The contest just gone my entry finished 18th (it would've been a few places higher if 12-1 points system was used). Either way, it was definitely one of the top 20 most popular songs in the contest.

I have just used random.org to split the 48 countries into two semi's. I have bolded all countries that voted Utopia and put how many points they gave in brackets.

Semi 1:

Kopecka (13)

Bhangra

People's Republc of Jester (3)

United States of Jack

Xanaga

Ben's Sanctuary

Botanikka

Ojnoj

Spizil

Kylienips (1)

Kingdom of Shadow

Ashton

Espen

Dulpaen (3)

Quotosibb

Numayania

Skall (10)

BaNG (3)

Nonsuch

Utopia

Jamora

Greenland

Sangria

Mdice

Semi 2:

Cadbury

Hendinia

Letland

Greenfroze

Torchwood

UnoShake

Land of Jack (18)

Zechonia (18)

Urvunia

Palmyra

New Caprica (18)

Tinnmark

Liechenstaan

Juranabaijan

Yuxhaaq

FNT Nickodonia (7)

Camdonia (7)

Dalisska

Angelicland

Eledan (13)

Caerfyrddia (18)

Biginia Zaragovina

Eggebac

Tréstamford-Gallagher (13)

I would never have qualified despite deserving to be in the final. Surely instances like these are what we should be trying to avoid! NO SEMIS!!!!

I know what you mean, and imo this is by far the strongest argument for keeping the 'big final'. People at least have the opportunity to vote for all of the songs that they love.

You are forgetting that in the semis you would have less competition and so more people would be likely to vote for your song with higher points...

I don't think this kind of ifs buts and maybes arguement is particularly strong

I actually misunderstood the voting question, I think I want to chance to old scoring system. I like the new votes because they allow you to vote for more songs and countries, not that you can give more points overall.

Well that would apply to everyone so a song in the 'wrong semi' would still be at a disadvantage no matter how you look at it...

That's a two-way street. There are as many ifs and buts from the "semi side", such as "but I can't listen to 50 songs at once", to which the answer is "nobody is asking you to listen to 50 songs at once!"

I agree with what Tom said - Utopia was next in my list and just missed out on points and it may well have worked out that way for others too, so if it was a semi I would have voted Utopia.

Yes, but had you not been in the semi like RFC has posted above when using random.org, then you couldn't have voted for it. This highlights the disadvantage of semifinals. And Harve is right, the 'wrong semi' will always exist, so it just confirms how crap semifinals are for a lot of people.

I admit that activity has been quite low, but it's up to all of us to do something about that. I made an effort, but this can't be said for some people here who are in a hump about the final format. If I'm wrong about that and you're too busy to make the effort, fair enough, but that issue has nothing to do with the big final format.

What Harve said - i.e. it's not only Utopia 'next in the list' but all the others, plus it'd be 10 instead of 15 countries voted for. So we're back.

Just even if we used that plan RFC 'randomised' I'd have DNQd as well. All 3 of my 18's are in another semi, plus almost all of the 15's and 13's i received are in the opposite semi bar Camdonia.

Cadbury (10)

Letland (4)

Land of Jack (6)

Camdonia (15)

Eggebac (10)

'Less competition' arguement is bollocks in this case. 45 vs. 128. LMAO!

ONE BIG FINAL. YES.

But surely if a song deserves to win then it will get the overwhelming majority it needs no matter what semi it's in? I see what you're saying, but I don't think you can say Utopia would have DNQd, because you don't know who would have voted for it...

Not necessarily. Most people here are pleased with Eric Saade winning, but I'm not because I just don't like the song. I wouldn't have voted for it in the semifinals. And I've missed out on the final by a few points on a number of occasions when other people who liked my songs were in the other semi, hence why I prefer the big final because it gets rid of any of the problems that the semifinals bring. ^_^

From what i gathered you are generalising people and thinking that everybody sends some poppy cheesy pop $h!t (that have won both of last contests btw) whereas it's not, and i for one would prefer not to wait for this moment when i find an obscure stunning cross-over genre entry for all the time i have been participated (like every 20 contests) but actually being able to at least think i HAVE A CHANCE with ANY song.

IMO one big final boosts 'indie' (or how i call them 'fan fave') entries whereas pop songs have to show how good they are to be able to succeed. PERFECT.

I'm not assuming that at all? But all the winners (besides Roll Deep which only won because it took off in the UK Charts - welcome to Buzzjack) have come top 2 in their semis, therefore showing is a song has the potential to WIN then it WILL DO WELL in the semis. There's no denying that, so it's not going to affect the winners at all.

I'd like to have semis back because it makes the contest more exciting, the fun seems to have been missing from the last few contests so maybe semis could help. Regardless of songs qualifying or not, I still listen to both semis so I don't miss out on any possible discoveries that failed to qualify. Oh and old scoring system, I'd like the contest to retain it's relation to Eurovision. :P

Winners/runner ups (mostly the latter though) of the semis sometimes fail to achieve even Top 10, and vice versa songs from like Top 6 win.

And it's not about winning at all (hello, there are actually some other songs participating too), it's at least about all the people being able to hear your song and if you finish high - that is a bonus! I could name quite a few songs that could've done wonders (I'm not saying win but hey ho who knows) had they qualified...

I'm jumping on the bandwagon now with the "what I would have got" in the semis had we used RFC's random.org bunch...

Semi One (CAN vote for Espen): 44 pts

Semi Two (Can NOT vote for Espen): 82 pts

It's always the indie/more obscure songs that get screweddddd with semis.

Invalid argument imo. EVERYONE has the oportiunity to listen to EVERY song entered because ALL of the links are placed on the semi-final thread.

This is a fictional contest that is supposed to be ENJOYABLE. Competition imo is the thing that makes it enjoyable, semi-finals bring competition as people are not sure as to wether they will qualify or not.

The big final made it boring and my argument for less pages in the final thread i think IS valid. YES. The world cup would have affected it. But not entirely...the game finished before 5PM! And the previous contest had it's results thread down on the ones with semis too! Do you really think a Music Forum's posts are really going to be down from 35-odd pages to 16 pages because of a world cup match that finished a couple of hours before?

Semi finals and new points system. My reason being ~50 songs is way too many to listen to at once, and if you break up your listening, it's easy to forget previous songs without multiple listens.

The 16 page thing came as a bit of a shock, but:

a - Rich was VERY efficient with the results - there weren't about an extra five pages dedicated to 'omg where are the results this is taking so long' etc.

b - We had about a little bit fewer than the normal number of people we normally get viewing the thread - 20 or so in any one go, we normally get about 25-30 - but even so, why weren't most of these people posting? It's a problem we've had long before one big final, which is being scapegoated for inactivity - since about BJSC XXI people have just stopped discussing. It's an illusion that semis lead to loads more interest and activity - the only activity that really comes about are one or two people doing odds before the semis are over, a semi-final results prediction thread, and the results themselves.

c - Compare it with last month and it becomes clear it's not just about the 'one big final' - you've got a nice evening on, people are more likely to spend it outside. Last month's results thread got more pages than we normally get...
