Wouldn’t be so sure the rebels are better but hopefully it turns out that way.

Assad has fled the country. His forces barely put up a fight. No chemical weapons used, no resistance, the rebels just swept the country in a week. Quite bizarre really.

What is that 11-year-old going to think about Israel as he grows up? That's why Israel's murderous campaign is so insane. It just stirs up further hatred against their state.

He has undermined his whole ethos of anti-war when you allow massacres that really weren’t necessary. Dropping bombs on tents of dozens of people is obscene then knowing it’ll overwhelm hospitals th

If it were a year ago I would have been stating that they were just as bad as each other, but their recent messaging has been somewhat conciliatory for an Islamist group. Meanwhile Assad was possibly one of the worst dictators in the world and has been a decade.

Hopefully the Prime Minister works with the leader of the rebels, this Al-Jolani, to set up a new state of governance that's good for the people. Very good news to see Damascus falling this morning. When these things happen, clear the status quo wasn't really that, that there was a lot of moving and maneuvering behind the scenes, and Assad's time had clearly run out.

Wonder where Assad went? He has been quiet for days. Personally I don’t think he was even in Syria the past week

Mysterious. Apparently Assad’s plane took dramatic U-Turn’s before disappearing off the radar with people now claiming his plane ‘likely crashed’ and he’s dead. All very bizarre. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/32181235/assa...ane-vanish/amp/

Russia say he made it out alive. It was a Russian style military plane he left in so he could well be in Russia

Amidst these developments, reports regarding Assad’s fate remain conflicting. Some media outlets suggested that he may have been killed in a plane crash. The aircraft, operated by Syrian Air, departed from Damascus airport around the same time that rebels were reported to have taken control of the capital. Flight tracking data indicated that the plane initially headed towards Syria’s coastal region, a stronghold of Assad’s Alawite community, but then unexpectedly made a U-turn and vanished from radar.

Two Syrian sources told Reuters that there is a strong likelihood the plane crashed following its abrupt change in course and subsequent disappearance.

Contrary to these claims, Russian officials stated that Assad successfully departed Damascus, disputing the crash reports.

Confirmed by Russia that he’s now in Moscow

BREAKING

Deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow, Russian state media agencies report, citing sources in the Kremlin.

Reports also say that Assad and his family have been granted asylum by Russia.

The BBC has not been able to independently verify the information.”

I figured he’d go to Russia not the UAE, it’s a lot safer for someone like him

Assad claims he never intended to leave, and only left due to his forces not fighting and Russia flying him out with their forces as there was no point staying if his forces weren’t fighting. Seems like PR to me. He was long gone days before.

In other related news, Israel has been bombing the hell out of Syria to destroy any aircraft’s or weapons left. They have also announced they plan to expand and increase the population of the Golan Heights

I am skeptical considering how the ceasefire in Lebanon ended… is*ael ignored it and continued bombing soooo

But a step in the right direction for sure

A "pause" doesn't fill me with much confidence.
Satanyahu says Isr*el’s cabinet will not meet to approve the ceasefire deal. What a despicable monster. If his genocidal intentions have not been crystal clear for the past 15 months, hopefully this opens the eyes of the blind west governments who have ignored the genocide and continued to fund and support him, but as always I am skeptical. He is absolutely vile and has a special special place in hell reserved just for him
Western governments haven’t igorned the genocide they are complicit in it. Israel is basically their colony in the Middle East they use to control the rest of the region.
It’s one of them situations where nothing good can really happen at this point. If you agree a ceasefire Israel basically have a date where they have to stop killing so before then they’ll amp it up and kill as many as possible. Of course it’s good Palestinians can return to their homes except the homes are gone…. blown to smithereens. The hostages nobody really knows how many are still alive I suspect it’s not that many which will also cause huge problems. The full scale of how many children have lost limbs and the true death toll will be astronomical. The fallout will not be pretty but the sooner the killing stops the better I guess

Trump is apparently serious about 'cleaning out Gaza', exactly what Netanyahu wanted, and an action that is effectively ethnic cleansing.

Pretty much all the international community seems to be condemning it.

Saudis would be crucified by Muslims if they allowed that so will never happen. I do wonder though how do they shower? Where’s the toilets? It’s not a great situation and there are no good solutions. People blabber on about two state solution but I’ve been hearing that forever and after October 7!the Israelis have the best excuse to always be against that.

So it’s basically live under occupation which is not good either. Good luck to whoever has to work on sorting that out. Trump has to keep the Israelis happy to get this hostage deal completed which removed the excuse for Israel to be in Gaza again if he seriously means it then he’s very oblivious to how the Arab nations will react.

Hamas have halted the ceasefire deal. Claiming Israel haven’t fully stopped shelling.

"Over the past three weeks, the leadership of the resistance has monitored the enemy’s violations and its failure to comply with the terms of the agreement.

"These violations include delaying the return of displaced persons to northern Gaza, targeting them with shelling and gunfire in various areas of the Strip, and failing to allow the entry of humanitarian aid in all its agreed-upon forms.

"Meanwhile, the resistance has fully honoured its commitments.

"Accordingly, the release of the Zionist prisoners, which was scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025, will be postponed until further notice, pending the enemy’s compliance and the retroactive fulfillment of the past weeks’ obligations.

"We reaffirm our commitment to the terms of the agreement as long as the occupation adheres to them."

For Israel to resume the ‘war’ again with hundreds of thousands having returned would be pretty disastrous. So will have to see what happens from here or what this is all about from Hamas.

‘Israel’ have clearly been sabotaging this ceasefire since the very beginning so it’s not surprising how they are blaming the other side for breaking the deal.
"The decision that I passed unanimously in the cabinet is this: If Hamas does not return our hostages by Saturday noon - the ceasefire will be terminated, and the IDF will return to intense fighting until Hamas is finally defeated."

While it seems like a solvable situation if this does escalate into the ceasefire being scrapped and Israel bombing again it would be a huge failure on Trump’s part. He’s come across completely one sided and ultimately if hostages are Hamas only leverage they’re going to think twice about giving them up if the plan is to remove Palestinians from Gaza after.
