Posted February 3, 201114 yr Back in the 90's and 00's (till 2008), most of the pop or dance international hits never bothered the US charts, and that didn't change much (it changed a bit since the recent supremacy of downloads over radio airplay) till now, so which current songs u think are least likely to get into the upper reaches of the US charts, either because of their style or the identity of the singer or act behind it, or nationality, or for other obvious and non-obvious reasons. here are some of my contenders for that list: - Well Well Well - Duffy ( too pop, too british and too shouty for America) - The Best Thing about me is you - Ricky Martin & Joss Stone ( for obvious reasons :naughty: ) - Get outta my way - Kylie Minogue ( she even dared to promote it there, chart peak: no 561 on the itunes pop charts for non- american artists whose names start with the letter k :D ) - Drummer Boy - Alesha Dixon (just listen to it  ) - Promise This - Cheryl Cole ( it will immediatly be rejected by all american radio stations once they hear the first 2 seconds :puke2: ) - Upside Down - Paloma Faith ( very classy, very british sounding to be liked by american audience) -Shame - Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow ( in the US the video would be censored for being too suggestive) -Hello - Martin Solveig & Dragonette (very dance) -Barbra Streisand - Duck Sauce (too camp for America) - Skinny Genes - Eliza Doolittle (she could make it into the charts, if she were to open the Grammys next week :arrr: ) -Any which way - Scissor Sisters (people say they're american, but the only followers they have there are New York subway pickpockets :D ) - My wicked heart - Diana Vickers (no need to say why) Edited February 3, 201114 yr by Big Mistake
February 5, 201114 yr - Promise This - Cheryl Cole ( it will immediatly be rejected by all american radio stations once they hear the first 2 seconds :puke2: ) - Upside Down - Paloma Faith ( very classy, very british sounding to be liked by american audience) -Hello - Martin Solveig & Dragonette (very dance) -Barbra Streisand - Duck Sauce (too camp for America) I think those could chart top 100 in the US with a lot of promotion. I agree about the rest though. I just can't feasibly see a song like Dummer Boy or My Wicked Heart selling there. They're good songs, but I just can't imagine people in the US would buy them.
February 5, 201114 yr I wouldn't rule out 'Hello' by Martin Solveig. It's even done well in New Zealand where dance music hardly ever does well in their charts. Plus, it's got an interesting music video concept. As we already know, Simon Cowell has taken The X Factor to America. There were reports that Cheryl Cole would become a judge on the US version. I'd probably laugh if Simon successfully launched Cheryl's solo career there (well, I guess money does talk after all - Europe!!!) so 'Fight For This Love' to be 2011's shock US #1.
February 5, 201114 yr I can't imagine Fight For This Love getting to #1 in the US, so it definitely would be a shock!! Looking at Cheryl's singles, I can't actually see anything that I can imagine being a US #1, although I think all of them could get into the top 100 if they got decent airplay over there (apart from perhaps The Flood, and Parachute). If she wants a #1 there, she'll have to get some new material, for sure. She actually got offered Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz, but she turned it down, and then that got #1 in the US. She must be SO gutted about that! :o Edited February 5, 201114 yr by Eric_Blob

February 6, 201114 yr What? 'Fight For This Love' is quite possibly (ignoring the Will.I.Am. connections) the most US friendly track Cheryl Cole has recorded. But I'm pretty sure at least 95% of our UK top 40 at the moment won't be a hit in the US. (After being a hit in the UK)
February 6, 201114 yr I also wouldn't rule out Eliza Doolittle. Rollerblades was the iTunes single on the week in America, and quite a few people on campus have been talking about her.

'Yeah Yeah' her duet with Travie McCoy from her last album could also scrape the Hot 100 if properly promoted . Edited February 8, 201114 yr by Big Mistake
February 8, 201114 yr I'm sure if they replaced the third verse of Fight For This Love with a rapper, it would be much more US friendly. Edited February 8, 201114 yr by starryeyed
February 8, 201114 yr I'm sure if they replaced the third verse of Fight fir this love with a rapper, it would be much more US friendly. Will.i.am would be a likely candidate if they ever did that
February 8, 201114 yr I'm pretty sure all of those could scrape the bottom of the Hot 100 at least with a huge promo push. Obviously some of them would probably struggle to get too high though, but I don't think the bottom reaches are as elitist as you seem to think. Surely the success of Yolanda Be Cool and Mumford & Sons disproves that. And don't forget Kylie has had several Hot 100 "hits", with the last one being as recent as early 2004 (Slow)... so your theory that GOMW would flop just because it's Kylie is blatant bull$h!t. And Love At First Sight and Can't Get You Out Of My Head were top 30 hits there (with the latter being top 10!) Edited February 8, 201114 yr by superbossanova
February 8, 201114 yr It's a shame they haven't released the Taio/Kylie/Travie version in the US actually. It still has the rap verses from Travie, but it has better vocals, and would've given Kylie another hit there.
February 11, 201114 yr Agreed. She was mentioned a few times on Idol this week, which is nice :) Anyway MusicWeek's Billboard chart report credits Higher as featuring Kylie and Travie... I know there is a digital EP out in the US with remixes of the KLylie version, hope it starts picking up speed...
February 11, 201114 yr Didn't see this post till now! Kylie and Scissor Sisters have devoted fan bases (the gays); Robbie, Duffy and Ricky Martin have name recognition. That said, I honestly think Hello (Martin Solveig) is most likely to become a top 40 hit. Top 40 radio in America has an extremely limited playlist because most stations play the hell out of a handful of songs. This is why it is so difficult to get into the top 40 of the Hot 100. Any song that makes the chart at all, particularly for a new or unknown artist, is considered a huge achievement. I don't see Cheryl Cole having a hit, frankly. She's just too... British? By this I mean her style, her background, the whole pop culture context of her fame is just not here. She is one of those artists who would really have to "Americanize" herself and it's usually a shame when this happens. It also rarely works -- UK artists that find success in the US are generally not making a great effort to do so.
February 11, 201114 yr The best thing about me is you has already charted in the US !!!! well the Spanish version anyway and it has only reached ninetysomething so far I think...so you'll probably be correct. Edited February 11, 201114 yr by moth09
