I would have loved the TOTP repeats to start with 1980 onwards-now THAT was the true era of pop music!!!!

If the current reruns are successful they will get to 1980 in four years' time.

I would have preferred to have seen the BBC feature a different year each week, perhaps from 1976 to 1985, which would have meant a TOTP from a particular year every two and a half months.

Starting from 1980 would have been problematic though - the programme was off air for 9 weeks in June and July 1980 due to a strike by the Musicians Union...

The last song played on TOTP for those 9 weeks was "Funky Town" by Lipps Inc, on 29/05/80, which was played over the credits at the end of the programme. The next one to feature was "Tom Hark" by The Piranhas which opened the programme on 07/08/80...

TOTP was bigger than X-Factor is now. General ratings in the 1980s were over 20 million.

There were only two or three other channels available then.

Maybe one day soon VEVO will create a Music Chart Show.

vevo.com is now available in the UK, US and Canada. I could see a VEVO Music Countdown for each country.

It's not that expensive to put together a music countdown show. Show MVs and recorded performances.

What new songs have you discovered? I was a teenager at the time these shows were first shown so it's all nostalgia for me. I'm just interested to know what unfamiliar songs are making an impact with viewers too young to have seen the programmes at the time.

Sorry for the late reply. "Music" by John Miles is one and "Girls Girls Girls" by Sailor, I really like them both and I'd not heard of them before watching the re-runs! I'll have a think if there's more.

I loved "Music" at the time and thought it still sounded good on TOTP although it was an edited version. The real version was about six minutes long. Sailor were fun. They also had a big hit with Glass Of Champagne.
