Her album sales are fading in the US, as is the public's goodwill towards her theatrics, she needs to push a single that would appeal to the casual buyer aswell as her fanbase.

You may think it goes against her artistic sensibilities, but she has talked numerous times about how she loves stadium rock and how artists such as Queen inspire her, and this just shows it more than any of her other tracks. My opinion remains the same, it may not be her at her batshit crazy best, but then radio aren't playing her anymore at her batshit crazy best. If she gets a hit out of this, it would help in the longterm and make sure that her star (in the US) doesn't fade.

Also, I think it's hardly her worst track, that honour goes to Money Honey.

'LoveGame' and 'Boys Boys Boys' are both far worse than 'Money Honey' - although all three are diabolical (like most of The Fame to be honest).

Oh this is one of my least favourites :( I've listened to this less than 5 times since I got the album. That said, it's a refreshing choice after all of the club-banger/disco-stompers/general dancey choons we've had from this album so far.

She is probably going to waste a VMA performance on this isn't she? 'Scheiße' has so many more possibilities for something like that. Sigh.

This was one of my favourite album tracks the first time I heard the album ('Marry the night' ), but I never saw it as single material.

To be honest the only reason You and I got top 10 on iTunes is because she promoted the hell out of the song before the release of the album hence it flew up. Whether it will go top 10 again on iTunes is another question (by this time, all the fans practically have the songs and will rely on casual buyers to see if they click with it).
Yes it's true to say she's been inspired by stadium rock, Queen etc whatever but it's still all besides the point when it's the one such track on an electronic record. Also it's very Shania Twain and country in twang. It's a step back in her evolution and I doubt will do anything to further her career. I'd go as far to say that its inclusion on the record and now as a single is purely a matter of sentimentality on her behalf and it's shocking she and her label would allow her to tarnish her artistic integrity for what should be such a minor (at most) aspect of single choice and artistic evolution...
I'm not really happy with the choice. This could be a bigger hit in the USA but not successful in Europe imo.

Ballads tend to fare better in the UK compared to the US though... (California King Bed is an example..)

LADY GAGA - You And I: 0.283 (+ 0.112)

You & I has a slightly rocky/country twinge (hence the Shania Twain comparisons), a sound which is more popular in the US.

I was hoping for Marry The Night or Heavy Metal Lover.

Never would have expected this to be a single..

Like Jake perfectly put, it does not represent the album. But it will be huge for her in America, us crackers will eat that shit up like Jennifer Lopez's ass in a lingerie shop.

HOWEVER. She has been INCREDIBLY safe after 'Judas'... I think it's under performance scared her label and Gaga.

SCHEISSE IS THE BEST THING ON THE ALBUM!

PS- Oricon, LMFAO this is not a ballad... wtf. No.

I don't think she's necessarily playing it safe. I had a feeling GaGa would want to release this song as a single at one time, and I believe it would do a lot better as an earlier single rather than the fifth or sixth. I also remember after the release of the album GaGa Daily created a poll asking what fans wanted as a single from the album, which GaGa tweeted saying she was keeping a close eye on - the poll had 'Scheiße' most voted by quite a large gap. So perhaps GaGa saw the demand for it as a single and decided it would do a lot better as a fifth or sixth single than 'Yoü and I'.
I think it's a great choice, she is taking a risk and I'm behind her 100% with this single choice (it's kindah like if they'd gone with "Speechless" over "Alejandro").
How is this song "taking a risk"? It's surely one of the most safe choices from the album, no? A risk to me, would be releasing something like 'Government Hooker', 'Bloody Mary', 'Americano', 'Heavy Metal Lover' or 'Scheiße' or something. Not this. I recommend people stick with The 4-non-blondes 'What's Going On?' original. It's far superior, imo.

And again my ballad telling skills fails again <_<

Pretty sure You and I is a slow to mid tempo ballad though...
