December 28, 201014 yr Author #164 BEYONCÉ “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” from the album “I Am… Sasha Fierce” [November 2008] -71-83-85-80-60-45-64-70-61-72-82-69-79-95-88-75-84-95-x(4)-84-83-90-95-x FyHVQT8aIBM ~ 512 points // 22 weeks // #45 peak ~ Another ‘ever-present’ in the top 200 on this countdown is this, the second single from the album I Am… Sasha Fierce by US singer Beyoncé (full name Beyoncé Knowles). This annoyingly catchy (or just annoying depending on who you ask) song originated as just the B-Side to the #1 first single from the aforementioned album, 2008’s If I Were A Boy, but became so popular in its own right that they released it as the second single. It was certainly not a bad move. The song only peaked at a relatively low #7, lower than the next two singles (#4 Halo and #5 Sweet Dreams, both 2009) but had an enormous chart run to make up for it. I should mention that this song, or more specifically the video, was the subject of indirect controversy when he of the big ego Kanye West (who actually had a featured credit this year on Beyoncé's #60 hit Ego coincidentally) interrupted country singer Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards with, and I quote, “yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of ALL TIME!”, sparking an internet meme and practically ruining Kanye West’s career (in the UK at least). December 28, 201014 yr Author #163 GRAMOPHONEDZIE “Why Don’t You” stand-alone single [March 2010] 12-17-18-26-37-44-60-78-x uT8OEtf5r1U ~ 516 points // 8 weeks // #12 peak ~ Certainly one of the stranger hits of the year. Serbian house DJ Gramophonedzie (real name Marko Miličević) took the 1936 Peggy Lee recording Why Don’t You Do Right?, smashed it up into pieces and re-ordered them over a house beat. He also got rid of the last two words and the question mark from the title. It may sound like just noise to some people and that’s because that’s pretty much what it is, but hey, I like it at least. It’s a bit of a shame it missed out on the top 10 after being #6 in the first midweek chart update as it would help to diversify nationality-wise the mostly British and US love-in list of top 10 hits this year.
December 28, 201014 yr Author #162 GABRIELLA CILMI “On A Mission” from the album “Ten” [March 2010] 9-17-16-23-28-43-68-79-x ycmQpXWwT0c ~ 525 points // 8 weeks // #9 peak ~ It would have been fair to assume Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi would never get another top 10 hit after her massive 2008 #6 hit Sweet About Me, especially when her comeback On A Mission was snubbed by Radio 1 (with the amount of times I’ve said this you’d think Radio 1 doesn’t make a big difference to the chart, but there have just been quite a few examples of defiers this year). But, nonetheless, she did get a flash-in-the-pan-esque #9 hit with this song, much to the delight of many BuzzJackers. It didn’t save the album though, which remained a huge flop, only making #28 and spending only 2 weeks top 100.
December 28, 201014 yr Author What is it with you and putting what the artists' real names are? It's just something I decided to include in the comments :P It's not hurting anyone, is it?
December 28, 201014 yr lol. To be fair, I did agree with Kanye. I thought Beyonce's video was better, but it was really rude to interrupt Taylor Swift's big moment like that. :( I remember that Gramophonedzie song being popular at the same time as Pass Out. I was completely overwhelmed at that time, because there was a sudden bunch of songs I'd never heard of in the charts. And I didn't like On a Mission. I heard it too much on the radio. I preferred Katy On a Mission tbh, which ironically, I barely ever heard on the radio. :kink: Edited December 28, 201014 yr by Eric_Blob
December 28, 201014 yr It's just something I decided to include in the comments :P It's not hurting anyone, is it? On A Mission by Gabriella Cilmi (real name, Gabriella Cilmi) is pretty crap. It's a bit predictable, but it's fine.
December 28, 201014 yr Author #161 NAUGHTY BOY PTS. WILEY FEAT. EMELI SANDÉ “Never Be Your Woman” stand-alone single [March 2010] 8-14-19-25-39-43-61-74-94-x -jiBFV4DSIc ~ 532 points // 9 weeks // #8 peak ~ And here’s another Wiley single for you. Strangely credited to the producer Naughty Boy whose only other hit to date is 2006 #36 Phat Beach (I’ll Be Ready), the song provided Wiley with his second top 10 hit after 2008 #2 Wearing My Rolex. It was also the second top 10 hit for Scottish singer Emeli Sandé (born Adele Sandé), the other also being a featured credit, Chipmunk’s 2009 #6 hit Diamond Rings. The chorus of this song samples Your Woman by White Town, while the verses are your standard Wiley fare. The version played on the radio and TV channels was the Shy FX Radio Edit, though Shy FX doesn’t get an official mention on the crediting.
December 28, 201014 yr Never Be Your Woman is such a tune! :o Wearing My Rolex was even better though.
December 28, 201014 yr Is the version in the video the Shy FX version? Yeah, it is I think. The original version is pretty dull tbh. There was also another popular remix by a DJ called Herve, which I heard a little bit on the radio, but it was nearly always the Shy FX version they played (and I'm glad for it).
