Ha just woke up and yep On The Floor with a big lead :yahoo:

In how many hours she managed to go number 1?

Erm I can't remember must have been quarter to 12/12ish??

Now JLO Has Smashedddd It

Time for Katy B to claim the #2, Listening to it in the garden through Dr Dre Beats HEAVEN

Are you talking about those headphones that Dr. Dre did!? :o

There is NOTHING generic about Bad Romance

Um, well, for starters, it sounds the same as Poker Face, Paparazzi and Just Dance.

J-Lo's track is one of the worst songs of the year but it's catchy.
Welcome back JLo!! #1 on Itunes!! :cheer: :cheer: it was top 25 on itunes around 3am! Can somebody please help me how to find check the popularity bar on itunes? since I updated to the new itunes version can't see any popularity bar anymore...
Um, why?

I thought Replay would've been the "oddest choice" in that list. I was dubious about including it, because of the reggae influences it has, but it really is so generic (not to mention, dreadful).

Other than Poker Face, Bad Romance doesn't sound too much like any other typical mainstream pop song. Sure, some artists have tried to copy it since but that doesn't make it generic. It doesn't reference "the club" for starters, the lyrics are fairly unusual when compared to other female singers out at the moment... I could go on. Replay the oddest choice? Really? An incredibly watered-down reggae influence (which I don't hear) doesn't make it any less generic. It's produced by J.R Rotem and sounds like everything else he's done! I cannot hear any difference between Iyaz and Akon/JLS/Jason Derulo etc, they all mould into one.

On The Floor IS generic. It's basically Jennifer Lopez doing Stereo Love with added typical "club" lyrics. As someone mentioned earlier, you can't get a more generic rapper than Pitbull either, All Night Long and I Like It sound like a thousand different songs.

I fully expected On The Floor to sound exactly like Dynamite (the main 'generic' sound at the moment). It didn't which surprised me. I really don't think OTF counts as generic. Each to their own I guess.

Replay was pretty much the *most* generic on that list Eric...

There's a link on the first page of this thread or you could use this site, which is also very good. ^_^

Yes, All Night Long and I Like It are very generic too. But even the non-Pitbull versions are very generic.

And Pitbull has done some non-generic songs. He did Hotel Room Service with Nicole Scherzinger, which isn't generic, and he did Shut It Down with Akon, which isn't generic.

Also, when I say a song is "generic", I'm talking about the instrumentals, not the lyrics. So I'm not basing whether a song is generic on whether they reference a "club". If We No Speak Americano contained lyrics about clubbing, I wouldn't say it's generic.

Also, NOBODY has tried to copy Bad Romance. Bad Romance sounds like an 80's pop song (think Depeche Mode). The other songs that sound like 80's pop songs aren't copying Bad Romance, they're copying the same songs that Bad Romance copied (although that said, I can't actually think of any songs that have "copied" Bad Romance. Closest that comes to mind is Poison by Nicole Scherzinger, which isn't that close).

Iyaz moulds into one with Akon? Well, I await the day when Iyaz releases a song such as I Wanna Love You.

On the Floor ONLY sounds like Stereo Love from recently though. That's the point. When Bad Romance came out, it sounded exactly like the two biggest other pop songs of the year (Just Dance and Poker Face), and it was like "No, not this again". I've been hearing songs like Bad Romance since the day I was born. It's a bit old for me now. :(

Born This Way was a bit different to most of Lady Gaga's other songs, so hopefully the rest of her next album follows suit.

If J-Lo can get to #1, there's no reason why the Spice Girls or Shakira can't ever score a #1 in the near future too. :)

I don't think "Bad Romance" sounds eighties at all really, I'd argue it's more early nineties from the sample it uses - especially the Human Resource "Dominator" sample which was a Top 40 hit in September 1991.

Well the Spice Girls aren't together anymore, so I think it's highly unlikely they'll score another #1. Shakira could though.

Or Edward Maya! Oh wait...

Shakira was well on her way to get a UK #1 last year with 'Loca', but then they f***ed up the release...

Bad Romance also samples a song called Ballanation by DJ Dean (or at least, I hope they sampled it, or Lady Gaga could find herself in court if DJ Dean wanted to take action), and that was made mid-00's, I think. It still sounds very 80's to me though, and usually when I've read reviews on Bad Romance, or Lady Gaga's material in general, they comment on how it sounds old-fashioned, and often specifically mention the 80's.

The reason you see that in reviews is because a lot of reviewers are lazy and default to describing anything with synths or sounding retro as being '80s'. :P

Hotel Room Service isn't generic? Oh boy. I'm sure I'm not the only person who thinks Iyaz moulds into everyone else in his genre.

I can't hear any similarities between Just Dance and Bad Romance, only Poker Face. The sample doesn't really sound eighties and sounds nothing like Depeche Mode (I'm sure when RedOne was making Poison he wasn't looking at Depeche Mode for inspiration). The synth makes me think of the nineties and German's in gimp masks, haha. Born This Way is a rip-off and hopefully the album doesn't follow suit.

The reason you see that in reviews is because a lot of reviewers are lazy and default to describing anything with synths or sounding retro as being '80s'. :P

Amen.

ANYWAY. IT'S ALL RELATIVE.
