Posted January 11, 201114 yr I realise that this is a very stupid topic and it blatently going to turn into a battle of the pop queens of the moment thread, although let's hope not, but who do you think out of the current crop of chart stars will still be successful in 5/10 years time. I've gone through this week's top 40 and save for a couple of artists I've categorised them into whether I think they will be successful in 5/10 years Yes Rihanna Black Eyed Peas David Guetta - Even if there aren't chart hits, I think he still will be producing Pink Usher Adele Eminem Nelly Will.I.Am No Matt Cardle Far East Movement Willow Smith - Will just be an annoying child actress instead Olly Murs Alexis Jordan Mike Posner Taio Cruz The Wanted N-Dubz Professor Green JLS Too Early to Tell Drake Katy B Jesse J Ellie Goulding Bruno Mars Nicki Minaj Eliza Doolittle - She could do well but I think her second album will do a Kate Nash/Duffy Maybe Katy Perry Cee-Lo Green - Even if he isn't making chart hits himself, he will probably be producing them Take That - Hmmm, I'm not sure they will still be making albums in 5/10 years time Cheryl Cole McFly Nicole Scherzinger - Similar to Cee-Lo, even if she isn't having chart success I think she will still be around in some capacity Tinie Tempah - Could be the next Dizzee Rascal Also one I haven't mentioned above is Lady GaGa but I really do think she'll have Madonna style success. Anyways I haven't mentioned the rock bands because barring them splitting up most of them will still be making records and having at least album success. Sorry for making this thread but I was just bored. :P
January 11, 201114 yr Author I think you may have dismissed Taio Cruz a little too quickly. I was thinking I should have put him in the maybe category
January 11, 201114 yr I basically agree with all of that, some of the acts you listed in the 'no' seem very likely one hit wonders- although I'd put Tinie in the too early to know, and Taio in the maybe section Edited January 11, 201114 yr by chart wizard
January 11, 201114 yr Those acts that can write songs, write songs for others, can move with the times and are versatile have a good chance.I think it is primarily based on having a loyal, long term and supportive fanbase.Musical tastes change all the time though so I doubt the love of dance/urban music will continue. Britney will, Lady Gaga could, Rihanna will, Beyonce will, Taio should, Bruno, Usher and Neyo will.Tinnie could, hopefully Adele will.It is hard to tell for Alex and Leona, Syco are $h!t and another label would probably be better in terms of long term planning.I think the big advantage they have is that they are easily amoungst the best vocalists in the country so it should serve them well.
January 11, 201114 yr It's hard to tell sometimes, these days one or two drastically wrong career moves can leave you hanging in the balance and when it gets to the point where radio refuse to playlist you anymore it's nigh on impossible to claw your way back from that.
January 11, 201114 yr It's hard to tell sometimes, these days one or two drastically wrong career moves can leave you hanging in the balance and when it gets to the point where radio refuse to playlist you anymore it's nigh on impossible to claw your way back from that. That seems to be true for British acts who have huge first hits then radio airplay is next to nothing for there follow up singles. This happened for Diana Vickers, Marina, Jay Sean, Joe Mcelderry,VV Brown,Little Boots, Ellie(other than Your Song), Maclean, Aggro. Not sure why radio support remains strong for US acts no matter what they release.R1 support does not guarantee hits anymore but commercial radio is becoming too chart orientated and fewer UK acts get the chance for long term careers it seems.
January 11, 201114 yr Marina has a huge fanbase though, especially in America. I can't see her going away anytime soon, really.
January 12, 201114 yr It's hard to tell sometimes, these days one or two drastically wrong career moves can leave you hanging in the balance and when it gets to the point where radio refuse to playlist you anymore it's nigh on impossible to claw your way back from that. This. Also with artists that are massive at the moment, if they're having low top 40 hits in 5 years time, they're basically "gone", and those artists that are quite small at the moment, if they're still having low top 40 hits in 5 years time, they're doing really well, if you know what I mean. But if I had to suggest some, although I'm not a fan of some of these, but I'm just trying to be objective, I think Beyonce, Usher, Eminem, Alicia Keys have high chances of being around for a long time. I also think Lady Gaga has a very good chance. Similar to Eminem, she's got such a large fanbase now, I can't see it disappearing in 5 years, even if it might decrease slightly. Rihanna could do, although I think she's over-exposed at the moment, which could harm her career (although it's not really her fault the public started downloading What's My Name? 2 months before its scheduled release, and now they're download S&M before it's even been officially announced as a single). Other artists who are like full-on huge in the US. Having been there for a few months, I really cannot imagine the likes of Taylor Swift and Lil Wayne going anywhere. They're not that big in the UK, but like with others, I think they're just simply too popular at the moment to lose their fanbase in 5 years. In terms of UK artists, perhaps JLS? There's some people I hope to still be around in 5 years, like Tinie Tempah and B.o.B., but I'm not sure if they will. If they can keep their material up to the standard of their first albums, they should have no problem, but with new artists, they often can't make another good album, or their second album gets promoted badly, and it turns out they haven't quite managed to accumulate such a fanbase as to continue selling well. :(
January 13, 201114 yr The list you've done is not very good. The likes of Eminem, Nelly, Alicia Keys etc. - they've already been around for the years. When is that going to change? They're multi-millionaires and have huge fanbases and their name alone scores them radio airplay. The same goes for the likes of Coldplay, Madonna, U2... you know they may flop but their name is so powerful and established that it doesn't matter anymore. The likes of N-Dubz, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah - it is too early to say. Who are we to say whether they will be around in 5-10 years time? Not all of them will, but some will. If they have a fanbase then they're solid.
January 14, 201114 yr I don't think you can really guess in a way. It's not about originality anymore and why should it. You just really don't know I mean look at Britney. She just does typical pop music. No voice like Mariah. Doesn't write her own songs like Madonna. She couldn't be any less unique. But she is without a doubt one of the most successful pop stars ever. A great entertainer and an impressive back catalogue. She has had an incredible 11/12 years and looks set to continue with album six. I bet loads of people didn't think she was still gonna be around today. Edited January 14, 201114 yr by David John
January 14, 201114 yr the yes list is just a list of pop stars that have ruled the roost for the past decade, in any case at least some will fade away in the next decade - imo the likes of pink, usher and nelly could be the first to fade!!
January 14, 201114 yr Britney will, Beyonce will, Usher will. All of these have already been out for 10+ years. Britney and Beyonce going on 13 years (Beyonce has been going solo for going on 9 years). And Usher has been making music for going on 18 years. AKA they have already acheived long term success.
January 14, 201114 yr It will be 10 years in 2012 that we were blessed with the emergence of Cheryl Cole. Still going strong :)
January 14, 201114 yr McFly wont split up - it all depends on how successful they remain and/or their ability to reinvent themselves. They've managed to gain a new high (in the singles chart, longevity!) after 7 years of which at least 5 were like just holding on to something. I guess it all depends on new trends and the ability to reinvent themselves for all artists. I can see Rihanna still going in 5 years time - and actually I think Katy Perry has a good chance, too.
January 14, 201114 yr I can see Rihanna still going in 5 years time - and actually I think Katy Perry has a good chance, too. I can see them being a modern day Madonna. Well Rihanna i can definitely see as a modern icon that future artists will refer too in interviews and say yes she is my inspiration :)
January 15, 201114 yr It will be 10 years in 2012 that we were blessed with the emergence of Cheryl Cole. Still going strong :) Keisha Buchanan has already made it to that decade, and by the time the racist has made it Keisha will have acheived world domination Cheryl couldn't even begin to dream of.
