Olly Murs getting to #1 on iTunes ahead of Katy Perry seems to have upset a lot of you

So, do you think the X-Factor is ruining the charts?

X factor boosts singles that appear on the show so it is good imo
Yes. I hate the last quarter of the year cos you already know which songs will be #1... Plus the cringeworthy charity and Xmas singles...

I'm not sure, I know that Black Eyed Peas were on the same show as Leona but did anyone really think that they would beat her to the #1 spot a week before?

To be honest, though I'm not a fan of X-factor's hold on the charts at this time of year, the Olly Murs track must be good for it to do well. Look how Leon Jackson fared with his material. X-Factor isn't a free ticket to success and we'll have to see how Joe does. I haven't watched any so far this year, but we're not in the live stages yet so Olly hasn't even had a performance to boost his sales. And last Christmas proved that if we really want to beat X-Factor, we can.

I don't think it ruins the charts. I think it ruins the Christmas chart :( I'd rather they not release it during Christmas period. I mean i'd rather have acts competing for X-mas #1 rather than having a predictable #1 ala X factor winner [bar last year].

And with their charity singles, I know its for a good cause, but If only it wasn't allowed to chart :manson: it stops other songs from getting to #1.

It ruins the christmas chart yes- last year was brilliant, its not fair on other artists

whilst it is frustrating seeing so many throwaway songs in the charts at this time of year and XF finalists really is irritating, I can live with it as long as its a decent song- people in the itunes thread are only whinging and getting personal because Olly is beating Katy Perry and Olly's song is perfectly decent and a welcome chart topper- imo its a lot better than TD, plus X Factors only just started- he hasnt had any help from them on this series and he has got it by his own work- as did JLS, Diana and Alex earlier this year

and I dont think people seem to mind when Alex or Leona releases a song and it goes to number 1- so why is Olly an exception? their songs arent much better than his

Only at Christmas :(

It does help some older songs become more known to younger people though.

Agree with this very much! Well pretty much the whole post  It doesn't mean that the songs will always get #1 but will probably do a bit better than normal it's just promotion, that happens to be on the UK's most popular show, I think it's just a chance to do some artist-bashing really. If Katy Perry/ Rihanna / The Saturdays / any over artist that Buzzjack goes crazy for I'm sure it would be a different situation.

Olly is a man, and this is Buzzjack

I think that we had better to judge an artist and a song without prejudice. I think the Olly Song is a nice pop tune.....not a miracle but well made

You can't use the whole "Buzzjack is anti-male" excuse on everything. -_-

Leona and Alex are far more talented than Olly - and this is coming from someone who doesn't actually mind him but it's the truth. Plus their material is far better than PDLMG imo.

Anyway, I voted that it doesn't ruin the charts although it obviously depends. It really helps some artists that deserve to do well with their releases - Alicia, Beyonce, BEP (although beating Leona was criminal :P), Rihanna etc. Plus it's good for the economical side of the music industry since the weekly sales are even bigger. The thing that XF ruins is the Xmas #1 obviously. I don't want the winner's single getting there every year (maybe the week after if it's good) but I also don't want $h!tty songs getting to #1 that are only selling because of a campaign (which is as bad as the XF).

As Regina said, it's good how older songs are recognised by the younger generation also.

Thats exactly what Im getting at- the people here who think all XF music ruins the charts seem to not have a problem when its a female, and imo thats ridiculous, as whilst they are probably better than the male winners of the show, they are still very much 'X Factor' material

No. A #1 single is a #1 single...

Leon didn't get to #1 with his winners single, despite an X Factor performance. If it's an awful song, even X Factor can't help it that much. The song's that usually get a boost are those that would have been big anyway (BEP's/Take That/Westlife etc...). Janet Jackson and Mariah hardly benefited much from their performance slots. Olly's song is accessible daytime radio pop of the current Train/Mraz ilk so was always going to do big things coupled with his status.

The only thing it 'ruins' is the xmas #1 race - if they released the winners single in the first week of Jan or Feb, a la Pop Idol, I wouldn't have any problem whatsoever with it. But as Rage proved, if there is enough demand to stop the juggernaut, it can clearly happen. It's just a very very powerful promotional tool - I think it helps to dictate the charts, but it doesn't 'ruin' them.

Typical buzzjack, whining and moaning when a male gets to no.1 ahead of a female.

Olly's song isn't bad at all.

It ruins the Xmas no.1 though, and I hope we have another campaign to stop them yet again...

No, X Factor provides a lot of exposure to commercial artists that have nowhere to perform, now that shows like Top Of The Pops and the Pepsi Chart don't exist. I like how it brings back old songs to the chart too, especially when they weren't big hits before and should have been (see Don't Stop Believin'). I do agree it makes the christmas #1 race dull though, but even then there can be upsets like last year...
Yes, the X Factor is the epitomy of everything that is wrong with the music industry.

If X Factor would promote more new music instead of using old tracks that already had their time in the charts (or in the last X Factors) I would not have any problems.

It is though really annoying to see Journey coming back again and again and again. Also Leona and Adele had their times. If only these artists had a new track but they don't :(

Of course if the contestants use some older tracks it's OK. They can't choose a new song, that's clear for me. But they could change their promo/background music. If you know what I mean.

PS: Maybe I'm wrong as I don't watch it, but the first season of X Factor in Hungary is starting this week, so I will follow that. I know though that won't have any influence on the Hungarian music scene

Brister, you could have come up with something a bit more original, every year the same old question and the same old answers can be read ...
