Posted May 1, 201015 yr Aka, my top 100 songs of the 90's which I've been compiling for the last few hours, as inspired by the 'What are you listening to threads'. Please don't close/move to the personal charts forum as it's not intended for that, it's hopefully to provoke some nostalgic discussion through my choices and laugh at some of my inclusions/exclusions. Besides nobody ever looks in that sub forum anymore :drama: All (most) genres are represented here, but I warn you, it's biased towards some late 90's flops in places  I'll do ten at a time with some blurb and videos of anything I think people may have forgotten about. Enjoy, and discuss/offer me recommendations if you will; 100. Coolio feat 40 Thevz - C U When U Get There (1997) 99. SWV - Right Here (1993) 98. Sarah McLachlan - Adia (1998) 97. Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby (1996) 96. Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm (1994) 95. Seal - Kiss From A Rose (1994) 94. Finley Quaye - Sunday Shining (1997) esvJqyw9rBA 93. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (1997) 92. Alda - Real Good Time (1998) dJeehKPijdM 91. Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger (1996) Kicking off the first ten then is a couple of R&B #3 hits from the US, the stunning voice of Sarah McLachlan with one of her few UK hits, a classic from Mariah and a weird rock ballad sung by a man with the lowest voice ever which I can't help but absolutely adore for some strange reason. A timeless ballad from Seal, a forgotten indie/pop/soul? moment from the forgotten Finley Quaye, a classic million seller from Natalie Imbruglia, Icelandic weirdo Alda with a classic #8 SMASH from 1998 and one of two Oasis songs in this chart (and one of only about three of their's I've ever liked )
May 1, 201015 yr Ooh, slightly surprised to see SWV in here, good song. I think I prefer "Weak" by them though. Pleased to see Mariah as well, definitely one of her best 90s songs I think. Alda...is quite scary and Finley Quaye isn't really my sort of thing. Is it bad that I knew of him, but only through Beverley Knight name dropping him when mentioning who some producers on her album had worked with? I always think I should do one of these, but I mostly know the big hits from the 90s and I'm certainly not properly familar with the music of the first half of the decade.

There are a couple more Mariah to come although I prefer her 00's stuff actually :o Haha, yes Alda was a fruit loop, I also loved her second single Girls Night Out (but not enough to feature here) with the infamous lyric 'and we'll always have a reunion, when we're married and cooking an onion' I only like that song by Finley Quaye. Don't worry it's mostly late 90's biased aside from a few songs :heehee: There are definitely some shockers and cringe moments to come though!
May 1, 201015 yr Author 90. Steps - One For Sorrow (1998) 89. Hepburn - I Quit (1999) 88. Emilia - Big Big World (1998) _8gmih2xsQQ 87. Britney Spears - Sometimes (1999) 86. Dannii Minogue - All I Wanna Do (1997) 85. Mariah Carey - Someday (1991) NreMkXWXdnU 84. D:Ream - U R The Best Thing (1994) 83. OMC - How Bizarre (1996) 82. Steps - Love's Got A Hold On My Heart (1999) 81. Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle (1999) A poppier ten here. (The only two) Steps songs, both UK #2's. A girlband gem from Hepburn which was on the Buffy soundtrack, a charming top 5 hit from Swedish singer Emilia, who returned last year with the similarly titled and equally fantastic You're My World, Britney's second single and Dannii Minogue's biggest solo hit up until 2003, at one of those rare times in her career when she was bigger than Kylie!!! A joyous uptempo moment from Mariah's early career is up next and then my favourite D:Ream single (can't stand Things Can Only Get Better), a 1996 smash from New Zealand, and Christina Aguilera's debut and only 90's single.
May 1, 201015 yr Author LOL I <3 that Seal song. :heehee: It's a guilty pleasure  one for the mum's but I absolutely adore it!

