On the flip side most of these were pre streaming so physical media was only way to find out if you liked an album (which would be donated to a charity shop within 6 months normally) so I reckon huge physical sales now is more impressive no matter how many formats 😃

Well most of these albums were released in 3 formats only ,1 LP, 1 Vinyl and 1 cassette so there is no comparison to today where you have 5 cd 5 vinyl and 5 tapes at least of the same album! Back then it meant so much more...! Those were the real records!!!

Fan bulk buying has always been a thing, I remember buying 4 copies of McFly’s Wonderland album In 2005.😂 It’s not as niche now, but a sale is a sale and it all should be counted.

I’m not a Taylor fan, but all artists have many variants now and no one else is debuting with 100K+, never mind 200K, so it’s still a huge achievement for her.

Abba was pretty much a one off as their first studio album in 40 years and Ed Sheeran is no longer capable of hitting the mark leaving only Adele and Taylor as possibles.

A lot of acts are releasing in multiple variants but yet they aren't making this list so it is still an achievement I think, after all no one is making people buy all the variants, she simply has the fans to do it, in that respect all the acts on the list simply had the fans to do it.

I do understand your point but ultimately she's still the only one making this list these days.

Its not the same as the artists back then didnt try to milk their funs with all these variants and then adding two songs each time every two weeks for the next two months, like Taylor did since yoou mentioned her, If you bought 4 copies of the same album... well not much i can say about that. haha. All i said is that you can not compare todays sales with those and the reasons are very obvious.

The ones you mentioned are today and its like you said, even though i think nobody has milked their funs the way swift has especially with her last one. All i said is that you cant compare todays sales with the ones in the 80s,90s,2000s

Not really cause back then you would buy an album, if you were not a hard die fun (and most likely you`d love the album but you would buy 1 copy not 10) because of the singles they released or because you heard iot from a friend. It would still be one version of the album though, not 10-15.

Not really, think i seen leona lewis and Susan boules record breaking albums in charty shops not long after releases and subo wasn't exactly know for her massive hits 🤣

I must say that in every charity shop I go to at least 1/5 albums are "I Dreamed A Dream" 😆

Poor Subo but its trubo🤣

Also I vaguely remember a lot of albums selling really well after a performance on the x factor, most of the time they'd only released 1 song so more evidence to back up the you had to buy them to find out if you liked them 😅

i am not saying it never happened but the same way now you stream an album out of curiosity and its gets sales......so i wonder how many people stream it out of curiosity and they never buy it cause they dont like it much.

The difference being streaming and not liking is only something like 0.00001 of a sale, purchasing and not liking is 1 whole sale 🤣

Comparing the two eras is always difficult - but Taylor definitely deserves to be making this list. I don't think anyone else could achieve it in the current climate and that is really impressive regardless of the number of formats etc. She has some hardcore fans but she also has a huge amount of more casual fans who are also clearly listening and buying it.

She is by far the biggest act on the planet at the moment and she's at the peak of popularity, she's comparable to how big acts like Oasis were in the 90s and Adele was at her peak so she deserves to be listed among them in terms of high sellers. For every argument that she has multiple format purchases, she has to also combat people who will love the album but only stream it - which will generate way less sales now that the casual supermarket purchases that would have boosted a lot of the others on this list.

If anything she'll be unfairly underrepresented on most lists because her most recent albums are hugely popular but won't be mentioned among the all time biggest sellers - and I'd probably listen to an argument that if she'd been releasing in the physical era that she'd potentially be higher up this list than she currently is.

Meanwhile she's up to No 29 on the list with 3 days sales left She only needs another 30k to make one of the top 20 biggest weekly sales in UK Chart history.

This like this is the first taylor album i bought in years and only because was a half price version, otherwise shes always at the top of my spotify wrapped by an unhealthy margin but I rarely buy physical media

Quite right- I forgot about that- although they too had a push (if I recall) with access to pre-sale tickets to their concert, which probably gave them higher first week sales than they may otherwise have had.
