Alicia Keys's song is far from urban. It's contemporary R&B/soul...

I always understood 'Urban' to cover rap, R&B & soul (not sure about reggae)?

Is everyone who is black considered as RnB/Urban or something? Personally, I'd say Dirtee Disco is Dance, Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart is Soul, Gettin' Over as Dance and Can't Be Tamed as Pop.

I wouldn't say either of Dizzee's or Alicia's are what I would class as urban. :|

No way does it cover R&B and soul. For me, urban is Hip Hop and Rap. Nothing more. And some people on this forum just go over-the-top whenever a pop/R&B song charts and label it urban, such as 'Eenie Meenie'.

Apparently so. I really don't how why a race is put into one genre.

I describe 'urban' as hip hop/rap, R&B and reggae/dancehall (and also drum n bass to a certain extent, but 'urban' DnB isn't the stuff that does well in the charts like Pendulum and Chase & Status)

It's a fact that most black artists fit into one of those genres. Not *all* of them though - for example, Alexandra Burke is firmly in the pop genre. And it clearly doesn't work the other way round either as Eminem is white and is very clearly a hip hop/rap artist.

Most British hip hop/rap artists tend to go into other genres as well - for example, Dirtee Disco and Good Times are hip hop/dance - but I still think that counts as urban.

Mind you, in my mind, urban is not a bad thing at all. :P

But if it's true that they don't even attempt to mime at the chorus and just dance around during it, I might have to release my frustration out in here.
No you won't. Seeing as their single won't be released for another few weeks or whatever, you can all go to the 'Britains Got Talent' thread, in the reality TV forum, and moan there. Obviously same rules apply (no personal insults just because people think the opposite blah blah). That's what that thread is there for.

Oooh. Get me. Haha

Anyone else get the feeling Alicia could potentially end up doing a 'Hot N' Cold'/'Disturbia' now she's top 10? I don't know why, but I get the feeling she's going to be in the Top 10 for a while...

How is Reggae urban?

It depends whether you go by the conventional meaning of 'urban' which is linked to living in the cities (a city is an urban area). So Hip-Hop/Grime etc is Urban. R&B originates from Motown and that isn't Urban. Modern "R&B" (aka $h!t) is urban.

Reggae is not urban. It originates from soul, blues, (early) R&B and Jazz.

There has been fusions of Hip-Hop and Reggae though like Sean Paul.

Bob Marley is a reggae artist. He's not urban though.

When I say 'reggae' I mean hip hop/reggae infused.

Don't be silly, that will all come when their single is releaased on iTunes. ^_^ :P

Hmm think I may have to stay off here for a while though

Yup, it's been confirmed as Simon Cowell's project, and the public can get involved with the chorus on the BBC Radio 1 website. :)

Simon Cowell project ? :o.. No wonder they are on the show.. Thought it was a bit random otherwise

Have you heard the song.. anything decent ?

It's got James Corden on it, so I automatically hate it. Sorry for being so ignorant or whatever, before hearing it, but honestly that guy puts me off virtually everything. So I'm not looking forward at ALL to seeing this preventing the Song of the year from the number 1! (Kylie's 'All The Lovers') :(

Argh but that's not the same as reggae. :P

It's important (relatively at least ) to distinguish a pure genre from a mixed genre.

It's actually difficult to pigeon-hole any artist because they aren't restricted to one genre. I think that's where 'pop' comes from. While Jazz, R&B and Rock can be defined musically, pop is just basically a left-over genre for anything commercial/mainstream. That's how I interpret it anyway.

In general terms, this is how I define each track in the top 10:

Gettin' Over You - Dance (elements of Hip-Hop though) [only listened to preview]

Nothin' On You - Pop/R&B/Hip-Hop (R&B and Hip-Hop are the dominant genres though)

Ridin' Solo - R&B/Hip-Hop

Candy - Hip-Pop

TSWABH - R&B/Soul

Can't Be Tamed - Electro-Pop

Dirtee Disco - Hip-Hop/Rap

We Dance On - quite hard to tell from the preview ($h!tty R&B probably)

Eenie Meenie - Pop

Solo - R&B/Hip-Hop

I think Ridin Solo is pop

Can't Be Tamed is ok song, but i'm glad to see that she will get finally top 10 in UK.

My rank:

01 See You Again (Rock Mafia Remix)

02 Fly On The Wall

The rest are ok, nothing special.

The Climb

Can't Be Tamed

Party In The USA

Hoedown Throwdown

7 Things

When I Look At You

I think Ridin Solo is pop

Yeah i've tried not you use that term because it's hard to define it really. Is it just something with a simple melody and shallow lyrics?

It's definitely got elements of Hip-Hop in it. R&B is kind of like a bridge-genre between pop and Hip-Hop.

I think many mis-perceive artists and stereotype them. I mean, Rihanna was considered a pop artist from the moment she stepped on the scene but 'Music of the Sun' was Dancehall and 'A Girl Like Me' was heavily influenced by Reggae.

The chorus was played yesterday on Radio 1. It's alright, obviously Buzzjack will hate it forever, but I know I'll love it. It's a charity song appartantly, as well as a new World Cup song. :)

Oh okay. I will have to listen to it before I judge it. Will probably like it though
