Imagine if TOTP was still going? A typical 2010 episode would include:

* Lady Gaga cavorting around the stage in her mad outfits

* Random old act who've re-entered the chart on downloads returning. So this week, you'd get Shakespear's Sister returning after two decades - either as an old video, or even better, a live performance. The Bluebells did it in 1993 after being split up for years!

* Dance tracks performed live in some quirky fashion. Can you imagine a studio performance of 'We No Speak Americano' or 'Barbra Streisand'? It'd be hilarious.

* Tinie Tempah, Katy B, Swedish House Mafia, Alexis Jordan, Rihanna...

I guess I'm just feeling nostalgic after watching the last ever episode. But it was cancelled at completely the wrong time...yeah singles sales were at their lowest ever (and to be honest, the music circa 2005/6 wasn't that good either, Crazy Frog anyone?) just a couple more years and sales would start going up again. Look what The X Factor does to any song that ever appears in it...with something like TOTP back, we might even get regular 100k+ number 1s again.

It just annoys me, how great it could be and how easily it was cancelled. Bring it back, not on a Sunday afternoon, not against Coronation Street, but a good primetime slot. The Christmas specials aren't the same. :(

surley there is something we can do to get it back.

it surley doesnt cost that much to produce and im sure it would easily get 4m per episode in the right slot

the demand is there!

I do. I miss it so much. To be fair, there's now MTV in most households, and there's the Internet, but I miss it how you went and talked about it with your friends the next day and stuff.

Even if they just did a monthly one, with the biggest hits of the month being performed, that would be awesome.

Channels like 4Music are good, to be fair, but not that many people watch them, so less stars appear on the channel. I really enjoy watching interviews, and live performances and stuff. I'd like to se more things like the Florence/Dizzee collab.

i used to love this until they put it on sundays then i used to always miss it cos i'd be out or just not know what time it was on or some other reason. it'd be so good if they brought it back on a friday at like 7 or 8

Shows like TOTP and CD:UK were a good platform for new music, I really miss these 2 music shows as it was promoting music, but it in the end CD:UK was always showing Pop acts in the end every week, which got annoying. I remember McFly and Busted were on practically every week.

Now with the music channels and the internet, there is no room for them on TV anymore, if they did review TOTP, they probably give it the dead slot on BBC3. A new TOTP Saturday format would be great like a 45 mins show between 5 and 6.

I think they should Top Of The Pops back for the spring/summer season. BBC would defiantly get good ratings. There's hardly anything interesting around that time. I loved how acts like Vanilla came in with their shabby outfits to sing. The whole essence was so organic.

But now Cowell dominates the entertainment sections which are organised and constructed. But what can you do

I thought the Sunday evening slot was a good idea as it could be completely up to date. The biggest problem is that when the show is recorded on a Thursday it may not be certain who is going to be number one. More often than not it is obvious but there are exceptions. They would be occasions when they would have to re-edit the show or prepare more than one version of the programme - and hope they broadcast the right one
IIRC simon cowell tried to buy the rights to TOTP but the BBC refuesed. I dont see why they are holding it back if they have no intention of relaunching it

As much as I loved Top of the Pops, I don't think the time is right at present for it to return at the moment. The charts are too skewed towards RnB/pop, mainly from the US, that appeals to a younger audience (which is how the show became in the awful Andi Peters-produced era), which will alienate fans (and possible bands) of other genres who won't bother tuning in, and I always feel TOTP works better when it reflects all aspects of the pop music scene.

During TOTP's last year when it was on Sunday evenings on BBC TWO I thought the formula was right; a mix of pop and indie, and the brand new chart revealed on TV for the first time instead of a 5-day old chart. And of course, TOTP could give other music genres the boost it needs by a high-profile slot in the mainstream media. You need to look at how being on last year's Christmas TOTP gave Florence and the Machine's "You Got the Love" the second wind to push it into the Top 10.

Having a government that is freezing the BBC's main source of revenue in the licence fee and a regulation who are insisting the BBC offer a distinctive service to other channels doesn't help either.

btw, Another forum I regularly post on has a "Fantasy TOTP" thread where a possible line-up is posted each Sunday evening, here's this week's as an example:

Katy Perry - "Firework" (4)

Tinchy Stryder feat Taio Cruz - "Second Chance" (22)

Nadine Coyle - "Insatiable" (26)

B.O.B - "Magic" (16)

Alexis Jordan - "Happiness" (3)

The Saturdays feat Flo Rida - "Higher" (10)

Rihanna - "Only Girl (In The World)" (1)

Will I Am feat Nicki Minaj - "Check It Out" (11) (video/credits)

Not sure if I can link to the forum as I'm a noob and don't know if it counts as spamming...

Would love TOTP back - it's badly missed. Maybe there could be more focus on the album chart, so artists that don't feature regularly (or at all) in the singles chart but sell big in the albums (i.e. Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, Iron Maiden, etc) would get exposure, and the show would attract fans of these artists as well.
I don't think bringing Top Of The Pops back would be a good idea tbh, the Christmas specials are still pretty horrific if you ask me (crap presenting, crap stage not big enough for production numbers, etc.). I seriously do reckon that a channel like ITV should produce a new weekly saturday night live show, it would be massive!
& not to mention, the performers mimed about 70% of the time on TOTP.
Would love to see TOTP back. Next week's line up would've potentially have seen MyChemicalRomance rocking the studio with Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)! (Plus entries from Pink and Shayne Ward (prefer the Nickleback version meself tho) and the most consistent UK hit makers of the last 8 years- McFly!)
I'd like to see TOTP back, trouble is a good time slot as Strictly and The X Factor take up the whole weekend. Maybe 7.00 BBC One on a Sunday after the chart's finished but then I can't watch The Cube :(
The sensible thing really would be for Cowell to expand the Sunday night X Factor to, say, one and a half/two hours, have more artists on and basically fulfill what TOTP did - just not under the format name. He probably wouldn't be able to get the chart element in there (I'm not sure - do the BBC have the licensing rights to it totally?), but even so it'd be a good start.
  • 2 weeks later...
Completely agree, it's such a shame all these missed performances that would have been on TOTP if it were still on.

I really miss it too, I miss all the music shows but this one the most. It was such a family show too, a lot if not all music programmes these days are geared towards teenagers and young adults with 'quirky' presenters. TOTP was for everyone, young kids to the grandparents. My whole family used to watch it.

What is the actual reason for it not coming back? It can't be to do with lack of demand can it? It seems wherever it's mentioned the majority of people really really want it back. Could it be it's too expensive or so?

One of the reasons the BBC frequently give is the lack of a suitable slot in the schedule. However, with full digital roll-out less than two years away, there's no reason why they can't put it on BBC3.

i'd love to have top of the pops and cd:uk back :(

xmas and new years day are not good enough, we need them every week!
