Posted October 22, 201014 yr Only two songs this year have had as long as 3 weeks at #1, and you have to go back almost 2 years to Lily Allen - The Fear to find a 4-weeker. IMO this is because there have been so few songs with cross-genre appeal. Artists seem to have been concentrating on appealing to a guaranteed, but narrow, fanbase, rather than trying to widen their appeal.
October 22, 201014 yr I think its been because record companies have delayed releasing songs or increased the length between when songs go into airplay so people go and download in the first week cos they know the release date. I think once a song is on the radio/TV it should be available to download. The chart would be much more interesting.
October 22, 201014 yr Ireland has much more than The U.k So far this year it's beeen like this: Owl City-Fireflies - 2 weeks Jedward - 2 weeks Lady Gaga Telephone - 4 Weeks Usher omg - 2 weeks Edward Maya - 4 weeks(no idea how this done so well in Ire and not in Uk) Katy P - Californa Gurls - 4 weeks Emanna - Love the way.. - 2 weeks The script - FTFT - 3 weeks Bruno Mars - 3 weeks (so faar) See?

I'm pretty sure if songs were made available straight away, the following would not have reached #1 and instead have stalled lower down where they should have got: Jason Derulo - In My Head Diana Vickers - Once Roll Deep - Good Times Dizzee Rascal - Dirtee Disco David Guetta - Gettin' Over You Ne-Yo - Beautiful Monster Roll Deep - Green Light Alexandra Burke - Start Without You etc. Of course there's no guarantee that these wouldn't have just been replaced with different songs rather than "holdovers" and therefore we would have still had a high turnover at #1... but I don't think it's a coincidence that it was only in the mid-1990s that the amount of #1s significantly increased (when songs started being held back to build up airplay); and in 2007 and 2008, when record companies were still adapting to the changes and many songs had to climb their way up/were released earlier when their airplay/buzz was low, we saw only 17 and 20 #1s respectively. ;) I think it's clear this is the big thing responsible - though the high level of urban #1s (which as vidcapper said, don't seem to have much wide appeal) may be a smaller contributing factor too. October 22, 201014 yr who wants songs hogging the charts its nice having different artists scoring number 1s
October 22, 201014 yr I think its lack of new music, nothing really strikes out as a big hit this year apart from Owl City which could had a longer run at the top. I do prefer acts to stay longer at #1 as I hate the weekly turnover.
October 22, 201014 yr who wants songs hogging the charts its nice having different artists scoring number 1s Yeah, it's nice until they turn into Westlife or McFly with god knows how many #1s that nobody can even name, let alone remember how it goes. ^ That's JLS in a few years time
October 22, 201014 yr who wants songs hogging the charts its nice having different artists scoring number 1s Having a new number one every week devalues the concept of a number one. Plus, you end up with very forgettable and average songs getting undeserved acclaim.
October 22, 201014 yr Author who wants songs hogging the charts its nice having different artists scoring number 1s Since I haven't liked most of 2010's #1's, I don't mind that there has been a fast turnover of them. :P

Agreed and judging from superbossanova's list, we've already had a fair few non no. 1 hits this year. I'll always consider 2008 to be one of the best years for UK no. 1 singles. The reason being those that got to no. 1 spent a good few weeks therefore, imo, were worthy of their status. It's not even like after 4 weeks at no. 1 they suddenly plummeted never to be seen again - they dropped at a fairly slow rate. One could argue the charts overall in 2008 were painfully slow (which to an extent they were). I wouldn't have minded the UK charts in 2008 to be like this year but from #2 downwards. 2010 would've been a great year for the charts had we still had the same level of speed with the turnover of UK #1 singles similar to 2008 so the genuinely popular tracks got to no. 1 and managed more than 1/2 weeks. Jedward aside, Ireland has had a better run of no. 1 singles this year imo.
October 22, 201014 yr I hate songs getting to number one that don't actually deserve it  Our chart should, like the Billboard chart, include airplay to stop X Factor winner singles, (X Factor) charity songs and campaigns (RATM, etc.) from being number one and make the chart give a better reflection of what is popular. And why is the UK still behind of everyone in release dates, the best selling songs this year are the ones that were released early (Love the way you lie, Fireflies, Rude boy, Airplanes, OMG, We no speak americano) Katy Perry was really lucky to sell a lot as we had to wait a bit for CG. It's better to sell a lot than be number one. I'm sure Eminem doesn't care about being beat to the top spot 3 times!!
October 22, 201014 yr Every year is different though - look at 2001 (I think that was the year anyway) - loads of 1 week number 1's. Last year we had quite a number of 2 - 3 weekers. This year we've had a load of 1 week number 1's with high first week sales dropping away. I'm pretty certain next year will be a different kettle of fish once again

It first stalled behind Yolanda Be Cool, then it was #4 for 2 weeks, then it returned to #2 for a further three weeks stuck behind Flo Rida, then Roll Deep, then Taio Cruz.

