Like the Labour party itself, I'm not going to completely dismiss IDS's reforms completely - I think there is some potential in them. However, if he wants to prove that he's motivated by a genuine desire for the poor to help themselves, rather than this just being a populist, spiteful attack, I say he should include a provision in his proposals that the long-term unemployed should be able to take a voluntary placement or some form of education instead of searching for paid work, while still being able to claim benefits in full, for atleast a year. That would be far more effective for those who have been out of work for 10 years, rather than just throwing them in at the deep end with a full-time proper job immediately. He's also going to have to get the rest of the Coalition to stop demonising the unemployed - Osborne with his talk of a "lifestyle choice", and junior Work/Pensions minister Chris Grayling with his briefings to tabloids with spun statistics about how many people are "layabouts" - if he's sincere.

But, of course, even if IDS manages both those things, his good intentions are going to be completely undermined by the fact there aren't going to be any jobs to move into, if this Coalition gets its way and axes hundreds of thousands of public-sector jobs.

As you say, there is some merit in these proposals but introducing them at a time when unemployment is expected to rise is going to be difficult.

As for the proposal that some people could lose benefits for up to three years, what are these people supposed to do when they run out of money? Of course, in an ideal world they would take a job if they are offered one. But is Duncan Smith really saying that failure to accept a job means you and your family have to starve or steal?

It's Ian "Dunkin' Donut's" idea though, he's a Tory, you voted for them, remember....? Better suck it up and roll up your sleeves big-boy, cuz you iz gonna be on de Chain Gang..... :P

"Breaking rocks in the hot sun/I fought the law/And the/Law won"

By the way, I've not done a U-turn on my opinion of this, I just find the sheer irony of Chris all of a sudden objecting to Tory plans hilarious seeing as how he voted for them, and now all of a sudden it dawns on him that there are personal consequences due to him being one of the "work-shy". Re-arrange these words into a well-known phrase - voting, turkeys, Christmas, for...  :P

Excuse me but I strongly object to being called "work-shy" when I happen to be ill with depression. I consider myself to be disabled in fact. I'd like to bet you any money I won't be on any "chain gang" Scott. I'm not worried at all as I'm fully confident that at my review I'll be put in to the "full support" group which means benefit continues without looking for work. If not I'll win any subsequent appeal.

But there's no surely merit at all in forcing people to do "work" for a few weeks and then just shoving them back into the pile... There may, however be merit in his "Universal Credit" plans, but if he's gonna link it up to HMRC IT system it'll totally fall on its arse in about a week.....

Is someone going to get Prince Edward and a few of the other royal hangers on to get off their arses? I doubt Edward has done four weeks work in his whole life!

Kath

i got my volunteering stink in the BHS shop in paisley BECAUSE of the "work placement" course!!

and i am STILL there after two years .....

i will NOT go on another one, because i don't NEED too .....

Now, now, he WAS in the Marines for at least, errrr, a few days, I think......

While i agree that the work shy should get a kick up the arse, it really should be a mix of education and voluntary work to get them back into the habit of working and helping them develop the skills they need to get employed.

But naturally, the tories counldn't give a f*** how employable you are, they just think you are unempolyed because you are layabout scum. People in former industrial cities like Dundee, Glasgow, Sheffield etc need to be retrained to allow them to get what little jobs there are.

Oh and lets not forget ... he did have a spell as a tea-boy for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Theatre Company. Before of course realising that you actually have to walk to the tap with the kettle!

Useless Tool that he is!

Oh, the pain of all that hard work spent attending galas and meals of honour and cutting ribbons. How we weep for the plight of the overworked royal family!

Can I please beg people. Where possible, when answering Chris's posts - please don't quote him. I've had him on 'ignore' for months now after his 'greedy miners' comment but I can still glimpse them when he's quoted.
