Perhaps Daniel's definition of "Americanised" is different from other members'. I would say that it was Americanised if it could only have been made by an American broadcaster. So, I would say that this episode wasn't Americanised. It was just set in the USA and had American funding. If that meant having American actors playing some of the American characters then so be it. It was still very much a Dr Who programme and, therefore, quintessentially British.
It's 1 - set in America, 2 - has lots of American people and 3 - at the end of the episode (credits) it said BBC America and of course BBC Wales

Series 5 Episode 6 was set in Italy. Does that make it Italianised?

I enjoyed the episode a lot more than I thought I would! I've always been a Doctor Who fan, but this season seriously seems to have stepped up from the previous ones. Very excited for next weeks episode! ^_^

I'm guessing the new Torchwood is going to be slightly Americanised

I have to say

the Silents voice creeps me out and it takes a lot for that to happen! They even appeared in a nightmare last night! THe power of Who!

The Doctor died. Isn't that about it... TO be honest all these deaths recently are just making them less powerful. Rory, and Amy have already 'died' lol. As has River but her timeline is in reverse.

Yeah I know, it's like "Oh hey Amy just died. Never mind the doctor will reverse time and space to save her" :P

I wonder if the "Impossible Planet" and "Impossible Atronaut" is just a coincidence? With that writing on Amy and Rory's faces it seems like it could be more than that. Interesting....we never did find out what the writing meant.

Also I'd assume this latest episode would have to be somewhat "americanised" since it was set in America. There's no point doing America and it seems like London is there? I think there's probably two different meanings of americanised floating about here...

The only downside is

Amy's pregnancy meaning she'll be leaving at the end of the series, which isn't that good because I love her and the dynamic they all have now

.

Aren't you assuming that her pregnancy has a happy ending? Or that it's even a proper pregnancy at all? Remember her last pregnancy? Yeah it was non existent...

Just saying anything could happen, especially when doctor who writers have their way.

Not really getting the scariness of the silence, they look funny when they open their mouths. They are cool though, one of the best aliens I've seen on Doctor Who. :) Interested in finding out what they're all about.

Just watched the episode and thought it was okay, it was really just one long scene setter though and I don't feel like I know any more than I managed to grasp from the trailer!

I was slightly disappointed by the aliens too, I love the idea of you forgetting them once you turn away but ultimately I found them distinctly less scary than I thought I was going to. Hopefully the second part will flesh the story out a bit and they will be used to better effect. I think part of the problem is that it feels as though they're playing second fiddle to the Doctor story when clearly they seem to be a good enough idea to stand up on their own as the main focus of an episode.

Also, wasn't that the ship in the underground tunnels the same one from the James Corden episode in the last series? If so, it may have something to do with the ship being able to project a strong perception filter? Astronaut wise, I think it may just be as straightforward as it being River but I'm not convinced we'll find out for sure in the next episode, suspect we'll still be left with as many unanswered questions as there are now.

Oh I had thought about that after I posted, there are so many possibilities. I love this, I love when a show leaves you contemplating so many different potential outcomes.

I think the silents are pretty scary too, at least for younger audiences, their mouths are fairly ominous though. I like it when they bring in new aliens that they have actually put some thought into, there's nothing worse than a half assed new alien race.

Wow, I am totally amazed by how good the opener was. For me, River made the episode. I literally love the character and wish she could be a series regular. Such an amazing actress and I loved her in ER.

Her line about being a screamer :kink: For me Rory should die, I feel he is disposable and he is kinda annoying however the whole group dynamic worked brilliantly. I was not expecting Amys revelation at the end! I really hope that does not mean she will have to leave the show at some point. I love the darker and more adult route the show is taking. Previous series, mainly the ones with David Tennant felt extrememly childish but Matt Smith has brought an amazing new side to the Doctor. I hope he stays.

I just wanted to point out that apparently only a little bit of the episode was actually filmed in America, the Nixon bit for instance was filmed in Cardiff.

Like someone else had said, who knows if it's going to be a happy ending? Last night on Doctor Who Confidential, Steven Moffat said

the pregnancy storyline will be a main plot throughout the series.

I didn't watch Confidential, but yeah the more I think about, the less I think my initial idea is correct.
Also with the two impossible episodes, i thought The Silence monsters looked similar to the Ood and perhaps they are both related.

6.5m viewing figures, peaked at 7m, 36.7% audience share.

DOwn figureswise from last season opener, but hey it was sunny and it had the WORST lead in EVER! And I thought SIng If You Can was BAD! BBC went EVEN lower!

It's a shame that the viewing figures were so low, as it was possibly one of the best episodes of the recent series. Hopefully they'll increase as the series continues.

I think once the HD figures and recordings are added in for BARB, it'll be a bit over 8M - I hope so anyway, it's a shame that it had to fall on a sunny evening, with an early showing too!

I think the weather played a big part in that- plus surely the fact its a cliffhanger (and it won't be as hot according to forecasters) will pull in more next week

yes my god Don't Scare The Hare was terrible.
The viewing figures were always going to be so low putting it on so stupidly early. It doesn't mean anything.
I think those figures are pretty impressive really, given the weather and the $h!t lead in and the poor time slot.