December 28, 201014 yr Author #160 JLS “Love You More” from the album “Outta This World” [November 2010] 1-3-10-14-23-19- GAjLo_guTKs ~ 536 points // 6 weeks // #1 peak ~ The second appearance on the countdown for the X Factor boyband. This was the song that arguably made JLS the most successful X Factor contestants to date, at least in terms of #1 singles. Each of the full finalists line-ups from 2008, 2009 and 2010 had a collective #1 single, while winners Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward, Leon Jackson, Joe McElderry and Matt Cardle plus non-winners Chico, Diana Vickers and Olly Murs have each had one. The other 2 winners, Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, have each had 3 #1s, but JLS surpassed even this with Love You More providing them a 4th #1. The single was aided greatly by being the official 2010 BBC Children In Need single. Of course, this doesn’t guarantee a big hit - see McFly who only made #18 with 2008 Children In Need single Do Ya - but it helped. This is a fairly standard ballad as opposed to upbeat Outta This World first single The Club Is Alive, following the same pattern as the releases from JLS (the album). This song was recently promoted by one point due to an OCC error which printed its position a place too low. Edited December 29, 201014 yr by ★ 2011 Bray ★
December 28, 201014 yr Author #159 CHASE & STATUS FEAT. MALI “Let You Go” from the album “No More Idols” [August 2010] 11-14-22-31-44-55-71-72-80-71-99-x wpFfM_dili4 ~ 541 points // 11 weeks // #11 peak ~ This song just missed out on providing a second top 10 hit for British primarily-drum-n-bass-but-also-occasionally-other-genres DJ duo Chase & Status (Saul Milton, Will Kennard). Featuring the Western African country Mali, which apparently is now also a man with a quite scary voice who Google doesn’t throw up any information on, Let You Go was a bit of a disappointment after the amazingness of its predecessor, 2009 #9 hit End Credits (feat. Plan B). The video of the song seems to be a thinly veiled dig at Jeremy Kyle for some reason. That’s alright with me. Edited December 28, 201014 yr by ★ 2011 Bray ★
December 28, 201014 yr Author #158 ROBBIE WILLIAMS “You Know Me” from the album “Reality Killed The Video Star” [November 2009] -9-25-31-39-44-58-68-49-63-86-x(1)-98-x(1)-99-x tyg3RtALnwg ~ 543 points // 12 weeks // #9 peak ~ This was the last hit for British singer Robbie Williams (formally Robert Williams) before he finally gave in and rejoined his old band Take That. He did release one more single from his #2 album Reality Killed The Video Star (blocked from #1 by JLS’ self-titled début), the Sport Relief 2010 single Morning Sun, but it only reached #45. The next Robbie single after that was a collaboration with other Take That member Gary Barlow. This song will be coming later on in the countdown, as will the first single from the fully reformed Take That. You Know Me made #6 (aided by a performance on the X Factor) and showed far more chart longevity than the first single Bodies (#2 in 2009). It did drop very quickly once it was finished with its three week run in the top 10 though. In the video Robbie dresses up as a rabbit. This is all you need to know about the video. December 28, 201014 yr I'm enjoying the countdown, Bray, Neutron Star Collision beaten by Leeds Leeds Leeds was one of my angriest moments of the year
December 28, 201014 yr 2010 had a collective #1 single So Rebecca Ferguson, One Direction & Cher Lloyd have all been to number one? Edit; i know it's a short quote, but it's hard to post properly when on my phone, anyway it comes from the paragraph on love you more, where it said all finalists from 08,09&10 reached the top spot, where only 08 and 09 did Edited December 28, 201014 yr by *xmasG*
December 28, 201014 yr Author #157 GLEE CAST “Halo / Walking On Sunshine” stand-alone single [February 2010] 9-9-25-35-49-55-63-75-75-95-92-80-x ZmQ5hLcxnTY ~ 550 points // 12 weeks // #9 peak ~ Despite an enormous 67 appearances on the longlist, Halo / Walking On Sunshine is actually the lower of just 2 entries in the top 200 for the collective known as Glee Cast. The very nature of Glee songs makes longevity impossible. This one did better than most of the others, presumably because there was some actual work put into it instead of just being a lazy cover like 99% of other Glee songs. This song is of course a mashup of Beyoncé’s Halo and Katrina & The Waves’ Walking On Sunshine, hence the title. Wikipedia reliably informs me it’s performed by ‘New Directions females’, which means nothing to me as I don’t watch Glee. This isn’t particularly offensive to my ears, so I’ll not complain about its presence in the countdown. Anyway, this was the second of three top 10 hits for Glee Cast, the first being the genuinely huge #2 cover of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ which will be later in the countdown, the third being another #9 hit but a more flash-in-the pan one, a cover of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse Of The Heart credited to ‘Glee Cast feat. Jonathan Groff’. Groff gets a featured credit on six other Glee ‘hits’. Edited December 28, 201014 yr by ★ 2011 Bray ★
December 28, 201014 yr Author So Rebecca Ferguson, One Direction & Cher Lloyd have all been to number one? Yes, as part of the entity 'The X Factor Finalists 2010'.
December 28, 201014 yr Yes, as part of the entity 'The X Factor Finalists 2010'. But not as a solo artist, like Olly & JLS. And I don't know how Halo missed the cut for the glee album, anyway I don't like the song or any glee song bar Don't Stop Believing
December 28, 201014 yr Author #156 P!NK “Raise Your Glass” from the album “Greatest Hits… So Far!!!” [November 2010] 13-16-18-20-27-30-30- x4mtDr3gNHw ~ 553 points // 7 weeks // #13 peak ~ Token Greatest Hits singles never tend to do *that* well in the UK, but it was still surprising that this didn’t make the top 10. It was even more surprising when factoring in that it was the third #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for US singer P!nk (real name Alecia Moore) after Lady Marmalade (Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa and P!nk) and So What, and even MORE surprising considering P!nk is generally bigger in the UK - both of those songs also made UK #1, but so did Just Like A Pill. Nonetheless, for its low peak Raise Your Glass has had a fairly consistent chart run so far. Edited December 28, 201014 yr by ★ 2011 Bray ★
