Posted April 15, 201015 yr The UK charts are about to be shaken up, a source reportedly told The Sun. As well as sales, Youtube, Myspace etc. hits would be included to "give a more accurate reflection of the country's most popular music" as "the way people consume music is so vast, just relying on sales data seems old hat". I hope this is not true tbh. It could stop great songs that sell well but get few internet hits from even charting. I'm not even sure how it would work, and haven't the OCC caused enough stir by changing their website for the worst? What do you all think of this?
April 15, 201015 yr Lol, that isn't true. Note 'The Sun' and 'reportedly'. Edited April 15, 201015 yr by BraySayer
April 15, 201015 yr Author Lol, that isn't true. Note 'The Sun' and 'reportedly'. It has rumoured a lot though, I wouldn't rule out the OCC f***ing it all up up even more tbh
April 15, 201015 yr  This is a terrible idea. It would ruin the charts, as the official chart is supposed to be based on sales but as for the chart i think it's better now they have reverted back to a top 100 for the singles & albums charts and as for it coming from the Sun, i wouldn't believe the date & time on the print
April 15, 201015 yr I wouldn't be surprised, the American chart is a bit like that. They include sales, airplay & streaming. Including YouTube/MySpace hits could be ok, but I don't think I'd like the UK including airplay, as that would stop songs like "On A Mission" doing as well, as Radio 1 didn't play it. But I think this could mean their are less one week 1s, and less songs debuting at #1, which would be good.
April 15, 201015 yr I'd actually sort of like this :kink: Allowing downloads into the chart hasn't turned it into the nightmare that everyone expected it to a year ago, songs still enter and leave as they did in the early 2000s. Songs to have more longevity can only be good, and adding in streaming could balance out the airplay effect because people will listen to whatever they want. I bet at least three Eurovision songs would be in the top 75 right now if YouTube was allowed (though not our own )
April 15, 201015 yr So instead of having to listen to Chasing Cars all the time and then thickos going and downloading it years after it has been released we get to include songs that are new, haven't even been released yet, buzz songs, album tracks that are getting word of mouth recommendation? I'm all for it.
April 15, 201015 yr Having just read the story, it seems like it's a Radio 1 chart not an official chart. Maybe the OCC are planning on moving the official chart elsewhere so Radio 1 need a replacement? http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showb...l#ixzz0l23XmSfq

Silly argument really  I don't like the idea having airplay/video play in a sales chart.

April 15, 201015 yr the current charts are already slow and boring with only 2 or 3 new entries per week. compared to 12 or 13 back in the late 90's early 00's. Including airplay and Youtube hits will make it even slower and more boring than it already is. Plus songs which are not released to itunes have no chance of reaching the top 20,( eg in the US charts) because sales would still account for 75% of the chart points.
April 15, 201015 yr The official chart should be based only on the sales but I wouldn't mind watching an alternative chart which counts youtube / myspace / etc. hits.
April 15, 201015 yr I read that in The Sun yesterday. The BBC have employed people to test out charts that combine sales and online streaming ect. to give 'a more accurate' reflection of people's music interests. I imagine this would turn our charts into a version of the US Hot 100. It would slow the pace of the chart right right down :kink:. So long to our short stay #1's if it comes into fruition.

More new entries , more 1-week #1's and songs debuting at this position, just like the good old days (ie before the internet & Itunes) More unreleased & buzz tunes / new music (the internet is supposed to have music easier to access, which - sadly - isn't refected in the charts nowadays) More indie music !!!! Less Itunes domination
April 15, 201015 yr No, no, no, no, no..... Am I right in thinking this 'new' concept would allow people to constantly view youtube vids, each time counting as a 'sale' towards the chart??! I know people complain about the charts not accuratey reflecting what people are listening to, but they're close enough aren't they!?!! Afterall the UK top 40 has always been a chart compiled on what music people are BUYING! theres a big diffrence between liking a record so much you would part with your money, and just clicking on a free video on some website!! The top 40 should stay as it is.

Not on what they are getting for free!!!! :puke2: Then with that logic they should also count illegal and free downloads into the charts, right?? it's a silly idea really.
