Amazon is selling Born This Way for $0.99 again for a second time this week for a day.

Amazon selling the album for $0.99 is absolutely pathetic, disgraceful, sad. I don't know if GaGa and her label are indeed aware of this as GaGadaily wrote:

but selling an entire album for like 99p is shame. I mean if you want to help some buyers that can't afford money for it, sell it at $5-7. It's like they don't give a $h!t about the time, the work, the people and everything else that's behind this album. Plus, born This Way was already selling big amounts but now everyone will whining that big sales are purely from this Amazon promotion.

But yes, Amazon made the decision to be a loss-leader to market their Cloud thing. So GaGa and her label make just as much money as they ordinarily would. I really don't see why you're complaining. Everybody wins. (Although yes, seeing how much it has been downloaded already, it does make you wonder if the album would have pushed 500k first week without this pricing).

How much does the label sell an album to Amazon, so that Amazon can make profits from those 99p? It's called a loss leader. It's a marketing strategy Amazon is using to promote it's download service where by they sell something at a loss in order to attract customers.

 

Supermarkets do this daily, so much so it makes up the vast majority of their 'special' offers yet nobody complains about that.

 

 

Ever seen a Supermarket selling a big DVD like Harry Potter for £6 when you spend £40 in store? That's a loss leader. The supermarket makes a loss on the DVD but makes up for it through the sales of the items you bought to make up the £40.

 

Other loss leaders include selling an every day item really cheap, nationally advertising it and then hiding it in the back corner of the store so you have to walk past all the other products to find it and in theory filling up your basket/trolly as you go thus the company gains sales. It's all about attracting customers to you and away from your rivals. Tesco have traditionally pwned at this but Morrisons have been utterly wiping the floor with them for the past 3 christmas' as they've used some pretty good marketing tactics to get customers and then keep them.

So basically, it's not about Amazon making a profit directly of Born This Way but off of other items. I don't see how a classic and widely used [to the point where you've probably bought a loss leader today] marketing technique is 'pathetic' that's just ridiculous. It's not about Lady GaGa, it's about Amazon and attracting customers to their new service using the biggest album release of the year. It's fucking genius marketing that'll probably end up in the Harvard Business Review as the basis for a case study which will then be used in marketing courses world wide.

And by selling it for less than $1 she's actually going to make a fucking fortune from this as Amazon will have paid the same price as everyone else for the album, thus she's actually making more money through this promotion.

Never seen this side i guess. So GaGa's label is selling the album as every other company to Amazon, and Amazon sells it in a lower price? Indeed, brilliant strategy but still not the best thing to watch an album in such a low price.
