The UK and French governments have been strongly pushing for a no-fly zone over Libya, but the US are known to be sceptical.

Personally, I'm not totally opposed to a no-fly zone, but it absolutely must have UN permission, and it must be clear that Libyan people want it. But I'm sceptical of whether it would actually work... isn't most of the struggle on the ground?

I say no.

It is not the job of other nations to play world policeman.

What is happening there is shocking but it is the business of the Libyan people to sort out.

The permission of the UN is absolutely essential - I don't know enough details about the situation over there but a no-fly zone could be possible. I really don't know what the right answer is. The most important thing for other nations was to get their own citizens out, it's difficult to see what the right course of action from there is.
We shouldn't intervene if there is no evidence that that is the will of the Libyan people. Otherwise we will end up with another Islamic nation with a grudge against the west. So far, there is no indication that the rebels want outside intervention.

The UN resolution passed this week was worded to make it clear that it did not authorise military action to avoid a repeat of Iraq.

I say No to be honest, Malta are stuck in the middle as well, its also a British colony, and I've got family over there.

Former Colony.

They've been independent since 1964.

Well, seeing as we've already interfered in the first place by selling Ghaddafi all these weapons, then it's only fair that we supply some arms to the other side free, GRATIS and for nothing to even up the score is it not....? I think so....

There's going to be a no-fly zone and air strikes on Libya after the UN just passed a resolution backing it. Very surprising... it seemed to me that the idea was dead in the water as recently as this morning.

I don't know how I feel about this... on the one hand, I'm not comfortable with the idea of Benghazi citizens being slaughtered (as they surely would be otherwise - it's the heart of the protest movement, so they probably will be more resilient than the other cities that have already fallen to Gadaffi). But, on the other hand, will it even WORK?

Maybe it's a bit too late anyway. Whilst the world has been preoccupied with Japan, Gadaffi's forces have re-taken nearly all the rebel held territory.

Wonder what we're going to air strike? Gadaffi's compound? Arms dumps? Troops?

Out of interest, which members of the security council abstained?

Russia and China both abstained rather than exercising their veto. India and Germany also abstained. Lebanon voted in favour.

I see. -_-

Germany are always a bit wishy-washy non-committal ain't they?

Any other Arab countries on the security council apart from Lebanon?

I am uneasy about this.

While any massacre of the Libyan people would be regrettable where was the UK and France when 700,000 were dying in Rwanda ? where were the UK and France when the people of East Timor were being massacred by the Indonesians ? why is nothing being done against Mugabe ? why is nothing being done about the atrocities being committed by the Bahraini police ?

Am not defending Gadaffi but it seems to be the west dealing with another bogeyman from the past now Saddam Hussein is out of the way while ignoring even worse stuff elsewhere.

I see. -_-

Given their history it's not surprising Germany are reluctant to vote for military action. Lebanon are currently the only Arab country on the security council.

Maybe they shouldn't be on the security council then. Assuming they accept this action is for humanitarian reasons, what would they suggest to stop the slaughter? A strongly worded letter to Gadaffi? That would work..... (although it didn't with 'their' chap -_- )

And how long are Germany going to use 'their history' as an excuse for never backing any military action? It's a cop out(and a very convenient one) in my opinion.

I actually wouldn't allow anyone on the security council to abstain. It should be a Yay or a Nay. Put your money where your mouth is. If you don't want the responsibility, don't accept the membership.

Anyway, this action against Gadaffi is all well and good. Can we expect a similar UN resolution against the Bahrain government now? I'm not holding my breath.

UNLIKE Saddam though, Ghadafi has committed an act of terrorism on British soil, he's a f/ucking war criminal who should've been dealt with 20-odd years ago IMO.... <_<

I've got this terrible feeling that as soon as the first 'Western' bombs drop, the 'Arab Street' will rally behind Gadaffi against the infidels. Even though the Arab League supported a NFZ.....

We'll see. He is a total nutter though is Mad Dog.

Here's his latest efforts from the New York Times

The Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi, praised Germany. He told RTL, the German commercial television channel, Tuesday that “Germany was the only one with a chance of doing business in Libyan oil in the future.”

The Germans, he said, “have taken a very good position toward us, very different than many other important countries in the West.” Along with Germany, “our oil contracts are going to Russian, Chinese and Indian firms, the West is to be forgotten,” Colonel Qaddafi said.

The Libyan leader said President Nicolas Sarkozy of France was “his friend,” but was “suffering from mental illness.”

Well, I wont criticise them for being critical of Iraq though....

Quoted the wrong post not used to this forum
