I know, I was exaggerating for comic effect. But if the label hadn't screwed everything up by releasing New In Town as the first single proper than she might have had a shot at nu-Kylie status.

'New In Town' was a perfectly fine single (although THAT video was shocking), I'll never get why 'Earthquake' flopped so epically, I thought that would've been an easy top 15/top 20. I think she deserved La Roux's success, in the same way I wish Marina would've had Florence's.

I do like 'Shake' a lot, but it doesn't strike me as comeback (or even single) material, it's more like the type of song that would be a gem of an album track. I hope she has a killer proper single up her sleeve to follow.

Oh no. This really isn't what the world needs. :( It's ok, lead single material? At from it. :(

Give me New In Town over this ANYDAY. Most of Hands is better than Shake tbf though.

very disappointing, the worst track on 'Hands' pisses all over this one...

this sounds at most like a Gina G reject from 1997...

I have such an odd relationship with this woman, literally and musically. I got my white label 'Stuck on Repeat' 12" signed, she's friendly with my mother, used to bump into her in the corner shop, worked with her boyfriend Jamie etc. I literally followed her through from near inception to major label doom. Her A&R was atrocious. Being allowed to release so many demos, most of which made the final album?! 'New In Town' was a terrible lead single and had an even worse video to boot. One of the worst and most offensive videos of the last few years. I remember a scene which made fun of homeless people no? If she had led with 'Remedy' things would have been very different. 'Earthquake' flopped because the interest had waned after a lackluster launch on the back of OPPRESSIVE hype. Luckily the whole 'Sound of...' FAD has died down but she was the ultimate victim of it.

As for the new music though this is obviously the definition of "buzz". I can't help thinking that she's going to fuck herself over based on the faults of her last era. By that I mean she ASPIRES to be the artist everyone wanted her to be on her first record. "More authentic", "back to roots", "natural electronic, "Stuck on Repeat" etc. I'll leave these thoughts to the side for the moment and take this to be a song to "put her face about once more". I think we'll have a decent lead single. I for some reason do have MEAGRE amounts of faith in her.

How does this sound a THING like Gina G?

Well looking on Twitter. A few tweets from Nerina Pallot...

Nerina

"Why are so many artists I previously loved throwing themselves on the funeral pyre of shit dance records just to stay in the game?"

"Just coz Katy B does it doesn't mean you should, M_________, M________, L_____B_______ and others. #justsaying"

"I like Katy B a lot, btw, coz it's authentic and doesn't smack of being shit scared of not getting on the Radio 1 playlist"

Victoria

"erm i always made 'shit dance records' thanks"

Nerina

"nope, Little Earthquakes was all kinds of amazing. Just not feeling the new one, soz. x"

Victoria

"the tori amos album??"

Sounding a little catty there! Tbh, Shake will make the Radio 1 playlist no matter what. Depending on how it performs will decided whether she gets further playlisting imo.

I have Little Boots and Marina out of those 3 names. Can someone help with the 3rd? :P

Harsh Nerina :o No idea who the third one is. I thought Madonna but she's already denied it!

As for Shake, it's catchy and I like it but it IS very late 80s/early 90s dance throwback, not Gina G but it has echoes of Technotronic and De'Lacy...

LOL @ Nerina! I'll bet deep down she wants to just unleash a generic club banger to plug the fact her last era flopped harder than Bionic :P

Loving Shake too btw, dunno why Nerina is getting all catty because it's not exactly a far cry from the Hands era...

Thinking about her as an artist, she's incredibly dry and very unlikeable. It won't ever work out.

Edit: I do love 'Shake' though.

I really liked 'Shake' actually - although I think it's more of a buzz single, similar to Calvin Harris' 'Awooga' earlier in the year.

Hopefully it gets picked up by R1 though - it'd be a shame for such a talent to just disappear, 'Hands' was an incredible album. Listening to 'Remedy' at the moment.

I've downloaded Shake. If Stuck On Repeat didn't exist I'd probably think it was all kinds of epic. As it is, it's essentially an inferior version, but inferior doesn't stop it being a good song in its own right. I certainly like it far more than half of 'Hands' (i.e. the half I hadn't heard months before it came out)
I ended up downloading it too. I do quite like it, the backing and verses especially. It's the chorus that I find weak, although I do like the way it all comes together for the final third of the track from 3:39 onwards. I'm clearly going to have to edit it though as it's too DJ friendly at the moment!
The song is perfect for 'the buzz single' type, for the catwalk or for being a background song while driving. It doesn't sound that brilliant without the context though, but every tune has its target. If LB wanted to make a hit record she surely shouldn't release this as a proper first single though.
I do think that this is supposed to be a buzz record, problem is that I can't imagine it working. Aside from internet loons, I think people will hear it and think she's just back with another soulless track and lose all interest.

"the tori amos album??"

YES. I'm willing to give her a chance for that. 'Shake' is far better than what I was expecting, although pretty much 'Stuck on Repeat' 2.0. I'm sure the new album will be just as dull as the first.
