Posted January 21, 201114 yr We've had a thread on vinyl. This one is on tapes. Are there any tapes that you will not throw away even if you have the same music on cd or mp3? I have 4 Tori Amos cassette singles that are part of my collection and I wont be parting with them. The China one is quite rare for a start. I had a stash of Now albums from the late 80s that I only threw out when I was moving house. I regret it now. How about you? Edited January 21, 201114 yr by tonyttt31
January 21, 201114 yr I threw out about 200 tapes a few years ago, but I couldn't bear to part this some of them. Mainly little compilations I made where I pasted together an inlay card and everything. That and my first copies of 'Unknown Pleasures' by Joy Division and 'The White Room' by The KLF. They were played so much that they deserve a dignified retirement.
January 21, 201114 yr I had every Britney single on cassette, even though soon after the first 3 singles I got my first CD player.....it just seemed that, as i'd already started, I might as well finish. But then they abruptly finished releasing cassette singles right through the middle of one album campaign. Cassette singles always looked great, so compact, it was sad when they slowly disappeared from the shops. Though what did p*** me off, was when they put a track on a cassette (B-side or remix) that wasn't actually on the CD single. Edited January 21, 201114 yr by IggyMcPig
January 21, 201114 yr Only demo tapes and live recording of gigs I went to. Aside from the odd casette single and loads of compilations I made
January 21, 201114 yr OMG i have loads of cassettes! Mostly pop stuff from 1999-2005 <3 Oh what good time these years were. No f***ing computers, less responsibilities, etc.
January 21, 201114 yr Got loads of cassette singles mainly PSB, as I used to collect their singles on tapes. And a few albums, I lost quite a few of them as the tape got worn out. I don't play them now, they are there for sentimental and collection value.
January 21, 201114 yr Author Cassettes were all I had until 1994 and even then I continued to buy tapes until 2001 if I saw an album cheap.
January 21, 201114 yr We had computers before 2005. :P Computers existed in the 60's. Doesn't mean everybody had them.
January 21, 201114 yr We've had computers in my house since like forever. I remember the only 3.5" floppy disks that really were floppy  I have a few Cassettes, and i'd like to hunt down the Overload Cassette to complete my Sugababes collection. My mum's old car had a tape deck and we bought that in 2002  Mine has a CD player though, so i don't really have anywhere to play them. Buying a Spice Girls release on Cassette is fo' sho' the marker of a 90's child.
January 21, 201114 yr I was part of the cassette single generation - between 1989 to 1993 everything I bought was on casette. I have loads of old cassettes in a box somewhere but my old hi-fi with had a twin cassette deck died. As I now listen to everything on mp3 or cd I'm no longer able to listen any of these old cassettes.

January 22, 201114 yr I never really liked or bought cassettes..... it was always a pain the arse to rewind and fast forward to the songs you wanted to hear. I remember that years ago, instead of Christmas cards, I used to do a compilation tape for my mates with a specially designed fold-out inlay with photos of us from the year. Still got copies of most of them somewhere. Also, the quality deteriorated too quickly.... even if rewound, after a few years, tapes would sound like they'd been recorded underwater by someone on smack.... Tapes I wouldn't throw out? Probably the ones I recorded on a Sunday, slaving over a hot pause button, listening to the top 40... Peter Kay spoke about this on one of his tours and it's exactly what I used to do... try to record the song minus the DJ introduction, so it'd play seamlessly. Used to take ages! Also, some I recorded many moons ago off the telly.... old Kenny Everett shows and stuff - although why I want to keep them when they're all on DVD now is anyone's business.
January 22, 201114 yr i used to have quite a few in the 90's, I had Cartoons - Toonage and The Best of the Wombles. proper epic. When I was around 13 and more into music I started getting addicted to making mixtapes. shame they have died out really, although there are a few very underground labels in america who do cassette only releases.

January 22, 201114 yr Don't worry, I'm with you. Say You'll Be There was my first Spice Girls cassingle. I personally never brought any Spice Girls music first time round as I was only about 4 and a half when Wannabe came out but I remember my brother had loads of the singles on tape and then he brought the Spice album on cassette about a year after it was released because my sister had it on CD and he wanted his own copy. Good times. My first albums were Now 40 and the Grease Soundtrack on cassette in '98  They looked pretty cool but the quality was terrible. Can't say I miss them too much.
January 23, 201114 yr I started buying singles in 92/93 and would usually buy the 7'' over the cassette single, I hated the cassette format - aside from of course buying blank tapes (there was no over format to record music 'back in the day', up until the minidisc which I very quickly defected to!). All that rewinding and fastforwarding... Eugh!
