Posted March 16, 201114 yr Unemployment now stands at 2.53m, which is the highest since 1994. I think it speaks volumes that, even in the middle of a massive recession two years ago, unemployment didn't rise this high... yet, just 10 months after the Tories took office and started slashing public-sector jobs, unemployment is already climbing back to levels not seen since... well, since the Tories were last in government.
March 16, 201114 yr Another example of how $h!t the Tories are :( They are just slaughtering the economy with the spending cuts and the massive rise in costs to education. How do they expect long term success for the economy when they are forcing people to not consider university due to cost. Education is the root to any economy :( Eh when is the next election so we can vote these bast*rds out.
March 16, 201114 yr This is just the news I wanted to see with my impending graduation. I wonder if I assassinated Cameron and Osbourne, would there be a queue of people waiting to employ me? [Or rather pay me for such a deed]

March 16, 201114 yr There'd be a queue of people claiming that they did it Would make it far harder to convict me though :kink:
March 16, 201114 yr Here's a statistic that should haunt the Tories for ever. Under the last Tory government, the unemployment figure was higher than the figure they inherited (the figure that was considered so bad it was a major part of their 1979 election campaign) for every single month of their 18 years in power. That was despite over 30 changes to the way the figures were calculated, all but two or three of which saw the unemployed figures fall for a month before resuming the upward trend. We've really only got two hopes. Either Clegg shows some balls after the referendum and starts to stick up for Lib Dem values. Or the Lib Dems replace him with someone who will.
March 16, 201114 yr I saw this on the news, and it does make me wonder how long it'll take the Tories to get it that slashing public spending does not work because while it cuts the deficit, it's leaving too many people behind. I've said it before and I'll say it again, what exactly is the problem with a series of carefully structured raises in tax? This Robin Hood tax would be a start, but I'd be tempted to slap a big percentage increase in income tax on the very highest earners. I'm sure that would take a large slice out of this deficit the Coalition is so obsessed with eradicating, regardless of the costs.
March 16, 201114 yr I say bring back mighty Ming. He may not be a 'vote winner' because of his age, but he's more likely to be able to repair the damage than most Lid-Dem MP's he's stuck by what he believes in, plus it'd be pretty cool for the Deputy PM to be my MP :kink:
March 16, 201114 yr Author This Robin Hood tax would be a start, but I'd be tempted to slap a big percentage increase in income tax on the very highest earners. Ha, fat chance of that while this lot are in... George Osborne said in an interview recently that he wants to bring the income tax rate on high earners down from 50% back down to 40% "as soon as possible".

I'm sure that would take a large slice out of this deficit the Coalition is so obsessed with eradicating, regardless of the costs. Doing more to close the Tax gap too. There is estimates that billions is going uncollected because HMRC doesn't have the staff or resources to go after it. Not to mention there are a good dozen or so loop holes that need closed. Perhaps an EU law saying that companies who transfer operations on paper only to tax havens are still liable for corporation tax at their previous base unless they physically pack up and move the works to the tax haven. Something in the Guardian recently proclaimed the City of London to be the biggest tax haven of them all, as it's not actually governed by the UK government technically speaking and thus has a zero rate for Corporation tax

March 16, 201114 yr Dreading the Budget next week If they put up fuel or Road Tax I am actually going to drive to Westminster and run the f***er over, tie him to my roof and drive round the country with my kill on display. I will also steal the red box and 'accidentally' scrap fuel duty :kink:
March 16, 201114 yr What was his reasoning for that? So that the rich have more money available to give to the Tory party.
March 16, 201114 yr I think it says alot that this is where unemployment is before the cuts have been rolled out, it's only going to get higher and higher. for example look at just unemployment for the ages 16-24, almost 1 million unemployed and not in education or training, and this is before the future jobs fund and ema have been scrapped which means that number will rise, this is the reason that despite having A Levels I am working a $h!tty job for £5 an hour getting told constantly by co-workers that i'm too over qualified to work there, infact I have more qualifications than anyone there, yet get paid the least, it wouldnt be so bad if I knew I could move into a career I want, but there really isnt hope with this much unemployment. It really is tragic how high unemployment is right now and it's a complete sham that the Government are failing to recognise this and instead are just making cuts that will rise unemployment significantly. I understand the economy is f***ed, but f***ing up alot of jobs in a already dire job market is not the answer to save it.

It just shows how this lot don't understand the value of anything... how depressing is it that ALL they care about is cutting the deficit, with complete disregard for all the young people that will be unemployed, the entrenched poverty, the closed libraries and swimming pools, the higher crime rates?

It just shows how this lot don't understand the value of anything... how depressing is it that ALL they care about is cutting the deficit, with complete disregard for all the young people that will be unemployed, the entrenched poverty, the closed libraries and swimming pools, the higher crime rates? You can see the initial logic behind this. Obviously a company with eight employees is going to find it harder to cope with someone taking parental leave than a company with 8000 employees. However, the proposal to exempt companies with up to ten employees from parental leave obligations could backfire. It could mean that a company with ten employees finds it harder to expand because of the new obligations they would take on. It would be more sensible to look at how the government can help small companies take on a temporary employee to cover for someone on parental leave.

March 17, 201114 yr Whilst I am a pacifist by nature, the current Tory government make me want to foster a violent uprising to unseat them. I'm dreading the budget, as this one will effect me when I get back.
March 17, 201114 yr So that the rich have more money available to give to the Tory party. I mean their official line, I'm not in the slighest bit surprised by that :P
