The Flashback Charts in August 1979: Charts compiled by Record Business Magazine

The Top TV back then

01 SEASIDE SPECIAL 15.80...the entertainment show, coming from Normandy with Rod Hull & Emu, the Gibson Brothers, Plastic Bertrand, Eruption, & The Loonies

02 DES O'CONNER TONIGHT 14.60...Monday at 8.10pm for Des & a host of guests

03 TO CATCH A THIEF 14.50...Cary Grant & Grace Kelly star in the Hitchcock film

05 IT AIN'T HALF HOT MUM 13.80...jungle comedy with Windsor Davies as BSM Willams

06 HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME 12.50...Victor Hugo's book was back in the shops in 1979 & the BBC showed a film version

07 RETURN TO PARADISE 12.20...Gary Cooper stars in the 1953 film as Mr Morgan washes up on a South Pacific island

08 STAR TREK 12.00...a re-run of the series on Wednesdays on BBC1

09 GOLDEN FIDDLE AWARDS 11.90...the annual awards for musicians

10 JUKE BOX JURY 11.80...Noel Edmonds hosts this terrible re-hashed version of the 1959-65 hit & miss music show

11 NINE O'CLOCK NEWS MON 11.40

12 CORONATION STREET MON 11.40...Gail & Brian plan their wedding before the show goes on strike & Mavis Reilly has a new boyfriend (who mysteriously disappears from the show, after the ITV strike ends in November)

13 NINE O'CLOCK NEWS TUES 11.40

14 NINE O'CLOCK NEWS WEDS 10.80

15 NINE O'CLOCK NEWS 10.70

16 TOP OF THE POPS 10.50...the return of the pop show, following a BBC Musicians Union strike

17 CITIZEN SMITH 10.50...Robert Lyndsey stars in the sitcom as Wolfie Smith in series 3 (wonder why Gold TV never show the 4th series?)

18 ONEDIN LINE 10.00...Peter Gilmore as James Onedin in the Liverpool ancient drama serie on Sundays at 7.15pm

19 CROSSROADS MON 9.90...that Motel and the wobbly sets

20 HOLLYWOOD GREATS 9.80...Barry Norman narrates the tales of famous Hollywood stars. This week: The Marx Brothers

A lack of ITV programmes in there, because a big strike hit ITV Screens & after every channel was in dispute no further programmes were screen by ITV until November 1979. So, BBC1 had enormous figures throughout.

Good to see Iron Maiden at #1 on the albums chart!

And thanks for the 1979 charts! I remember ITV being on strike (and The Times newspaper too!), the ITV strike helped Doctor Who get its all time best viewing figures when the new series returned a few weeks later...

Thanks Dave

AMAZING to see Hurts top 5 on pre-orders. Do you think they could go top 20 officially?

Don't forget Jason Scott on Sunday at 4pm http://www.thesuperstation.info for the complete unofficial top 40 & 7pm for the hour of bubblers/new releases. And Retro fans, join Richard Todd et moi on Atlantic Oldies 2NG at 2pm on Sunday for a look back to the BBC Top 40 for August 1967, & the end of the Pirates.

No, Tom I don't. :puke2:

Nice to see the Manic Street Preachers in the Pre-Release chart, what are the chances of debuting at #1 and bricking it the week after.

And I've just finished reading the #2 book by Stieg Larsson, awesome, I recommend this book.

Taio Cruz might be no. 1 on the Pre-Release chart but I suspect Olly Murs will sell more copies the following week and seems like a foregone conclusion 'Please Don't Let Me Go' will be UK #1 in a fortnights time.

Very very slim. Having heard the Manics new track, I personally think the song will be lucky to go low top 10.

based on those pre-orders:

23rd: Taio Cruz- Dynamite

30th: Olly Murs- Please Dont Let Me Go :o (more likely Katy Perry though)

6th: Alexandra Burke- Start Without You

13th: Manic Street Preachers- Its Not War, Just The End of Love :o (could not though as they are mainly a physical act)

either way, the one weekers wont be stopping any time soon

Thanks as always Dave- great at OMG finally leaving the chart, although shocked Train and Shakira are climbing back

and  at Chase and Status- another great number 11 that deserved top 10

I've just started the 2nd "The Girl..." book. I was gonna watch the first movie this week, but then I read that it contains parts of book #2 and that I should read book 2 first so I don't get it spoiled :(

Well, looks like C&S are gonna join the list of #11s that should have gone top 10 :(

I think the new Manics single will do about the same as Morrissey's I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris (#21)

Olly Murs will not go to #1. More likely Katy Perry will. I really do think she will score a chart double.
Olly Murs will not go to #1. More likely Katy Perry will. I really do think she will score a chart double.

Are the single and album being released on the same day?

That'll seriously hinder Teenage Dream (the singles)'s chart success... I think Olly Murs could get it :P

Then again, Olly isn't R1 playlisted :o But I think he can do pretty well anyway, like The Wanted.

Dave Edmunds doing his usual thing though...nicking someone elses song. In this case Elvis Costello. Never a fan of Mr Edmunds, myself. Did Shakin' Stevens take over Dave's job later? Well he always did other people's songs too, & came from Wales as well! :teresa:

Of course Dave produced the Sunsets back in the 60s and was back doing the same for Shaky on his own in the mid 80s. The Sunsets were due to release I Hear You Knockin' but Dave beat them to it. Shaky did a version on his 2007 album Now Listen which also by coincidence featured an Elvis (Costello) cover - Pump It Up!

Iron Maiden No. 1 album!

Might actually listen to the chart show this Sunday if they play a song from the No. 1 album...do they still do that? And what point in the chart rundown do they do the albums?

Also believe Olly Murs could outsell Katy Perry. If Diana Vickers first single was number 1 why not Olly Murs?
Kylie still top 10 in the phyisicals is great, EastEnders is top of the ratings again and Brandon Flowers is the number 1 pre album, so im well happy with all this and thank you for posting.

I love both, but I'd prefer TD at number 1. I think Olly will do it tho :o

I really hope Olly does it. I just find Katy sooo overrated.
