I think Duffy would've been more successful if there hadn't been such a long gap between the eras. I know other artists have spent years out and come back as big as ever, but I don't think everybody can manage that.

I have no idea why Adele was successful and why Duffy wasn't, I thought them 2 came together at around the same period of time.
Other artists who will flop with their second album: Alexis Jordan, Olly Murs, Eliza Doolittle, Diana Vickers, B.O.B., Aggro Santos, Nadine Coyle (if there is one!) and Paloma Faith.

I have to disagree with some of these. I think people like Diana, Pixie and Olly could flop with their second albums because everyone knows who they are and they have already given their best, I can't see a different direction for these three in particular.

However with the right marketing, there is no reason why Alexis, Eliza and Paloma will flop. None are really that well known and have been building up momentum and fanbases with their first album and there is still plenty of space for them in the public eye. I'd argue that Paloma has the most defining image but she's hardly somebody everybody knows, unlike Pixie or Olly...

It will be interesting to see now but I think I'll probably be wrong, but the logic is there!

I think Alexis could do even better. They have marketed her in an awful way. Vocally, she is really good. Yet, they bunged her into the dance genre which more and more artists are going into. They could easily market her into the urban genre and she could do well. That's why she has flopped in the states.

Adele's Material >>>>> x100 Duffy's Material

Adele's Voice >>>>> x 100 Duffy's Voice

Also Adele PROGRESSED with her second album, Duffy failed too.

That's why.

Duffy's endlessly album wasn't very commericial at all. Plus there was no hype at all. You would think following the huge success of Rockferry, that there would be.
Duffy was a fad artist. See also Mika (although he at least managed a top 5 hit from his second album and a couple of other singles which charted - incidentally both peaked at #72). The public grew tired of the kind of music Duffy was making, whereas they were still very much interested in Adele (far more so than they were the first time around). I always though it was injustice that Duffy did so much better than Adele when they were both considered the 'new artist of 2008'. So it's fantastic to see the tables turning (no Adele pun intended) in such a way now with 21 vastly outperforming not only 19 but also Rockferry (and Endlessly of course ) :D Not to mention of course that 19 will probably end up doubling its total sales just from the promotion of her new album!
I think it's also very likely that The X Factor helped to bring Adele's hype back..

That helped too. :kink:

But I doubt W,W,W and Endlessly would have done a whole lot better if they were released at the same time as RITD/21 and XF had been hammering, say, Rain On Your Parade.

usually artists work very hard on their debut albums since it's their way of cracking the music industry...

and usually if the debut album succeeds, the artists just rush out to record the second resulting in a lesser quality album being rush-released just to keep the interest going...

Endlessly was one of the best albums released last year, yet it was ignored.

It just failed because it had a bad lead single 'Well well well' being the worst song on the album (she should've released 'Keeping my baby') and it wasn't well promoted...

Kate Nash's second album was nowhere near as successful as her debut one. My Best Friend Is You only reached #8 in the charts, compared to Made of Bricks which topped the charts. But I feel she did a lot better on MBFIY. I can listen to it more I think.

And the same with Lucie Silvas. I love both her albums equally (can't really pick a favourite), but while Breathe In peaked at #11 and remained in the charts for a while, The Same Side peaked at #62 and only spent one week in the charts. Shame really.

That is usually a reason but in Duffy's case, there was a almost a three year gap between Rockferry and Endlessly. There was more than enough time to evolve her sound and herself as an artist.

I think one of the hardest to guage whether she will flop or not is Ellie Goulding. Her Album has just passed 600,000 which means this era for her hasnt been MASSIVE, but nearly 18 months on she's still in the top 40 selling well. If she gets her album out september/ October time then I think it could do quite well, perhaps as no doubt your song will be murdered on x factor which will raise the hype for her again, and if she goes for a more acoustic album (even as acoustic as the demo of wish i stayed) then it could do extremely well.

However, if she leaves it till 2012 and does another folktronica album then she will just flop big time which would be a massive shame as she is really fantastic.

Oh, and you can say that 'Lights' the single flopped hard only peaking at #49 but that was only off a C list playlist and one peice of promo so i think its a shame really.

I totally agree about Lucie.

I think someone else who needs a mention in this context is KT Tunstall.

I haven't heard her album described as 'folktronica' before (I don't even know what that's supposed to mean  ), but assuming that's how you describe her first album, I wouldn't complain if her 2nd album sounded very similar. :)

My fear is that she'll follow many others down the road of urban collaboration (she's already done one, of course). If so, I'm very unlikely to buy her next album - at best I may cherry-pick her solo tracks from it.

There's also the fact she's very cute, too.

Folk + electronica = folktronica.

Folk + electronica = folktronica.

Or electrolk? :)
