Black - Wonderful Life.

It sneaked into the chat at number 72 in 1986 before a re-recording made the top 10 the following year.

Kraftwerk - The Model

Released in 1978 the single flopped completely whilst remaining something of an underground hit. The song gained in popularity in 1980 and 1981 and the band were persuaded to allow the track to appear as the B side of their new song Computer Love. However all demand was for The Model despite the band not wanting to promote this track over their newer material. The single became a minor top 40 hit in July 1981 but the single continued to trickle sell throughout the rest of 1981 until both band and label gave up trying to promote the newer song and allowed The Model to be the main promoted side. The single re-entered the charts and climbed to number one in early 1982.

Damian - The Time Warp

a classic case of if at first you don't succeed... then keep releasing the record over and over again until you do. First released in 1986 and then re-released at least once every year until it finally became a hit in 1989.

Charlene - I've Never Been To Me

A massive flop when released in 1976 and then once again in 1977 yet in 1982 it was re-released and made number one.

Michael Jackson - One Day In Your Life

Released to public indifference in 1975 and as a result flopping the song was re-released in 1981 and became a number one.

The Tams - There Ain't Nothing Like Shaggin'

Unfortunate named song that finally became a hit in 1987 after at least two previous releases, one in the 1970s and another in 1985. The song was about a dance called The Shag though the British public were probably buying it for its novelty value. Banned by the BBC and the record title wasn't even read out by Bruno on the top 40. The follow up, My Baby Sure Can Shag, another oldie with a ludicrous title, flopped completely...

This week Etta James' At Last charts 49 years after its first release (#69)

Her chart debut was also belated: I Just Wanna Make Love to You (#5, 1996).

Both are from the album At Last! (1961)

Huh, how strange.

Appropriate name as well.

Infact, if we can include album tracks, similar things have been happening a few times lately. Like Alejandro charted at #75 in 2009, and went top 10 the following year.

That's not really the same though. Wonderful Life was officially released as a single twice. It flopped first time around before being a hit when a new version was released.

It was the norm for 90's dance tracks to need several releases before taking off...