Just when I sway towards the 00s I remember the likes of Always Be My Baby/Emotions/Fantasy/Dreamlover/Vision Of Love/Heartbreaker and realise how hard it is to choose. :o Oh dear! That's up there with Des'ree admitting she'd rather eat toast than see a ghost. In fact, I think the idea of cooking an onion being a joint task is possibly more amazingly bad than Des'ree could ever wish for. Oh it's not that I mind the older songs, I just couldn't see myself putting together a proper list when my knowledge of 1990-1995 is basically Mariah/Whitney/bits of Madonna and the occasional random track. I think most shocking would be if half of the top 10 wasn't the Corrs. 90s could mean all sorts of cringe - Steps/B*Witched/Spice Girls/Aqua/Cartoons. :heehee:
May 1, 201015 yr Author 80. Evelin Samuel & Camille - Diamond Of Night (1999) 79. Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever (1996) 78. Mariah Carey feat Boyz II Men - One Sweet Day (1995) 77. Mr President - Coco Jamboo (1997) cOrc37wNUqU 76. Eternal - Angel Of Mine (1997) 75. Robyn - Show Me Love (1998) 74. E-17 - Each Time (1998) 6v2NtrX1mGQ 73. Lutricia McNeal - Stranded (1998) 72. Jennifer Paige - Crush (1998) 71. Take That - Could It Be Magic (1992) Kicking off this ten is Estonia's 1999 Eurovision entry, the hypnotic Diamond Of Night, which still sounds relevant 11 years on if I'm honest. Welsh singer Donna Lewis' twee top 5 hit and an all time classic from Mariah/Boyz II Men (which spent forever at #1 in the US) follows. Ace of Base wannabe's Mr President's top ten hit Coco Jamboo is followed by A forgotten Eternal single but one of their best for me, the gorgeous Angel Of Mine  Next it's everyone's favourite Robyn (yes I did love her in the 90's, no I didn't board the bandwagon ten years later :P) with her early Britney-esque first top ten hit Show Me Love. Showing that my love for cringeworthy boyband songs isn't a new found fad, up pop E-17 (formerly East 17) with their 1998 #2 hit Each Time and Take That's Barry Manilow cover Could It Be Magic and sandwiched in between are two at the time played to death 1998 releases from US born/European based Lutricia McNeal and US one hit wonder (although she's big still in Germany!?!) Jennifer Paige with a song recently covered on Glee, Crush!

May 1, 201015 yr Author Nice thread Rich! I will be commenting soon :D Thanks Matt! Always nice to reminisce (and an excuse to update my iPod with some classics :heehee:)
May 1, 201015 yr Oh my God, some proper gems there. Seal, Coolio, LUTRICIA McNEAL, SWV, Natalie Imbruglia, Oasis, Crash Test Dummies - much love to all of them. Nothing beats the genius that was ALDA though - I remember the truly shocking matted dreadlocks. ALDA FORUM PRONTO PLEASE
May 1, 201015 yr Oh Mr President, I'd forgotten that song. Now I wish it still was. Alda's song is a great pop record, one of those forgotten gems (it sticks in my mind because it was used in trailers for the Ace Ventura cartoon at the time). Donna Lewis is also a bit of a guilty pleasure. It's one of those rare pop records that doesn't really have a big hook, yet doesn't suffer for it. Nothing so far that would go on my top 100 90s list though.

Oh that's not so bad, I'm not sure I could even limit myself to that many of Beverley's in a 90s countdown! Well, I suppose they'd all feature in mine too. Let's just hope it's "To You I Belong" or "Blame It On The Weatherman" and not "Rollercoaster" for the girls in denim. I'm also enjoying most of what I know from your next lot. Jennifer Paige; Steps; Eternal (though I heard the Monica cover first); Dannii Minogue and Hepburn. "Someday" is brilliant Mariah but I've never been that fussed with "One Sweet Day". :(

Lyrical genius/hairstyle guru - she inspired Faye from Steps to go with the dreadlocks surely? There's no other sane reason to do so.

I can't imagine our lists were ever going to be similar so I'm not surprised  glad you're reading it though :D Coco Jamboo is a bit forgotten although I noticed it on the tracklist of the Floorfillers compilation out at the moment and it refreshed my memory of it! Agree about Donna Lewis, it worms its way slowly into your consciousness but it's incredibly charming.

"Someday" is brilliant Mariah but I've never been that fussed with "One Sweet Day". :( Two B*Witched songs feature, I won't reveal which just yet but it's certainly not Rollercoaster. Glad you're liking them, the Monica cover of that song's almost identical anyway  Shame you don't like One Sweet Day, I think it's really nice, but Someday is just fun and happy! Nice to hear upbeat Mariah rather than ballad Mariah sometimes.
May 1, 201015 yr Steps :kink: a guilty pleasure of mine too Robin S- Show Me Love- CLUB CLASSIC!
