^Exactly. The top 20 is played by commercial radio, why would Radio 1 want their playlist to look the same? Criticise them if you want, but at least their playlist is unique, and they give acts a chance.

Why do I get the feeling all the same arguments for Radio 1's indie preference are used every single week? :(

Are you having a laugh? What you're basically saying is that Radio 1 should only play the most commercial songs and anything that's unlikely to make an impact on the charts is not worth playlisting. Do you think popularity is defined purely by record sales? So it doesn't matter that many artists get huge audiences on tour - but only how many singles they sell? No wonder so many new genuinely talented artists struggle to break through when people have such narrow-minded attitudes.

Dont put words in my mouth and misquote what I am stating.R1's remit is to provide music that appeals to the 16-25 age group the age group that dominates what does well in the singles charts (novelty songs excluded). The point I am making is that R1 producers and DJ's shove acts that they like and listen to on the playlist regularly and young people have no interest in.The likes of Paolo Nutini, Jonzi, Darwin Deez,BBC.R1 do a good enough job of ignoring new acts that would appeal to a young age group anyway.Eliza Doolittle (her last song added only because her 1st went Top 20), Rox,Sabrina Washington as well as older acts like Lemar, Sophie Ellis Bextor. There is nothing unique about their playlist at all.

I'd argue that Paolo Nutini appeals to a wide audience including teens and 20 somethings. And though Lemar did alright with the Hits' lead single, I think he is fastly losing appeal. Same with Sophie, I don't think she is very popular or relevant at all anymore. Even with radio 1 backing, she probably wouldn't have cracked the top 10, and she did only peak at mid-20s in reality with Bittersweet, which is poor for a lead single by a reasonably big name. Sabrina may have been more popular however I think the playlist slots can support more deserving people (i.e. not ones that have just finished reality shows!)

I agree about Darwin Deez though. The last single just scraped the top 40 on iTunes.

I'm no X Factor loon or anything but I think if they are going to playlist, they should playlist the winner rather than the runners up! Not complaining though because I'd rather no X Factor stuff got playlisted.

I don't really see the point of keeping Muse on the A-list either, the record was almost a total flop, and hasn't been around for about a month now!

I hope they don't playlist Drake again, anytime soon. His first three singles (Best I Ever Had, Forever and Over) all missed the top 40 with radio 1 support, so I think their help could go elsewhere by pushing other songs into the top 40 which don't have the backing.

Can't see Roll Away Your Stone doing particularly well but it was probably worth playlisting. The Cave did very well afterall.

They don't have to provide ANY music that their audience likes. It's not a legal requirement. They're trying to introduce the public to new acts, which is a very good thing in my opinion, even if said acts never make it commercially.

Your allegation that people aren't interested in Paolo Nutini is your most ridiculous one so far - the guy has a top 5 single that is damn near classic status (Last Request) and 2 million-selling albums. He actually outsold his début album with his second one, and that NEVER happens. Paolo Nutini is an extremely popular artist and R1 are right to playlist him.

Again dont misquote me I am talking about popularity amougst the 16/25 age group.I know that most of Paolo Nutini's fans, single and album buyers are not the R1 target audience but older adults.

Other than the lead single which did well, all his last singles have been playlisted and not one has even scrapped the Top 60.He is no differnt from Michael Buble in who his target market is. It is a waste constantly playlisting him on R1 even you cannot disagree with that Bray

not all 16-25's are like us, in fact i'd say a lot more are into the Mumfords & Sons and Paolo Nutini's of the world than the Alexandra Burke's and JLS's.
JLS new song is a travesty. Their vocals are so done by computers. Ear-rape!

Agreed. BuzzJack caters for a specific market, pop basically, hence most of us are pop fans on here.

A large majority of my friends are into indie or 'classic' rock music and others are into dance - not just commercial dance but house, trance, techno etc...the sort of stuff that never crosses into the mainstream. A few of my friends are like me and mostly all about pop, but not many...

The Radio 1 playlist is not the BuzzJack FM playlist, and hence most of us are never going to be happy with it on the whole, but it is pretty varied overall I think. It's by far the best mainstream station in the country - compare it to the likes of Heart that churn out the same old tired 70's and 80's 'club classics' with lashings of hourly Cheryl Cole, Take That and Journey on the hour every hour for 'more music variety' Sorry but I don't call replaying the same 10 pop tracks all day variety. By contrast, I had Radio 1 on for an hour earlier and heard Yolanda Be Cool, Scouting For Girls, Robyn, Roll Deep, Green Day and Mumford & Sons. A pretty varied mix by all accounts, and this is just the daytime playlist. The evenings are much more specialist and niche.

My friends are the same some are into the classic rock, some new indie, some dance. It's really varied my musical tastes as I listen to as much non mainstream music as I do mainstream now.

At least 50% of the stuff I listen to never gets released in the UK. Usually still pop or dance music or pop or dance hybrids with some other genres, but you won't hear them on the radio, more's the pity

It's my specialist genre though  My forays into indie, urban and other genres admittedly are usually what I do hear in the charts/on the radio, as I don't actively dig around for music I don't know from these genres as they're generally of less interest to me.

Marrb, if that's really your argument, I can immediately null it by telling you Radio 1 do a lot of audience research to decide what goes on their playlist. They know what they're doing.

Also, only one of Sunny Side Up's 4 singles missed the top 60 - Candy peaked at #19, Coming Up Easy #62, Pencil Full Of Lead #17 and 10/10 #51.

Oh dear. :|

I can't see them NOT playlisting Diana somehow, although if it's not there next week it'll be cause for concern...

I Blame Coco is the only new addition that excites me. Basscunter can f*** off, why still support him when his second album and singles from it flopped so tremendously that he had to resort to Ex-celebrity Big Brother?

Oh dear. :|

They have it on at work in the office and I'm not allowed to change it as they all seem to love it. I'm itching to change it to Radio 1 if I'm even sitting in there for more than 15 mintues. There's only so many more times I can hear Empire State of Mind in any incarnation, or Pixie's ridiculously overplayed weakest single, before I want to tear my ears off :drama:

It's times like this that I'm glad for Asda FM. Well, apart from their bummage of Lady Gaga and 2000-2002 garage hits (if I hear Mis-Teeq's 'All I Want' again, I will not be held responsible for my actions)
