Just when will our weather forecasters get the weather correct or keep their mouths shut.

This is the second year that they said we will have a barbeque summer - but where are they.

We haven't had a really good summer since 2006

Last year was a complete washout as is this year apart from 2 weeks in June.

I don't see how 2 weeks makes a summer.

We really deserve a brilliant summer especially after the winter we just had.

With global warming they said we'd have hotter drier summers (where are they) and milder wetter winters.

Well last winter was freezing with snow lasting over a month.

If the forecasters can't get it right they should shut up instead of building up people's hopes.

Some people even decide to spend their holidays in the UK instead of going abroad.

What do they get for their holidays a complete cold washout.

firstly, it wasnt the met office that predicted a bbq summer this year...it was the media. ignore anything the media says, its probabally bollox...even if they quote the met office, its usually taken out of context.

secondly, it depends upon your location... last year the far south east DID get a bbq summer, and a larger area of the southeast this year has enjoyed a much better, drier, warmer summer then the rest of the country.

i watch the forecasts daily, i have too as it directly effects my work/leisure time. this last week they have been spot on... getting rainfall predictions, temps, wind speed/direction correct.

i think its a popular misconception that 'they always get it wrong', in reality, the short term forecasts are very accurate, if you listen and understand what they are telling you. ignore any long term prediction form anyone.... no one can predict more then a week ahead with any accuracy or reason, its merely a guess, sometimes they will be right, other times they wont.

long range forecasting is coming on though, the global atmosphere is an ever changing entity, and is highly complicated. reading these 'teleconnections' is the key to getting the gist of the likely synoptic pattern right. there are one or two on netweather who are pretty good at interpreting the teleconnections out to a few weeks ahead. member 'glacier point' predicted that the azores high will remain out to our west and a trough would develop over northern europe.... unfortunately he has been proven right, which is why we have had a much cooler cloudier spell for the last month or so.

unfortunately theres no sign of the current pattern breaking.. the winds are most likely to remain the the northwestern quadrant, even though there might be a pressure rise later this week with some nicer weather... this isnt currently expected to last.

It's impossible to forecast the weather with 100% accuracy as it's pure guess work. The met office are looking at the weather systems, where they have been in the past xhrs and in what way/direction they are moving and what speed to predict where they will be in z hours time.

Your post shows that you are highly ignorant and quite clearly don't have a f***ing clue what you are talking about.

Been a lovely summer down here in the SE tbh, lost count of the number of evenings spent sat outside and in general rarely had any days under the early 20's

Been a BBQ summer here

Most meteorological sites (both American and European) are predicting another cold winter for Europe. El Niño was to blame last winter, this coming winter it will be because of La Niña. Autumn will be milder than usual, but after that it's pretty much cold until March. Obviously this is all subject to change, but previous La Niña systems in the Pacific have given Europe a hard time in the Winter...

Another thread from one of the most parochially minded people on the site...do spare us your posts and shut up, or at least do some research before spouting your crap.

The MEDIA predicts these things by taking and twisting 'best case scenario' predictions, and in any case it HAS been a barbeque summer in the south east. Ridiculously so, in fact.

the uk weather is hard to predict as its influenced by so many factors which can change the weather really quickly!

You're really lucky then.

In NW England (apart from 2 weeks in June) it's been cold wet and windy. In fact since the end of June we've not had 2 days together where it hasn't rained and it's never been above 19C - 66F

So much so that our lawn is like jungle with not being able to mow it.

Some days it's blown a gale

Temperatures in the low 60s - right now noon on Wednesday it's 15C 59F degrees and raining.

So hardly a summer.

Apparently it's been a bad day down SE and London. Heaven rain, thunderstorms temp around 20C (68F)

This is just how it's been in NW England since those 2 weeks in June. Your temp today is the max it's been here since then.

In fact today we are having heavy showers, strong wind, and temp is only 13C (55F).

Hardly summer

Get over it. I live in Scotland if the temperature has hit double figures its a good day. I live in Scotlands sunniest city, and we've had $h!t all this month.

Today is like 22 and clear skies. The best day we've had since June.

We live in a $h!tty country that has $h!tty weather. You'd think by now you'd be used to it. There is um, er, NO POINT in moaning constantly about our poor summer as there is $h!t all you can do about it. You want a nice summer? Emigrate. It's what i'm doing.

Do you just ignore what people say?

It sort of is summer as this is what english summers are like more often than not.

This is rather ignorant to say the least. Weather forecasters do a much better job than credited for - and more often than not, they get it RIGHT. It's just a shame the focus is always put on them when they're wrong. Very typical of Britain as a whole to criticise when something goes wrong - but rarely when things go to plan. But, weather isn't exactly something you'd expect to be applauded - more just taken for granted, which is acceptable really.

Like pointed out, the media is behind this more than anything - there have been some hot days (we've got sun over here today, it's quite a nice day) - but presumably what has been described as a great summer, has been blown out of proportion by the media to be a barbecue summer. By now, surely you must know of the exaggeration from the media?

Summer started off rather well though, in early June - there were some stellar days, it just seems to have gone downhill since!

I check my mates dads weather website, who brought his own mini weather station & has set up a website for the weather for the town I live in. 100% accurate. So I don't complain.

To be fair, the summer has not been bad! Certainly May and June were pretty good months, and that's better than we've had the past few years.

I also agree you won't have your hopes raised as long as you ignore the tabloid media, who love nothing more than getting excited about hot weather so they have an excuse to print photos of girls in bikinis on Blackpool beach.