I'm pretty certain next year will be a different kettle of fish once again You mean 2000, I presume. :P And you're right that things did slow down a lot after that year of horror (though I didn't mind the constant #1 turnover at the time - but then I was only 9!) although there were still a considerable amount of #1s in the years after that - bar 2003 which was quite low if I recall (barely above 20, off the top of my head). But if we're going by patterns... then 2010 is more like 1999 (35 #1s) - hopefully that doesn't mean 2011 is gonna be even worse.
October 22, 201014 yr We've had a few songs which climed to #1 though this year. Off the top of my head, we've had Fireflies, Club Can't Handle Me, Gettin' Over You, We No Speak Americano, OMG, Telephone, Bad Romance, Airplanes, and Just the Way You Are. There might be a couple which I've forgotten about too. And then, there's Eminem's track, which has become one of the most consistent-selling songs of ALL-TIME. I believe it almost broke the record for the most consecutive weeks of selling over 50,000. And, for the record, I like having lots of 1-week #1s. There's been loads of songs that I love this year, so I'm happy that so many of them have had the chance to hold the title of UK #1. And remember, it was only a few years ago when we had a couple of songs spend over 2 months at #1. This has happened in a few other countries this year too. I'm glad we don't do things like Billboard to be honest. I LOVE the Black Eyed Peas, but I wouldn't fancy having them at #1 for literally half the year (26 weeks, I think it was). October 22, 201014 yr I know songs that get to number 1 for just a week every week does get a tad irritating, it does also get boring having the same number 1 for weeks and weeks (precisely why I found 2007 unbelievably boring) tbh, theres been some one weekers who have sold very well- but they are kept off by something that catches the public interest, yet then falls away very quickly after the hype dies, but this here today gone tomorrow interest prevents songs from having a genuinely deserved run at number 1 the exception this year has been Owl City- who lasted a well deserved three weeks and kept off Jedward, who were an exact example of a pure 'atm' act and their chart run shows thise heres the number of weeks top 40 for each number 1 this year (not counting Lady Gaga, as a lot of hers were from last year: Iyaz- Replay- 14 weeks Owl City- Fireflies- 19 weeks Helping Haiti- Everybody Hurts- 4 weeks Jason Derulo- 12 weeks Tinie Tempah- Pass Out- 19 weeks Lady Gaga/Beyonce- Telephone- 21 weeks Scouting For Girls- This Ain't A Love Song- 10 weeks Usher/Will.i.am- OMG- 22 weeks Diana Vickers- Once- 5 weeks Roll Deep- Good Times- 8 weeks B.o.B/Bruno Mars- Nothing On You- 12 weeks Dizzee Rascal- Dirtee Disco- 5 weeks David Guetta/Fergie/Chris Willis/LMFAO - Getting Over You- 14 weeks Shout For England - Shout- 5 weeks Katy Perry/Snoop Dogg- California Gurls- 16 weeks JLS- The Club Is Alive- 7 weeks B.o.B/Hayley Williams- Airplanes- 20 weeks so far (and should get definitely overtake Usher's total soon) Yolanda Be Cool/D-Cup- We No Speak Americano- 15 weeks so far (it should get one more this week) The Wanted- All Time Low- 12 weeks so far (should get one or two more) Ne-Yo- Beautiful Monster- 9 weeks Flo Rida/David Guetta- Club Can't Handle Me- 12 weeks so far (should get one more this week) Roll Deep- Green Light- 8 weeks Olly Murs- Please Don't Let Me Go- 7 weeks so far (1 or 2 more) Alexandra Burke- Start Without You- 6 weeks so far (1 more this week then out) Dynamite, Just The Way You Are, Written In The Stars and f*** You are all still in the upper reaches and should not be going anywhere yet so excluding the charity songs which were understandable, thats 5 songs that got there on merits that have spent less than ten weeks and 7 when Olly and Alexandra get added- these get there on hype and then quickly die away due to not appealing to a wide audience- and these prevent the songs which do, from getting the second or third week they deserve- which isnt great
October 22, 201014 yr I dont want to go back to singles clogging up the no.1 spot for 4 months like Bryan Adams and Wet Wet Wet did or even 10 weeks like rihanna  Edited October 22, 201014 yr by fiesta
October 22, 201014 yr Chart runs of #1s prior to reaching #1 this year; Bad Romance 14-10-11-8-5-3-1-3-3- Fireflies 50-2- Telephone 30-41-62-82-74-67-55-48-49-42-39-39-34-37-31-12- OMG 13-8-2- Gettin' Over You 86-(out for 41 weeks)-41- Airplanes 23-27-25-12-2-3- We No Speak Americano 5-2- Club Can't Handle Me 5-2- Just The Way You Are (second run) 1-2-4-2- All the others were NE-1-
October 22, 201014 yr thats interesting! so its clearly the ones that are 'slow-burners' that ultimately do the best- well for this year anyway the only ones that have gone straight in at number 1 and still have had a very good run so far would be California Gurls, Replay and In My Head Edited October 22, 201014 yr by chart wizard
October 22, 201014 yr thats interesting! so its clearly the ones that are 'slow-burners' that ultimately do the best- well for this year anyway Indeed - barring GOY all of those songs were huge sellers (well, JTWYA isn't quite a huge seller yet but it'll definitely become one) and the only reason GOY didn't début at #1 was because the original version sold enough to get 2 weeks in the top 100 prior to the release of the remix. Notable avoiders of low sales when débuting at #1 are Pass Out, California Gurls, Dynamite, Just The Way You Are... that's pretty much it actually. Maybe F You and Written In The Stars will go on to sell huge amounts as well. I suppose you could also count Replay but this sold close to a fifth of its total sales in its first week. Excludes Everybody Hurts obviously. It has relatively huge sales after débuting at #1 but it's a charity single so that's to be expected, and it feel out of the chart very quickly (again, to be expected).
