youre last post has just destroyed my view of music history, so the beatles never really sold enough to have 17 uk no1s!!!!!!!!!!

I assume you mean my post?

If so then the truth is we will never know but before bar coding etc you have a healthy amount of suspicion (and we certainly will never know FOR SURE to the contrary......

I'll find the link for you if u like!

The interesting bit is the second half of this guy's blog- it's old now 2007 i think but it's an eye opener as to what they got up to in the 70's and before......

Anyway for the record i'm defo in favour of climbers- the great thing about the 80s is that climbed so you got a bout 6 weeks or so of promotion whilst in climbed then it pretty much fell consistantly so songs never really oustayed their welcome IMO

I just quickly scanned through that article, interesting reading, particularly towards the end.

i wonder why this occured in 1973?i would have thought that after 1963 any new beatles track would have been a sure fire new entry at no1 because of their popularity?wonder how songs rose back then...where they available to buy in record stores before they had been given air play and so rose as the weeks went by?

Get Back was the only Beatles single to enter at number one.

The Jam set out to enter at number one by releasing the single on a Monday which meant they got a full week of sales. At the time shops didn't open on Sundays and - for whatever reason - singles were released in midweek. I think Thursday was the general release day.

Climbers. I prefer to watch the journey of the song and see how high it gets, as opposed to it débuting at #1, as it has nowhere to go but down from there.

You pretty much said everything I would say, agree.

Definitly climbers as its more exciting, on saying that if artists or songs i like debut at number 1 i wouldnt say id be gutted!

Climbers for me, it makes the chartz more interesting instead of everything entering at the top and falling. I'm loving LMFAO's chart run atm, it wouldn't have been as great if it was held back. But saying that if a massive song was held back I would like it to enter at number one (unless it's rubbish :kink:).

I think 2011 has/will be been better for 'deserved' number ones, the only non-number one we've had so far is Ke$ha, and by this time last year we would have had HH (that was a charity release to be fair) but waiting for next week's number one would be 'Once' which starts the non-number ones. I think this year will have less of those non-number ones (JLS and XF Finalists are guaranteed a number one but that's about it), Cheryl Cole won't get number one if she doesn't appear on TXF (which I think is true)

I voted Climbers, as that was the pattern when I first started following the charts in the early 80's. An instant #1 back then was a rare & special event, but now it has been totally devalued.

However, as long as it is a song I like, I don't mind whether they climb to a peak, or reach there instantly.

I think it's probably due to the fact that back then releases didn't tend to coincide with the start of a new chart week, so you'd get a 'part week' for the new entry position, then rising to no.1 for the first full week of sales. Of course prior to 1969 there were several competing charts, they may well have had different 'chart weeks' anyway.

I preffer climbers, but I don't mind debuts. Climbers have longer chart runs, and I seem to find debuts sometimes drop quicker in the chart. However, debuts have higher sales, unless its at Christmas/New Year when sales are always high

Personally, I couldn't care less if a track debuts at #1 or indeed climbs to #1. I think most people know my thoughts on the #1 spot - that's to see tracks get to no. 1 and stay there to show they are worthy chart toppers (I'm not saying spent 10 weeks or more at no. 1, but at least 3 maybe 4 weeks at a time).

At one point in 2010, I think we had a chain of 8 (?) different #1 singles - all made worse by the fact 'Love The Way You Lie' spent four of those weeks stalling at #2 yet rightfully announced as the #1 biggest selling single of the year.

I prefer climbers. Because personally, not everyone is gonna like a song that much for it to be number 1 instantly. It's interesting seeing a song become more and more popular each week. That's why i love the American chart more than the UK chart at times.

9 - so there were 11 #1s in 11 weeks. :drama:

Wow, I actually like all those songs (apart from All Time Low, Beautiful Monster and Please Don't Let Me Go).

Kind of good that Alexandra Burke finally managed to release a song with some longevity to have a 2-weeker though. :)

SWY didn't have good longevity, there was just f*** all else out the next week. All the other songs except The Club Is Alive and maybe Green Light had better longevity.

Although this 'On Air/On Sale' method is driving me insane, the idea that the release of songs are built up for a couple of months means that good songs will climb the chart in their own time.

Songs like Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Pitbull and Jessie J wouldn't have stood a chance had the single release been built up, but this way they're all climbing the charts at exciting paces and it just makes the whole top 40 reveal on Sunday a more exciting thing to listen to.

On the topic of Bruno Mars, I'm gobsmacked that it's climbed all the way to #2 on iTunes - either the weather has encouraged people to buy the cheery number or it's spreading like wild fire. Am hoping Jessie J and Pitbull can follow similar success.
