a release, then re-added 2 weeks ago to the alist when the official release was changed to 12/4!!

I'll stop ranting at the minute but another problem I have with Radio 1 is that it seems to act as a barrier for other songs achieving #1. For example Train. Look, it seems to be 1-3 on iTunes in many countries and probably in the charts for those countries too. They don't stand a chance in the UK without radio 1 backing, just because it's the wrong genre or whatever for Radio 1 to playlist.

The only artists over 40 that Radio 1 will playlist are U2, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Primal Scream.(Citation needed)

Good. It's a horrible song.

Radio 1 will probably playlist in the end once its popularity begins to peak. Train aren't exactly the sort of band that Radio 1 would playlist though, and it would be a bit hypocritical of Radio 1 to playlist them imo.

Wonder why Acapella hasn't been added yet?
Radio 1 tends to playlist indie bands with whatever chart success they have. While the pop acts when they flop tend to struggle to be in the playlist. Sophie is just a great example of this. Even after 'Heartbreak' Radio 1 doesn't believe in her. Or maybe they think that the song is too 'old' for their young auditory...

It's on the B List...
