When was the last time the Lib Dems lost their deposit (got below 5%)? It didn't happen in a single constituency at the last election...

Even accounting for the poor turnout, the UKIP vote was up about 1250 - has Europe become an issue?

I'd say immigration more than Europe... and I think it's because the Lib Dems have, in the past, often picked up a lot of votes from anti-immigration people in urban northern constituencies (somewhat counter-intuitively, considering they're the most pro-immigration party of them all - but people have just used them as a "none-of-the-above" protest vote) - so, now that the Lib Dems are no longer going to pick up those types of protest votes, I think it was inevitable that either UKIP or the BNP would rise over the next few years...

What a disaster for the Lib-Dems. Sixth and behind even the BNP and an Independant.

Yes, but I think Suedehead and Danny have accounted for the results already. Labour could have put a sheep up for this by-election and it would have won. But it is a worrying message for Lib Dems. Either core support did stay at home or it has gone altogether.

The referendum can't come soon enough. Once that's done I think we might see some splits and I can't really wait for that now. If half the Lib Dem MPs are prepared to split from the coalition then the majority will be lost and they can start to have a proper influence in Parliamentary votes. Right now there doesn't seem to be any give in Tory policies at all (otherwise how bad could they be?) and it's just destroying what was a progressive party in the Lib Dems.

As for UKIP and BNP 'success' - well, that's mainly down to local businesses cutting costs by hiring foreign, cheaper workers or simple, local racism.

Apparerently, Nick CLOT is being all "defiant" about it.... I mean, WTF???? Sorry, but this isn't just being defeated, this is the political equivalent of having your head held down a toilet and it getting flushed after being shat and pished all over....... YOUR MAN LOST HIS DEPOSIT YOU ARROGANT PRICK.....

Personally, I would be asking myself some serious questions about how the public is actually perceiving me and my party... But then, I guess I'm not an arrogant tosser with his head up his arse, who's totally lost all semblance of reality....... A bit of SOUL-SEARCHING, Mr Clegg, and less "defiance" might be appropriate now....

"A party spokesman said: 'We're very embarrassed that we came behind a fringe party that everybody hates .... but I'm sure we'll beat the Lib Dems next time,' the Monster Raving Loony Party's leader 'Howling Laud' Hope quickly added."

There's going to be a by-election in Leicester South, as the Labour MP there, Peter Soulsby, is stepping down. It's expected to be held on 5th May (the day of local/Scottish/Welsh elections and the AV referendum). It's a fairly safe Labour seat, although the Lib Dems did briefly take it in a by-election in 2004 (before losing it the following year to Labour in the general election).
Leicester S went Tory in 1983 (by seven votes) before Labour won it back in 1987. As there are no dodgy circumstances this time (unless there's something we don't know), Labour should walk it. The previous Lib Dem MP stood again last year so it will be interesting to see if he stands in the byelection.

Doesn't look like it... the MP is stepping down to run for Mayor of Leicester.

I refuse to click on a link to the Daily Wail. Whatever he said is bound to have been distorted by that dreadful rag.

It was an opinion piece written by him though. And he defended it earlier today:

I have to admit the arrogance and delusion that "we're not wrong, the electorate are wrong" is really something - not to mention his assertion that he got thrashed because Barnsley people were racist and homophobic (is he even an immigrant and/or gay? If not, I don't even vaguely understand the point he's making) rather than people hating what his party are doing.

I notice that video was uploaded to YouTube by a member of the English Defense League.

I noticed that after I posted it too  But unfortunately no-one else had uploaded it.

Doesn't mean to say that the bloke didn't say these things though does it...? Doesn't alter the fact either that the Carman is a pathetic tosser with extremely sour grapes.... I mean, if this is how he feels about the people he's supposed to be "representing", I think he needs to take a long, hard look at why he got into politics....
