Why would you take the collaborations out though ? :???:

Just curiosity, these days there are many more collaborations than there used to be, nothing wrong with them, just pure curiosity

I does illustrate just how many collaborations there are when Beady Eye and The Vaccines get into the top 20 in this chart while not even making the top 30 in the real chart.

Once again, just for curiosity, I looked up the first chart of the 90's, only ONE song in the Top 40 was a collaboration, now it's about a 40/60 split collaboration/non-collaboration

I've been keeping a record of how the charts would look without collaborations since the beginning of the year. Here is the latest look

Interesting.

I wonder how it would look if you also removed anything non-original (i.e. covers & samples)?

This is actually a very interesting idea - as pointed out by Suedehead, it's interesting that a song that made #32 in the charts - can make #18 here, goes to prove that there are so many collabs nowadays.

Ignoring minor samples which you don't necessarily notice and giving Chris Brown the benefit of the doubt and letting him stay despite obvious Calvin Harris plagiarism, the following would be removed:

Make You Feel My Love

Your Song

The Time (Dirty Bit)

When We Collide

Happiness

Pack Up

Feeling Good

I Want To Hold Your Hand

So the rest would be moved up the appropriate number of places and the new 43-50 would be as follows:

43 N-Dubz - Girls

44 Ne-Yo - Beautiful Monster

45 Florence + The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

46 Eminem - Not Afraid

47 The Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

48 Katy B - Katy On A Mission*

49 Take That - Rule The World

50 Coldplay - Fix You

*This song is based on an unreleased Benga song called 'Man On A Mission', if you want to exclude that as well Ellie Goulding is #50 with Starry Eyed

^ I Gotta Feeling samples David Guetta, so that would have to go too.

Infact, all the Black Eyed Peas singles since Boom Boom Pow (I Gotta Feeling, Meet Me Halfway, Rock That Body, Imma Be and The Time) used proper samples.

Their next single, Just Can't Get Enough doesn't sample anything though. Or there might be a sample, but it isn't credited on the album (infact, their new album only has 4 credited samples :().

That comes under 'minor samples you don't necessarily notice'

I suppose Happiness' sample isn't exactly noticeable but since it goes through the entire song I thought I'd knock it out anyway

JCGE just steals a song title

Oh, okay.

I'd say you were right to knock out Happiness though. I mean, that is probably more extensive sampling than seen in even The Time, since it's basically Brazil Second Edit changed into verse/chorus/bridge structure, with some singing over the top. It's just The Time samples a song that literally everybody betweem the ages of 5 and 70 in the entire world knows very well.

I keep on thinking their new single title is a cover of the old Depeche Mode hit.

Well, in my scenario I was thinking about excluding any with samples, however innocuous...

So if an otherwise 100% original song sampled one second of another song it's suddenly unoriginal?

Well, in my scenario I was thinking about excluding any with samples, however innocuous...

That would kick out most of the chart, probably.

And what about those songs that don't sample, but sound very similar to other songs (Eyes Wide Shut and Yeah 3x, for example)?

wow, so if there were no collaborations we would've seen two re-entries from older songs :o

this would be an interesting addition actually

I don't get it? Both of those songs *did* re-enter (60 & 62) as did many others.

in the top 40 :P

Well then there's only 1... :P

This topic sort of reminded me of the Homegrown chart which just stopped being posted at some point last year probably due to lack of interest. I've decided to type up the Homegrown Top 40 for the past 5 weeks. As you'll be able to see in the thread, The Vaccines/Beady Eye did even better on that chart :P
