Posted July 2, 201015 yr It's nearly 18 months since we had a #1 last longer than 3 weeks (Lily Allen - The Fear). Do you think this is more a reflection on the quality of recent singles, or the changing nature of the market?
July 2, 201015 yr The reason is because there's hardly been anything good in music atm, and if there was then public clearly missed it.
July 2, 201015 yr Do you think this is more a reflection on the quality of recent singles, or the changing nature of the market? The past always looks better than the present. So I go for the latter. This year has been one of the best if you think of the number of catchy hits. This year reminds me of the year 2000 when there were plenty of short lived no. 1's and one hit wonders. California Gurls will be no. 1 for four weeks I reckon.
July 2, 201015 yr Author The past always looks better than the present. So I go for the latter. This year has been one of the best if you think of the number of catchy hits. Catchy as in 'bubonic plague', you mean? :P California Gurls will be no. 1 for four weeks I reckon. Unlikely in the extreme, given the decline in its lead on iTunes, and the release of JLS's new single next week.
July 2, 201015 yr If it wasn't for JLS I think Katy would easily manage at least 4 weeks :( If it wasn't for Katy, I think Kylie would easily manage 1 week at #1 :P
July 2, 201015 yr Am I the only person that thinks JLS will peak at #2 next week, looks like I'm on my own... I still think Katy might just have another week or two, its got a summer vibe to it, unless D Cup feat Yolanda Be Cool comes out from nowhere, the track is available on downloads from this Sunday. Owl City - Firelies is so far this year's decent #1, and its the only track this year that has spend 3 weeks at #1.
July 2, 201015 yr Its nothing to do with quality of music, its the changing market & release of even more songs, there is now so much more choice and all different types of genres of music are hitting #1 now. I think its a good thing.
July 2, 201015 yr I have been bitchy about the quality of music this year. It has been VERY poor when you compare it to 2009 and even 2008. But the fact is, there have been a lot of strong and pretty decent tracks. That just hasn't been reflected in the #1 singles which 90% have been poor or utterly terrible. The fact that many #1s have dropped off quickly reinforces this. I think the quick turnover at the top is due to the stablising of the download market. It's almost as if the weekly release of new tracks on iTunes has replaced the huge buying of a physical CD in its first week. Very few songs climb up the charts now unless they're from an album that's already available.
July 2, 201015 yr The quality of the songs is not a valid point. I mean, when songs used to be number 1 for 5 weeks or more, people were like "it stays at the top for so long because there's nothing else good out now boooo the music market is $h!t". So you can't use this argument again to say the opposite... Plus people could as well say there is more number ones this year because there is more great singles, that could make sense too. I'd say it's more down to the fact the music market is changing with downloads. July 2, 201015 yr Author Am I the only person that thinks JLS will peak at #2 next week Maybe - but you're definitely not the only one who *hopes* it won't be #1... Owl City - Firelies is so far this year's decent #1, and its the only track this year that has spend 3 weeks at #1. Other than Roll Deep, you mean?

Again reflects how the download market has stablized. Didn't 2008 have the least top 10 hits for years? The top 10 was literally static week by week and loads of songs had 4-5 weeks at the top. Downloads have levelled out now and songs are selling more and falling faster as a result. I don't think the quality of the music scene has that much of an influence. July 2, 201015 yr Author Its nothing to do with quality of music, its the changing market & release of even more songs Or at least *availability* of them, including oldies. there is now so much more choice and all different types of genres of music are hitting #1 now. Do rap & hip-hop now count as different genres, then? :P Yes, there is more choice, but unfortunately people aren't taking much advantage of that, at least in terms of what is selling highly.
July 2, 201015 yr I think the chart in general is speeding up, which I much prefer. 2008 was such a drag and it was basically the same songs every week moving a place or two down every week, and that was boring.
July 2, 201015 yr I think this year has been good for music, its just the best tracks arent peaking at number 1  the longevity of songs at the top usually depicts their status: Owl City spent three weeks at the top, and is by a mile the best number 1 this year- and will probably still be remembered in ten years time, Roll Deep did also spend three weeks there but fell sharply afterwards so it was a bit of a 'summer' flash in the pan- the only other songs that have spent more than a week are Replay, Helping Haiti, Pass Out, Telephone, This Aint a Love Song and Shout- still, many were there in 'default' weeks in which nothing else was there and I doubt that any of these will still be remembered in ten years time California Gurls is not a great track at all, not original in the slightest but it just sounds so summery- you couldnt imagine it wouldnt sell well and that makes it quite likeable, however, once summer is done and the British autumn season comes- CGs sales will tail off very quickly and ultimately, wont still be remembered in ten years time to sum up, I would say that longevity of number 1s has been short as simply, nothing really is a truly brilliant track and those that are havent made it to number 1, of course, some like CG and Good Times would be there because its very summery and appealing- Fireflies is the only modern classic that this year has produced Edited July 2, 201015 yr by chart wizard
July 2, 201015 yr Most tracks are peaking in the top five and hanging around for ages (Starstrukk, She Said, TiK ToK, Rude Boy, Empire State Of Mind Part 1 + 2 etc), eventually outselling the #1 of their respective chart weeks. That's what's annoying. For example She Said will forever be known as a #3 hit even though it's totally outsold This Ain't A Love Song and is around the same sales as Telephone, Empire State Of Mind outsold Break Your Heart bigtime and then the next week at #3 it was kept from #1 by Forever Is Over and Oopsy Daisy even though ESOM outsold both put together now. There's probably better examples but it seems the best songs are the ones that hang around for ages without getting a #1, whereas the poorer songs are going straight in at #1 and aren't sticking around long.
July 2, 201015 yr Author Downloads have levelled out now and songs are selling more and falling faster as a result. I don't think the quality of the music scene has that much of an influence. We do seem to be heading back towards front-loaded sales, but obviously that'll only apply to pre-album singles. Also, there's not the urgency that short-term availability of physical singles used to create - songs may debut high, but they don't normally vanish in weeks, as they used to pre-downloads. Also, there may be an increasing tendency to release more singles before their parent album comes out, to stop the best tracks being cherry-picked too soon.
July 2, 201015 yr I think it depends on the competition in the market...if there are a number of popular singles out within a period, then singles will struggle to hold on to the top spot but lack of competition can mean a single hanging around at the top for longer.
