See that Hurts track is a good example of the whole problem with the Hurts - it's trying hard but they just don't have a knack with melody lines - they ache so much to be a classic band and yet they just don't cut it. It's a shame because they mean well - they just need a moment of inspiration - they need to go up about 6 gears and then they'll be onto something.

Hurts are only on their first album though - I agree that their song writing needs to mature, but lyrically it's great, and if Wonderful Life isn't a catchy melody then I don't know what is. Personally I love their sense of style and their uniqueness, and I can't wait for the Christmas single to be released (or to see them for the third time in February :P)

Alexa - Turn My Swag On at #16? wow it's going up alot isn't it? imagine cher sing's it on saturday as her 'song to get you into the final' prob end up top 10 on itunes

COLDPLAY ARE ONE OF THE BEST BANDS IN THE WORLD. SNM. Chris Martin is Brilliant.

Cant believe Christmas Lights is already #7 on iTunes :w00t: So happy!

Is Christmas Lights being used in a Film 4 ad? I swear it is the same song.
When your powering Coldplay just a little bit of information.. chasing cars is by Snow Patrol ;)

So it is.

I mix it up with Viva La Vida for some reason.

How can you mix up VLV (best #1 hit of the noughties decade) with CC (worst song of all time)?

:(

Christmas Lights for Christmas #1

I do believe that position shall be filled by Kylie Minogue - Let It Snow :smoke:

Cc is not the worst song of all time at all, you obviously haven't heard alot of music if you think that.

Boots is down to 28 on my itunes now :(

Thought I'd come in and check the iTunes chart in here, seeing as I can't get my feed to work and now I think I'll leave for another month or five. The last three pages have reminded me why I steer clear of iLoons - the bitching, the sniping, the 'my taste is superior to yours' complex that so many people seem to have.

I'm not a fan of Coldplay either personally but I appreciate that they are skilled songwriters who have released some classic singles. I wouldn't listen to them out of choice though - but it is nice to have original xmas songs about and in the charts. I still maintain that more artists should do them. Acts like Wizzard and Slade would have been just another distant memory of the 70's if not for their xmas timeless songs. We need some new 'xmas classics' and I'd love Take That, or some other current pop bands have a stab at making one.

Would Slade be a 'distant memory' though?

Merry Xmas Everybody was the last of their six number one singles.

With the possible exception of All Saints artists/bands with 5 #1 singles tend not to be forgotten about.

Good to see Coldplay leap up, The Killers haven't really managed to have the same impact but they do release a Christmas single every year now so it's to be expected. "Boots" still should do well hopefully ^_^

Oh, and I have a third new Christmas song to bum madly. Corey Taylor (yes, him of Slipknot and Stone Sour) is releasing one called XMA$ or somehing similar. It's rather, erm, tongue-in-cheek

Ok bad example :P How about Shakin' Stevens. He's a cult icon amongst 18-30's, and almost wholly down to Merry Christmas Everyone and THAT jumper! Sure, he was huge in the 80's but I doubt he'd be massively well remembered now without that song - certainly not with younger people. And look at East 17 - the only song of their's that ever gets airplay anymore is Stay Another Day and normally only in December. If acts write a decent xmas song, they can keep the royalties rolling in for years - seems like common sense to me!

interesting to note glee cast xmas album is only top 40 after the sucess of their last albums and singles - i suppose without the show being on tv the songs just dont sell as well!!

is there any chance of rihanna/eminem staying top 40?

WowColdplay are really making an impression,l top 10 withink 24 hrs of release is great for them, id love it to go number 1 and i hope the killers can do great aswell, both brilliant bands.
It's really hard to see what could be #1 next week. Nothing really screams out. I guess if Black Eyed Peas don't do it then the other option is Willow Smith o_o Unless Nicole or Ellie manage to climb up, which seems unlikely to me, or Coldplay take off in a big way :o

I don't see the Black Eyed Peas song particularly appealing much to the people who watch X Factor (or at least ones who don't have it already). Mind you, it only needs a small % of the audience to download it and it'll be #1, so the odds of it finding that small % are pretty high :( Boo.

its the same situation to last year when nothing comes out around this time as people await the xfactor single and hold off until the new year.remember when lady gaga hit no1 again with bad romance!!
