I hated it :( On the plus side I started spending my money on old albums by The Clash, Joy Division, Jesus and Mary Chain...the only bands that were really doing it for me around this time were Super Furry Animals and The Beta Band.

I could list all the singles and album that I loved from 1998 but it wouldn't mean anything. I'm sure there's years that you love that I don.t :)

Actually I will list albums....:)

Massive Attack - Mezzenine

Mansun - Six

REM - Up

Air - Moon Safari

Tori Amos - From the Choirgirl Hotel

Madonna - Ray of Light

Garbage - Versiopn 2.0

Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing

Embrace - The Good Will Out

Great to see somebody else who 'gets' the E17 and Five songs! I know they should be quarantined as boyband pap, but something about the pair of them takes me right back. Each Time in particular I feel should be far more remembered than it actually is.

Oh agreed, they definitely both make me slightly nostalgic. I'm not usually a fan of boyband ballads but there's something about the Five one I really like that I can't really explain. Mind you, I always did quite like Five far more than any other boyband so maybe I just prefer their voices.

I can't support you on the Boyzone one, however, I'm afraid. I listened to it just last week (not by choice) so it should be quite fresh in my memory. But I still only have a vague memory of even the chorus line, let alone the rest of the song

Probably my favourite ever year for music overall. I was retrospectively compiling my end of year top 40's for 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 last week and 1998 was by far the hardest to do as there were about 75 songs I'd have liked to have included.

The quality of these #2's isn't overly reflective of the year imo, a lot of the #1's and the songs that charted lower/not at all seemed to be of a higher quality than this lot overall.

I think this is a very good year for #2s! But maybe I'm just biased as an R&B fan, actually having a decent selection of songs from that genre to vote for for a change, when in pretty much every other year we've done it's been literally non-existent.

But you're right the year shouldn't be entirely judged by this list - the Now (39, 40 and 41) and the Hits albums (New Hits, Fresh Hits, Big Hits 98 and Hits 99) all show it was a strong and varied year for the charts IMO. I think Super Furry Animals are even on Fresh Hits 98 (which is the first compilation I ever bought, by the way [/pointless fact]), if I recall correctly, with Ice Hockey Hair :D

A lot of people give 1997-99 a hard time for "cheesy pop" like Steps, etc, but that's such a closed-minded view of the music scene at the time IMO. It was never dominating the charts like the horrible "club" music at the moment. But I'm just rambling incoherently now, anyway.

On another note, why am I the only person to vote for Top of the World? :( It's going to come last at this rate. Even novelty $h!t like T-Spoon must have more points (wait, why am I surprised a novelty song would have more points than a good R&B tune on this site?)

It's usually nostalgia talking for me with anything to do with 1998/1999  I LOVE string laden ballads, it doesn't matter who they're by - if they're from 1998 I love them even more, this song may sound like nothing special but oddly I associate a lot of memories with it! I know it's being dismissed as throwaway but compared to You Needed Me and Isn't It A Wonder, I always thought it was relatively memorable :o

Hits 99 was the first compilation I bought :D Again, because of this I seem to have a very close affinity with almost everything on there (perhaps explaining the love for Until The Time Is Through?) as it was one of only two albums I owned at that point, the other naturally being Talk On Corners by The Corrs, so I used to hammer it. It certainly helped that it had the two songs I loved the most from 1998 opening their respective discs - Cher's Believe and The Corrs' So Young

Glad I'm not the only one that noticed the point that I've bolded. Ok, I like a lot of these 'club bangers' around at the moment, but dear GOD, what the hell happened to the variety in the UK charts, we've almost completed the transformation from great original chart with something for everyone to clone of the Billboard Hot 100 featuring 3 genres max.

15. Beautiful South “Perfect 10” - I love this

12. Madonna “Ray of Light”

10. Fat Les “Vindaloo”

8. George Michael “Outside”

6. Jay-Z “Hard Knock Life”

5. Pras Michel “Ghetto Superstar”

4. Will Smith “Just The Two of Us”

3. Mousse T “Horny”

2. Brandy and Monica “The Boy is Mine”

1. Natalie Imbruglia “Big Mistake”

-2. Spice Girls “Stop” - This could easily have gone to about 5 others.

Considering this year was the first I properly started taking note of music after I got Now 38 for Xmas in 1997 this list is absolutely shocking in comparison to the previous year. Only the top 10 I really think are great, and then 'Vindaloo' for comedy value.

I've noticed our votes in these have generally been fairly similar, I'm gobsmacked you like this enough for a 15, it's terrible! :puke:

I can't remember Top of the World at all and I used to listen to the charts week in week out back then... I can however remember the T-Spoon track which is why I gave it my -2! :D

I absolutely loved it at the time, it really deserved to get to #1! I think it resonated more with people who were clubbing at the time, I have never heard a track be played so often as Music Sounds Better With You - it was literally everywhere, you'd easily hear it 4 or 5 times a night (and sometimes even if you stayed in the same place!) - I guess it's been cheapened by the liked of Modjo and Phats & Small but I still love it.

(Actually, I love Ray Of Light and Perfect 10 as much too but Stardust didn't seem to be getting as many points as they did)

Now 39 was one of the best ever.

I'm inclined to agree there. The first disc was certainly near enough perfect bar about 2 songs and the second disc only goes off a bit in the middle and the very end.

To be fair, it only did so well because of her fame off the back of The Boy is Mine and a relatively dead week in the charts. Even the far more anonymous (here, anyway) Monica managed to grab a solo top 10 hit off the back off that track (the incredible First Night )

I don't madly love TOTW but I'd be most annoyed if it came right at the bottom. Would be very undeserved :(

I don't really like either of those two either, especially 'Lady'!

Even after listening to that video I can't remember the Brandy & Mase song either, the E-17 songs is the only other that doesn't immediately come to my mind.

I absolutely DETEST Lady... I meant to put 'likes', not 'liked'...

I also must add to the general consensus that this was a relatively rubbish year for #2s, only my top 4 would have stood any chance of points among the amazing songs featured in the 1997 one.

I can't bring myself to vote. I only like 2 of those songs - The Boy is Mine and Ray of Light.
Even I barely recall that Brandy/Mase song, definitely the least memorable in the list for me. I've never been keen on the Stardust track either, it's that pounding 'in and out' bassline that puts me off, for the very same reason I've never liked Call On Me by Eric Prydz :(

I assume E-17 and East 17 are different things?

E-17 were East 17 with fewer members!

I assume E-17 and East 17 are different things?

Nope, they're the same. Although the former was less Tony or Brian, I can't actually remember which but it was the one who took drugs and brought shame upon their baggy clothed but tight morals image.
