I think it's a very strong contender for a Mercury nomination and a Brits Best British Female nomination has to be a good bet too. She won't win Best British Female (Adele has to be the front-runner at the moment) but it would be good to see her getting more recognition.

It absolutely deserves to get a nod at the Mercurys, I'd quite like to see her have a second victory actually as it's a really strong album.

The album is brilliant but the first 5 tracks are probably the best songs I've heard this century!!! I can't believe how good they are, I get goosebumps every time I listen to them and been crying a couple of times as well. Never thought someone would ever write something as divine as 'The Glorious Land'

Listened to this one a few times, quite like it. PJ doesn't disappoint!

This is just absolutely fukkin' exceptional stuff from a truly gifted artist who's never really had the recognition that her vast, Grand Canyon-sized talent deserves, if anyone deserves a "lifetime achievement" award it's P J, because she not only has her own unique style, she always strives to do something different with each album... Let England Shake is not only a fantastic Alternative/Indie album, it's also a fantastic Folk album too, taking folk music off into a different dimension, and doing things with folk music which are every bit as innovative and ground-breaking as the likes of Bob Dylan and Fairport Convention did...

The term "genius" is often very inaccurately bandied around these days to the extent that it's become an irrelevant phrase, but there really doesn't seem to be any other word that can adequately describe an artist like P J Harvey.....

Is it too early to start chiselling a name in the bit of marble marked "Album of the Year" yet...? Heck, it might not even be considered previous to start planning on chiselling out the one marked "Album of the Decade" tbh.....

4 weeks top 40 and hopefully will get 6 (maybe 7) weeks top 75 - not bad for a low top-ten 'rock/indie/alternative' album. Not bad at all.

I think the first five or six tracks are easily the strongest (sublime). Not as good in the second half but the first half means it averages an 8-9 IMO. I'll give it the 9.

Did anyone see Polly on Later tonight. Let England Shake was good but Words That Maketh Murder was stunning.

Here's Let England Shake and Words That Maketh Murder from Later...

The Words That Maketh Murder really is a fantastic song and that is a fairly flawless performance of it, Peej just gets better and better with every album for me.
she's extraordinary. i couldn't even imagine having that much talent / creativity, so jealous.

OH MY GOD

She and her music are officially the greatest things that has ever happened on Earth.

Let England Shake is by far the best album of 2011: poppy but not pretentious, raw but romantic. Everything on it is in its right place.

I've never been a fan of Polly - se's always been either too rocky, too screechy, too....something.... and I've never really got her. And I found White Chalk just painful.

However..... after reading the reviews for this album I decided to take the plunge (and after seeing her spellbinding performance on Later...)... and I agree - unquestionably my album of the year so far.

The Glorious Land is SUBLIME.... I've had it on repeat in the car for the past week and it gives me goosebumps..... the guitar sounds like Johnny Marr at his blissed-out finest....... and there's echoes of Cocteau Twins, Kate, Siouxsie...... a fabulous combination in anyone's books. My song of the year.

The first half of the album is definitely the winner - it does tail off a little in parts but maybe that's because I've not given the latter half the attention I've given the first half quite yet.... but I can't praise Let England Shake highly enough - it's a masterpiece.

Glad you chose to give it a try :)
