Rhydian Dafydd, Ritzy Bryan, Matt Thomas

The Joy Formidable is an indie rock trio from North Wales, UK formed in 2007. The band members are Ritzy Bryan (vocals, guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass, backing vocals), and Matt Thomas (drums). Their powerful sound reminds me of My Bloody Valentine, The Breeders, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (early years) and Arcade Fire (their rockier songs). It's an intense sound.

They released a mini-album A Balloon Called Moaning in 2009 and their debut full-length album The Big Roar on 24 January 2011. The Big Roar received mostly positive reviews. If you want real rock, this album is highly recommended. The songs "Whirring", "Austere" and "The Greatest Light Is the Greatest Shade" are mind-blowing masterpieces and also their most accessible songs.

I've liked their last few singles and yes, they're VERY early 1990s in sound
They're pretty good live - haven't been wowed by their records though. There are better acts in the surrounding genre.

I shall be putting that to the test tonight :D

You'll be surprised how good they are live...

I interviewed their lead singer last year. Such a lovely lass. I'll have to stick it up on t'net at some point.

You should :D

Back home now. They were fantastic.

Watch this full of energy live version of Whirring @ The Sarm Sessions:

Here's the interview I did with them around the time they released their single Popinjay (which oddly enough didn't make the album, neither did Greyhound in the Slips, their collaboration with Paul Draper).

Check the new incredible music video of "Whirring", directed by Christopher Mills (the new ending of the song is "jaw dropping"!):

This is the best music video of the year so far!

Still not listened to it! :D

I really should rectify that if it's as good as you say...

"Whirring" has just gone top 20 on the Billboard Alternate Songs list. That means that "Whirring" was the 19th most played song on Alternative Radio across the whole of America. That is fantastic stuff for them.

Good news :)

The album is consistently good/very good. Totally loving "A Heavy Abacus" at the moment, which could potentially give them 3 consecutive #1s on my chart! :o
