March 2, 201114 yr Maybe it's just that Clegg had spent his time preparing for some intelligent questions rather than a childish jibe.
March 3, 201114 yr Actually, I've just thought of a game - "101 Uses For A Nick Clegg", I'll start off - 'Prime Minister's nob fluffer...'
March 3, 201114 yr I don't get all this dislike and criticism of Clegg. I'd like to see any of you lot who are making fun of him try to do his job.
March 3, 201114 yr I don't get all this dislike and criticism of Clegg. I'd like to see any of you lot who are making fun of him try to do his job. What, to remember to run the country when you're Deputy Prime Minister?
March 3, 201114 yr I don't get all this dislike and criticism of Clegg. I'd like to see any of you lot who are making fun of him try to do his job. What don't you get? The fact that he's a two-faced little w/anker who sold out every principle he fought the election on, or the fact that his "role" seems utterly superfluous if, as "Call Me Dave" says, he's still running the country even when he's not in it because he's busy selling arms to dodgy Middle East dictators.....? -_- I mean, EXCUSE ME ALL TO F/UCK if I actually think that this "role" of Deputy Prime Minister (I mean, what is it exactly? Is it similar to Vice President..?) has to actually be properly defined because I'm buggered if I actually know what the hell it is the little prick actually does.... <_<
March 3, 201114 yr I'm too young to remember really but surely the role of Deputy Prime Minister has always raised these questions... the fact that Clegg doesn't do an awful lot isn't actually the problem, it's more that (as Grimly said) he's gone been stuffed up the Tories' arse since last May.
March 3, 201114 yr I'm too young to remember really but surely the role of Deputy Prime Minister has always raised these questions... He's supposed to be a little bit more than what the "traditional" role has been though, seeing as how, supposedly Clegg is a Coalition "partner", and he's not a member of the same party as Cameron, so he's not, say, a Deputy PM in the John Prescott sense.... So, I think this is why Clegg's role and what he does really needs to be looked at with a lot more scrutiny... I'm pretty sure there's a heck of a lot of Lib Dem voters who would quite like this to be scrutinized as well....

Think when Reagan had a general anaesthetic after being shot in 1981. To be fair you don't know what Clegg does BEHIND THE SCENES Scott. None of us do. I'm sure he has lots of paperwork to do and meetings to chair etc. Edited March 3, 201114 yr by Common Sense

When the PM is out of the country chatting-up Middle East dictators.... This is kind of the whole issue... Chris, are you really this thick...?
March 3, 201114 yr HE WAS ON BLOODY HOLIDAY THOUGH..... When the PM is out of the country chatting-up Middle East dictators.... This is kind of the whole issue... Chris, are you really this thick...? No I'm far from thick. I'm sure both he and Dave were only a phone call away though. As Dave said, with all the modern media they don't have to be in the UK. Thre are othere ministers too don't forget.

March 3, 201114 yr So, it brings me back to the original question - WHAT IS THE POINT OF NICK CLEGG??? If Dave can run things on a 3G cell-phone.... Do you happen to know how much more per annum Clegg gets than other Cabinet ministers? I'm curious. Is Deputy PM just a title with no extra pay maybe?
March 3, 201114 yr I don't get all this dislike and criticism of Clegg. I'd like to see any of you lot who are making fun of him try to do his job. I'd quite like to see him do his job too. I'm not criticising him for having a holiday now and then even if the timing was poor and to be fair Hague IS the Foreign Secretary but I'm seeing an awful lot of Tory policies go through and barely any influence from the Lib Dems. I don't doubt they're trying but maybe the public would place more faith in them still if we could actually see him in particular do more to curb their more right wing policies even if ultimately he can't. At least show you're trying

At least show you're trying Dude, he's not really trying because, essentially, he's a Tory at heart.... As I said, he was member of the Cons in Cambridge.... He might be more of a Ken Clarke sort of Tory, but still....
March 3, 201114 yr Right as far as I can see from Googling the Deputy PM gets exactly the same salary as other Cabinet Ministers, £134,565. That's because Deputy PM isn't a permanent position defined by a specific role and someone's made Deputy PM at the discretion of the PM who may decide too not to have a Deputy PM.
March 3, 201114 yr Author He's supposed to be a little bit more than what the "traditional" role has been though, seeing as how, supposedly Clegg is a Coalition "partner", and he's not a member of the same party as Cameron, so he's not, say, a Deputy PM in the John Prescott sense.... So, I think this is why Clegg's role and what he does really needs to be looked at with a lot more scrutiny... I'm pretty sure there's a heck of a lot of Lib Dem voters who would quite like this to be scrutinized as well.... Even John Prescott deputised when Blair was away... Prescott would never have just decided to go on holiday if he was meant to be in charge, especially when there was a crisis involving British citizens. Maybe it's just that Clegg had spent his time preparing for some intelligent questions.... Preparing WHAT exactly? Whenever there was a question when Clegg was in the Commons on Tuesday relating to his "responsibilities" (political reform"), he basically just said they'll be "publishing details soon... in other words, kicked into the long grass, as the Tories have vetoed any House of Lords reform, and the "right to recall MPs" isn't exactly going to be progressed anytime soon, considering that would mean about half of Lib Dem MPs facing by-elections. Now that the Bill for the AV Referendum has gone through, Clegg's literally got no departmental responsibilities at all... meaning, one would assume that, at the very least, he'd fill in when the PM was away... but apparently not. After last week, I'm genuinely at a loss to see what the point of Clegg being in government is. Is it literally JUST to keep the Lib Dems quiet and get them to go through the lobbies for the Coalition? I don't exactly see why he deserves to stay in Chevening at the taxpayer's expense for THAT.
March 3, 201114 yr I don't exactly see why he deserves to stay in Chevening at the taxpayer's expense for THAT. Deserve it or not he gets to stay there as he holds the title of Deputy PM. As the title holder has no official separate residence it was decided he'd share with the Foreign Secretary.
March 3, 201114 yr Author Deserve it or not he gets to stay there as he holds the title of Deputy PM. As the title holder has no official separate residence it was decided he'd share with the Foreign Secretary. Why does he deserve it though? When John Prescott lost all his departmental responsibilities but stayed Deputy PM back in 2006, he was forced to give up his country mansion after a tabloid storm... and, unlike Clegg, he atleast filled in while Blair was away.
