my OP clearly didn't age well, but who would've predicted in 2011 that streaming would come and massively overinflate sales giving songs towards the end of a decade a big advantage?

at least the human race hasn't been wiped out though (yet?)

I found this prediction particularly interesting

Yeah it's definitely Aston and Harry who will go solo.

Oritse and Liam/Zayn will be the "Nadine" of each boyband and will go on to have a less successful music career.

Marvin and Louis will resort to any reality shows that they can get a gig on (SCD, IAC, CBB etc).

JB and Niall will fade away.

Justin Bieber is already getting less popular here, so I think JB having a massive selling single is 90% not going to happen.

 How about 4 massive singles in the Top 30 alone, none of which are "Baby".

I don't think OG(ITW) will finish anywhere near the top 10, I can see there being loads of million sellers this decade and OG(ITW) has crawled to the million and isn't selling much on top of it.

Muse and The Killers getting #1 hits seems highly unlikely (a very welcome prospect but a highly unlikely one nonetheless) unless this Gotye song is actually a hit and actually manages to return indie/rock/alternative music back to the mainstream. I do think a Muse Greatest Hits would be huge though and that a Rihanna Greatest Hits would be Immaculate Collection-scale enormous.

Taking into account trickle sales over the years I think the barrier for the top 100 of the decade could end up being over 800k barring an unforeseeable massive slump in sales.

'21' is absolutely guaranteed the #1 album of the decade. Another massive sales phenomenon like this is not going to happen, I guarantee it.

I also think we could see at least one non-top-10 hit in the top 100, massive selling non-top-10 hits seem to be getting a lot more commonplace of late. Maybe Set Fire To The Rain could sneak in if it's a strong trickle seller.

Bré was actually quite spot on with this :o Mostly that is. Only Girl did indeed not finish anywheren ear the Top 10, there were loads of million sellers, Muse & The Killers did not get #1 hits, Gotye did become a hit, the barrier for the Top 100 was over 800k (more like over a million and something lol), 21 did end up as the #1 album of the decade to no one's surprise and we actually had FIVE non-top 10 hits in the EOD Top 100: Photograph (Ed Sheeran), Radioactive (Imagine Dragons), A Thousand Years (Christina Perri), Let It Go (Idina Menzel) and Do I Wanna Know (Arctic Monkeys)!

And who knows what could happen? Perhaps we'll start doing what they do in Korea, where everyone pays a monthly fee to download a certain (high) amount of songs. If that happens, and gets popular, nothing in 2010 or 2011 will stand a chance of even making the top 100, since sales would go astronomically huge, totally eclipsing the sales of today.

Omg look at Eric over here predicting the rise of the Spotify empire way back in 2011 (sort of)!

although...

Ed Sheeran will probably get a massive number one with his lead single from album #2 - remember I said it first :P

 Fair point but this would have been particularly impressive had he said 3rd album instead of 2nd given that Sing "only" made #83 on the EOD chart

Predictions that Matt Cardle would be huge & Ed Sheeran would fade away were great in retrospect

Also that despite the smash success of 21 literally nobody predicted that by 2019 Adele might have had at least a second smash song or era.

We need to find more old threads like this! Some also bang on predictions in here mind.

I found this prediction particularly interesting

I was about to say  Although Marvin and JB - and to a certain extent Aston - have actually had the most prominent careers since JLS ended, even if not within music. Poor Reesh has indeed been the Nadine, in fact I'm surprised he hasn't done the jungle yet. Would do him good to go on next year I think, especially after the ordeals he's had of recent years.

JB? Wasn't his post-JLS career literally just working on a farm? Am not aware of anything else he's done...

I wouldn't say any of them have really achieved anything particularly notable outside of the group, Marvin and Aston have had some limited success but that's it.

JB's farming work gets him often on shows like Countryfile and The One Show IIRC!

He also presents on Songs of Praise and his own show for CBeebies called Down on the Farm. He did a series for BBC One this year as well called Walks of Life which was him and a lady called Mehreen Baig doing country walking routes around the UK with historical/spiritual significance.

And that meme never gets old

10-15 songs will sell 1,000,000 in the decade (excluding older songs which pass the milestone before 2019).

Adele's "21" will be in the top 10 albums of the decade, along wih one greatest hits album - possibly by Rihanna.

Sad that selling a million used to be newsworthy and now it’s pretty much standard for the big artists. So weird to read this all back. Is there a thread for the next decade?

Reading the first page, imagine if a time traveller came back and told us that Rihanna - Only Girl wouldn't even be in the top 100. None of us would have believed it! :o

It's a bit silly really, that song was massively successful (it was released near the end of the year and ended up the 4th biggest-selling song, and one of the songs ahead of it was an X Factor winner's single). I remember how amazed I was at its success in the charts.
