Why France? It's god awful pretentious $h!t. And it reminds me of a Scandipop-less La Voix. We all know how well that did.

I still do not think the UK is a winner, Lee will overscreech and kill our chances stone cold dead.

It's not really pretentious. La Voix failed because it went on fourth and had a fairly forgettable performance. The rehearsals so far have shown it works massively well in the hall with its backdrop and is vocally completely flawless - it's going to be a real moment.

Difference being that 14th has seen strong results more years than not. Put Eric on 2nd or 3rd (or, even worse, 8th and two before Russia) and he'd be completely screwed.

Plus, this is Eric Saade we're talking about. Someone who, looks aside, is very much talent-wise the weak link in the whole thing  I reckon he could pull off a Shady Lady from 20th or 23rd but anything in the first half (5 slots in the first half, five in the second) would end him. He needs to be as far away from Russia as possible, and the later the better.

See I still don't get this whole draw thing. I understand the 2nd slot, death slot thing. But that's about it

I know that Last is advantageous, but surely 1st is too as you set the standard for the rest of the competition?

Becuase whether you like it or not, it stands out hugely - and will even moreso coming after a RedOne by numbers pop song. La Voix was a different situation, the backing vocals removed the impact that it had in Melodifestivalen, and although I prefer it to Sognu, it definitely had far less of a 'wow' factor about it, probably because it was interspersed with pop/dance in the verses, and her manly voice might have put people off it. Its draw didn't do it any favours either - to drop from 4th in the semi to 21st in the final was horrendous.

UK I'm less sure about but I still think it's got top five written all over it at least - the chorus is anthemic, it's the most contemporary/likely to be a European hit song in the contest and they've still got a pretty large fanbase across Europe, who'll be more than used to Lee's style of singing. Hopefully he'll either reign it in or do whatever it was he did when they performed on Paul O'Grady, as that was a great performance.

See, more draw stuff I don't understand. It's not as pretentious as the Finnish entry [That kid needs to be run down by a Hummer or similar] but it's along the scale.

It's fairly arbitrary for a few positions, but a basic rule of thumb is that the later you are, the better. If you've got an uptempo or a big anthem, first isn't too bad, but something like Finland will be damaged hugely by going on first as it'll be forgotten more easily - so Azerbaijan last year were remembered a fair bit but still damaged by going on first. Going in the last five is a massive gift, but the track still has to be up to it. Great draws are ones which contrast you well - so, last year, Ireland and Belarus were destroyed by going on next to each other. In 2007, Serbia and Ukraine complemented each other perfectly by going on one after the other - it was a clean split which ensured both were remembered very well. Scooch then went straight on after Verka and were destroyed by doing camp all over again but in the most budget way possible.

It is arbitrary to an extent though. I'm not quite sure why 7th and 14th have tended to be fairly good positions - possibly down to sheer chance, possibly down to ad breaks, possibly down to bits where people start paying attention again after wavering a bit.

On first though - first is great for stuff like Melodifestivalen where you have just ten tracks and it's fairly easy to remember everything. After 25 tracks though, first feels like it was days ago

That Money Note  She was just so brilliant live, it's why I have so much confidence in Nótt/Slow Down.

She was, but lightning doesn't strike twice, and Slow Down being a significantly weaker song would have been reflected in the results I think. Although, that said, after ballads all failed to make any impact whatsoever last year, they do seem to be back in vogue this year - France, Lithuania - and I'll be shocked/disgusted if Austria and Slovenia fail to go further. BUT in 2009, Yohanna had the standout ballad, and Slow Down would only have been about the 4th best ballad out of that list and would have suffered as a result.

I agree. I don't find it pretentious, in fact he looks quite down to earth in himself. I think I read somebody say that when not on stage he looks as if he's walked off the set of Wayne's World, and I can't disgaree with that  He'll pick up as many vain votes as Eric Saade gets on that front. It's looked incredible in the rehearsals and you just know he'll put everything into the final performance, being such a favourite he's got massive pressure to perform.

SO GLAD Norway didn't qualify. Overrated to the maxxxx.

Gutted for my Turkey boys though. And the massive WTF of the year goes to ICELAND.

I thought you'd like it! It sort of reminds me of something that might have been on Take That's The Circus album!

Surely the true WTF moment is Lithuania raiding the Walt Disney circa 1960s songbook, presenting it with half-assed sign language and progressing to the final! Mind you, they qualified in 2009 in a similar fashion and managed to finish last or 2nd last in the final, and I expect the same will happen again.

! To be honest, I definitley expect Lithuania to flop, especially with that performing position. Semi Final 2 is so much stronger as well, so some of these songs obviously got through because they had to.

Funny how Norway seems to be doing the best on I-Tunes around Europe atm

No real shocker there, it's definitely the most chart friendly song - Jessy Matador did very well last year across Europe despite failing to reach the top ten in the final. I have no doubt that juries removed its qualification chances, likewise France were 8th last year based on the televoting alone.

Clearly Lithuania's use of sign language was a precaution against the possible loss of sound during their performance (and others). Thus while other countries would flop horribly as a result of no sound, Lithuania would coast through to the final on the votes of the deaf alone.

Genius.

Anybody know what it is she was signing exactly? The song lyrics I assume?

Probably.

Hopefully it was something more interesting along the lines of "Sis, did you remember to lock the door on your way out tonight", "I'm going to need a stiff one after this" or "Hi Mom!"

I'm gonna make a bold prediction - Georgia for a Top 5 finish.

It has power, it has a catchy chorus, it is by far the strongest rock entry. Not to mention that female-fronted rock/metal bands tend to be very popular on the rest of the continent, but for some reason they never do well in the UK.

I'd been saying it would qualify all along and people poo-pood that idea, so what do y'all know anyway ;)

'One More Day' is my least favourite song of the WHOLE contest :(

Georgia has a very strong song, out of all the performances last night Georgia easily gave it the most welly.

It didn't have much competition on the rock front though did it? The only other song standing in it's way really was Turkey, and well it was a bit of a Turkey. Georgia didn't have a reason to be worried.

I'd question the sanity of anybody who didn't have Portugals song as their least favourite of the contest.

He SWORE here.

Georgia. My favourite. OMG. LOVE the lead vocalist.

Yes.

'No more ranty rant'?! Is it what Evelina sings?! Also, "c'est ma vieRRRRRRR". I mean WTF?

I'd question the sanity of anybody who didn't have Portugals song as their least favourite of the contest.

In my Top 5 performances-wise, bitch.
