I think it is a pretty unexpected single, considering many fans were expecting 'Scheiße'. I don't mind about the song being a single too much now, I've listened to it more recently and it's summery song. :D Let's hope it will do well and the video isn't a disappointment.
I don't think they were "expecting". I think they/we wanted 'Scheiße'. I think most people were expecting 'Marry the Night' or 'You & I'. With 'Scheiße' & 'Americano' being the general fan favourites to be released. Well that's what I got from all/most the speculation anyway haha.

The concept sounds like it would suit the song, but that just sounds like another 'The Edge Of Glory' video, GaGa walking on streets. This should be better though, since there could be more scenery as it's from New York to Nebraska, rather than 'The Edge Of Glory' where it was just a studio with one New York street.

I saw it coming, I knew it would end up a single at some point as soon as I heard the album. Well actually the song has grown on me. Still not the best single choice, though it should show another side as her first ballad single. I'd say it's overtaken Edge Of Glory now, and my least favourite is probably Electric Chapel (still a 9/10). That's disregarding the bonus tracks, the best of which (Fashion Of His Love) being an 8/10. I can't see Y&I doing any better than Judas/Edge Of Glory did, but then again Heart will love it and it isn't OA/OS.

You can watch the radio interview here too; and you can see what goes on when she arrives and they meet, and what they talk about between the breaks which I always find fascinating to watch. I love how she directs the interview, that that she lets a fan come in and get an autograph and how she gets into her own songs; she seems so carefree and laidback throughout, plus she looks adorable

I've said it before, but I really do think You and I is the most logical single choice; she needs to regain public faith and favour before she puts out something like Scheiße and this has the potential to be a big crossover hit, especially if she performs it at the VMAs; we shall see. I love the concept of the video too, and that they're shooting it on location; I think it could be, along with EOG, GaGa's most personal yet.

"It's really cinematic and beautiful; I have never seen light on film the way the way it looked here in Nebraska - I mean it just looked like God's light was shining right through that barn."

Can't wait.

I take back what I said about not being happy with this single choice, I'm loving this song again now, and I think it'll give her a reasonably big hit. I'm thinking (well, more hoping) that this could do a 'The Lazy Song' and possibly get her another UK #1, obviously depending on what else is released around the same time. This is going to appeal to an audience that probably wouldn't usually listen to her music (the older-ish generation), as well as her usual fanbase, therefore a clever choice in terms of bumping the album sales and keeping her exciting (unpredictable). If for some reason the single doesn't do as well as hoped there's always 'Scheiße' 'Marry The Night' or 'Americano' she can fall back on for the fifth single which any would no-doubtably do as well as her previous singles. This is guarenteed to be a smash in America though isn't it, I mean it went Top 10 on iTunes the week of the album release. Looking forward to seeing the video now, as long as we don't get another 'TEoG' joby I'll be happy.
Good choice. It's nice to see her finally take some risks with single selections.

BTW and Judas weren't big enough risks for ya? :P

I'll probably end up loving this tbh. As I said a few posts ago, this is growing on me lots, and I can see it growing further. It is nice for her to have a ballad single at last, and this probably will do better than at least Judas, seeing as airplay has time to kick in.
I've been listening to this song a lot for the past five days or so now, and it was such an amazing song to listen to in the sun. The video should show that too, as GaGa said in the radio interview in Nebraska it was very hot during the video shoot.
I do like the song, and as a single its different from her other releases, its also a grower andf should sell steadily over a lengthy period for her.

TUMBLR HAS AN EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK AT THE VIDEO.

I really don't care if this is the most logical single or whatever... For an album so batshit crazy and full of memorable moments she sure is choosing the most safe and boring singles. I still absolutely despise this - Shania Twain wouldn't even touch such rubbish.

"Born This Way" was released alongside other uplifting songs... "We R Who We R", "Firework" etc.

"Judas" isn't risky, it's just that the public were too dumb to notice it's metaphorical imagery and thought she was making a comment against religion.

I think this is an excellent album and am a fan of her music 80% of the time but get real people. You can be a massive fan and not be "persuaded" that this is suddenly an excellent choice of single. It's nothing short of terrible. It's in no form indicative of the rest of the album, in fact it sticks out like a sore thumb on the rest of the record and spoils the flow. It's lyrically and musically poor. How would you feel loving this song then purchasing the rest of the record to find a record as ridiculously electronic and crazy as BTW is.

At best it's a lazy, weak choice of single from a woman I viewed to be the very antithesis of such a practice, at worst it's a total con...

^ Everything said there, not to mention it's made all the worse and more offensive by it being her worst track to date. A dull attempt to get lightning to strike twice as it had done with Speechless by making a cheesy 'Elton John sings over We Will Rock You' pastiche and entirely unrepresentative of where she is artistically.

I do kind of agree with this, while I did say above it's nice for her to have a ballad single and I won't deny it's growing on me, I agree you can't say it's a brilliant single choice. I think it will go top 10 but I can't see how people can see it's really the best choice, when we have Scheisse, Marry The Night, Americano and even Bloody Mary (which is still a more downtempo track yet electronic enough to represent the album). You & I is very good in a 'cheesy' way (I am a loon, I was bound to at least like it) but it really does sound totally out of place - much like Run The World (Girls) does on the largely mellow 4. I think she should have done a couple more ballads for this album, so You & I wasn't quite so out of place in it all.

I mean it will probably sell the album but some old woman listening to Heart will probably hear/buy it and then die of shock from Heavy Metal Lover and Government Hooker. I think she should have maybe either had more ballads on BTW (only one or two though) or kept You & I for a re-package with a couple of 'mellow' tracks on. Probably the latter, BTW being totally electronic would be have been nice.

Bloody Mary would NOT do good if released as a single, the references to church organs and bells and the title itself would put off people and the radio.

Still don't want You and I as the fourth single but we'll see how it charts..

I don't think BM would do too well either, but I think it would be a more representative of the album, I mean You & I is more like a Shania Twain song, and god knows nothing else on the album is even close to Shania!
