I said nothing of the sort!

My problem with current T40 music, is that ISTM there's virtually nothing that appeals to anyone who isn't a teenager (i.e. my age range). The main exception is Ellie G - YS, and possibly Matt Cardle (though he's only there thanks to XF).

Radio 1 needs to remember that not *everyone* loves urban.

What kind of music do you like/listen to?

And what's R1's target audience? Teenagers and young adults, and what do teens like? urban, rnb, pop and dance. Plus R1 play lots of alternative

That's why we have Radio 2! ;)

So single-minded and one-dimensional... :manson:

Just found out a very geeky thing but hey-ho, I'm going to say it! I just noticed that on the chart on my iPod Touch, I was looking at the different categories, and I discovered something very rare! There are more song's in the Top 100 that are Alternative (13) than Hip Hop (12) :o very shocked to see this and I bet it rarely happens considering the chart these days.

Just thought I would mention it, I have an inkling why and that's because of this week's Radio 1's Takeover idea! There are more alternative songs in the Top 300 than there usually are

To be fair, the categories they use on iTunes are stupid. Some artists have different genres in one album, but all the album versions of a song will be given the same genre as the album is given overall. For example, Loud has been given the genre "R&B/Soul", which works fine for What's My Name?, because it's an RnB song, but Only Girl and S&M aren't RnB or Soul at all. They're pop songs with strong European and dance influences, and indeed, the single version has, correctly been categorized as pop by iTunes, but the album version is categorized as "R&B/Soul", because all the tracks from the album need to be given the same genre.

Also, apparently Written in the Stars, Jungle, She Said and Miami 2 Ibiza are pop songs. And Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz is a rock song, apparently...

Not only does iTunes get the genres down-right wrong in a lot of cases, but they also can only assign one or two genres to each track, so a song like American Boy by Estelle, may have strong pop, RnB, hip hop and dance influences, but they can't show all that in the genre they assign it (and, oddly, enough, the version in the top 1000 is listed as "R&B/Soul"...).

I agree about Radio 1, why do they just play the following Urban rubbish?

If you don't like urban then don't listen to Radio 1! But there's lots of people who love it which is why it reflects massively in the charts, possibly why Katy B and Jessie J are so high (without R1 they would both be outside the top 40)

iTunes also think James Blake 'Limit to Your Love' is a dance song, get your facts right iTunes!

edit: "Just The Way You Are" is a pop song? It's R&B/Soul!!!

It is a dance song - it's 'minimal techno' which is a form of techno which is a form of dance. Dance is probably the most accurate description.

You don't necessarily need to be able to dance to a dance song.

lol. Although, in that case, looking at the list of genres on iTunes, the only other one that could fit (which is the one I would've chosen) for that song is electronic, and I would've chosen dance if they didn't have electronic, is it's certainly not RnB, pop, rock, dance, hip hop, etc.

This. Although I think electronica would fit better, calling it a dance song isn't the most outrageous thing on the iTunes feed.

If you listen to the bit that starts at 0:50 (which is awesome, by the way), I agree that it has to be electronic or dance.

I would say it's alternative/dance.

I would say it's alternative/dance.

Perhaps, but on iTunes you only have this list to choose from. I think iTunes need to change the way they classify songs by genres.

Alternative

Alternative Rap

Children's Music

Classical

Comedy

Country

Dance

Electronic

Fitness & Workout

Hard Rock

Hip-Hop/Rap

Indie Rock

Jazz

Latino

Pop

Pop Latino

Pop/Rock

R&B/Soul

They should have something more like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_popular_music_genres

Then you could search for genres better. So Limit To Your Love would be listed under Electronic, and within Electronic, it could be listed under Techno, Dubstep and Dance, or something (depending on how liberal you want to be).

Think he was being sarcastic :P.

Vidcapper really is a broken record.

I just change the song's given itunes genre after i've bought it to what ever i feel fits the song best

Really looking forward to seeing the chart battle in a couple of weeks time between Grenade/Rolling in the Deep/We R Who We R could be a close call depending how much Bruno sells this week coming (and if he even gets to number 1 in the first place) Rolling in the Deep

I'm looking forward to it too! :D Also Wretch 32 & Aggro Santos are released that week which both could go top 5/10. I want all three of them to be #1!

Traktor has really grown on me! It's a bit like a british grime version of 'On to the Next One' - Jay Z & Swizz Beats :) Would laugh if Kimberly got a better peak (with Aggro) than Nadine did but i can't see it taking off maybe low top 40?

Aggro Santos will FLOP, no support from R1 and Aggro has gone with a Girl Aloud which isn't CC. I don't even like the song. It will get top 20 but this is only because of his appearance on IAC:GMOOH

That's why we have Radio 2! ;)

Best radio station ever!

Best radio station ever!

Of course R2 is by far the best and hopefully this year it will have double the listener audience of R1.

Grenade will be No 1 of course but hope there is a slim chance that Adele can hit the Top spot as well.

Someone here actually knows that song! :o :D When I first heard it, I didn't like it because I found the instrumental really, really weird, but I love now, that I've got used to it. :D So catchy! And you can't hate a song that uses the word "cojonas"!

I hope Traktor is big.

And I don't really like Radio 2. Radio 1Xtra all the way!
